For real-time tracking and pollution control, STPs to go online in Greater Noida

Time of India6 days ago
Noida: Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has begun integrating all sewage treatment plants (STPs) with an online monitoring system. Part of the broader Namami Gange Project, it aims to equip STPs across the state with real-time monitoring for efficiency and pollution control.
These facilities recycle wastewater for irrigation in nearby green zones. The estimated cost of installing the online monitoring mechanism at each STP is approximately Rs 30 lakh. Apart from GNIDA officials, the system will also be monitored by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and authorities associated with the Namami Gange Project.
The city currently has four operational STPs with a total treatment capacity of 172 million litres per day (MLD), but 109 MLD of sewage is treated daily.
The sewer department has begun installing monitoring systems at the STP in Badalpur. Additional CEO Prerna Singh, GNIDA, said the system will now be expanded to other plants, including those in Ecotech Sectors 2 and 3."The installation at these two facilities is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.
The largest of the four existing STPs, the 137 MLD plant in Kasna, is slated to get the system within a month," she said.

The estimated cost of installing the online monitoring mechanism at each STP is approximately Rs 30 lakh.
Senior manager Vinod Sharma said that once the system is in place, it can be simultaneously connected to six devices, and it will enable officials to monitor STP operations remotely from their offices.
"The system allows tracking of critical water quality indicators such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels before and after sewage treatment," he said.

State orders mandatory structural audits for all urban bridges, buildings

Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt has directed all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state—including municipal corporations, councils, and panchayats—to carry out structural audits of every bridge and building under their jurisdiction. The directive, issued through a Government Resolution (GR) dated June 30, applies across the state and aims to prevent accidents due to deteriorating civic infrastructure. The move comes in the wake of mounting concerns over aging infrastructure, most recently triggered by the tragic collapse of the Kundmala bridge in Pune, which claimed several lives. Closer to home, Nagpur has seen its own warnings ignored—Cracks were discovered in 11 strut pockets of Butibori bridge in December last year, and in 2023, a block of Panchasheel bridge partially collapsed, raising serious safety concerns that still linger. The resolution, released by Urban Development Department, holds ULBs accountable for the upkeep, safety, and timely repairs of structures built with either state funds or their own resources. It emphasises the need for urgent action in areas with high footfall, such as tourist and religious sites, where the risk from neglected structures is considerably higher. The GR makes it compulsory for ULBs to conduct structural audits at regular intervals and take proactive measures, especially where structures show signs of decay or pose safety risks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Høreproblemer? In the city, where civic infrastructure is under increasing stress due to urban expansion, the directive is expected to push the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) into action. Several bridges and old govt buildings in the city have long been due for assessment. The GR also specifies that if any bridge or building is found to be in a hazardous state, the concerned ULB must act without delay to prevent any loss of life or property. Necessary funding for the audits and follow-up repairs must come from the local bodies' own budgets. Zeenat released into the wild in April, has found a partner: Wildlife dept

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Tigress Zeenat is free and loving it. Zeenat, who was translocated from Maharashtra and was forced to stay in an enclosure for nearly four months following its dispersal in Nov, had been released into the wild in April and is showing tale-tell signs of having mated with male tiger T12, wildlife authorities said. The development has come as a huge boost to Similipal Tiger Reserve given that Zeenat was brought from Tadoba-Andheri Tiger Reserve with an objective to infuse new genetic variation in tiger population for future sustenance. Similipal is known for its melanistic tigers. Zeenat, who is around 3.5 years old, had been released into the wild from the large enclosure in third week of April. Wildlife wing, however, kept the information secret to save it from poachers. "It mated with T12 several times in May. Tiger gestational period is 105 days. Going by this, it should deliver in August," a senior wildlife officer said. After it was brought from Maharashtra, Zeenat was released at Similipal's Chahala, a core area in the reserve's northern part, on Nov 14. Three days later it dispersed, crossing Bangiriposhi Ghat in an overnight journey en route to Badampahar-Dhobadhobin elephant corridor, eventually reaching Chaibasa in Jharkhand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Bother With An Expensive Will (Do This Instead) Local Will Finder Undo From there, it arrived at Rajabasa, under the Chakulia range, and then moved into West Bengal. It was captured in a joint operation by the forest departments of West Bengal and Odisha. "We have kept a watchful eye on the movement of the tigress through direct monitoring, camera traps and other methods. We are hopeful that Similipal will change its history and repopulate itself with a new big cat gene," a top wildlife officer said. Noida to take gardening lessons from Delhi

Noida: In a move to improve the management of parks and vast green belts in the city, and save them from further deterioration, the Authority's horticulture department has sought help from New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Under this partnership, NDMC will conduct specialised workshops to train Noida Authority staff in better maintenance practices. Vandana Tripathi, additional CEO of the Authority, said despite the hard work, the city has not been able to achieve the same level of upkeep as compared to Delhi's parks around places like Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate, hence the move to reach out to NDMC, which is otherwise known for its expertise in maintaining iconic parks in the national capital. Our staff works hard, but the results are not the same. During a brainstorming session, we realised that our gardeners lack proper training. That's when we decided to consult NDMC," she said. Workers will get training sessions on topics such as plantation, plant trimming techniques, appropriate use of fertilisers, seasonal plantation planning, nursery management, and eco-friendly practices like composting and use of biofertilizers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Noida currently maintains 729 parks spread across 1,401 acres and 195 green belts over 1,071 acres, underscoring the need for professional intervention to manage such a vast green expanse. The NDMC manages 1,250 acres of green spaces in central Delhi, maintaining iconic gardens like Lodhi Garden, Nehru Park, Talkatora Garden, Central Park (Connaught Place), and Children's Park (India Gate). Known for sustainable horticulture, it plants species-specific avenues—Arjun trees on Janpath and Park Street, Neem on Aurangzeb Road and Aurobindo Marg, Jamun on Ashoka and Raisina Roads, and Semal on Niti and Nyaya Marg. It also runs a school of gardening at its Purana Qila Road nursery, offering training in vertical gardening, urban landscaping, and composting. The Authority believes that adopting NDMC's horticulture model will uplift the quality and visual appeal of its urban green infrastructure. An NDMC official confirmed ongoing discussions with Authority officials, adding that a team will visit Noida in the coming weeks.
