Bhubaneswar: With Rath Yatra just one day away, Odisha police on Wednesday carried out a rehearsal in Puri to train personnel in chariot pulling procedures. Adequate security arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of Nabajouban Darshan ceremony on Thursday.
The practice session involved three jeeps serving as substitute chariots, which police personnel pulled. Officers received detailed instructions about their specific duties for ensuring a smooth chariot pulling ceremony.
From the total 205 police platoons assigned for the Rath Yatra, 72 platoons will specifically oversee chariot pulling. "Our priorities include maintaining clear pathways for chariots and establishing security cordons to regulate devotee movement near the chariots," said SP (Puri) Vinit Agrawal.
Officers received strict instructions to maintain vigilance to prevent accidents. On a few previous celebrations, police officers, servitors and devotees who fell while pulling the chariots have been injured. "Foolproof crowd control and stampede prevention measures have been taken to ensure that the chariots are pulled without any untoward incidents," said Agrawal.
After remaining out of bounds for devotees for a fortnight, sibling gods Jagannath, Balabhadra and goddess Subhadra are all set to grant darshan to countless devotees on the occasion of Nabajouban Darshan on Thursday.

Nabajouban Darshan is an essential ceremony preceding Rath Yatra.
The Nabajouban Darshan holds particular importance as the deities have recovered from their symbolic ailment after their ceremonial bath during Debasnan Purnima on June 11. Following tradition, the deities will present themselves to visitors in their renewed form inside the sanctum sanctorum on Thursday and on chariots on Friday.
Temple authorities said herbal paint was applied on the faces of the deities. "Similar to humans preparing for significant occasions, the deities receive special preparation before Rath Yatra. The makeup is essential as the sibling deities' faces became pale during their 15-day treatment," explained Sanjay Kumar Duttamohapatra, a servitor.
Anticipating large crowds, police have put in place necessary arrangements. "We will organise devotees in queues for temple entry. Our officers will provide all required support to visitors," said the SP.

Israeli settlers rampage at military base in West Bank

Image credit (AP) TEL AVIV: Dozens of Israeli settlers rampaged around a military base in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, setting fires, vandalising military vehicles, spraying graffiti and attacking soldiers, the military said. Sunday night's unrest came after several attacks in the West Bank carried out by Jewish settlers and anger at their arrests by security forces attempting to contain the violence over the past few days. More than 100 settlers on Wednesday evening entered the West Bank town of Kfar Malik, setting property ablaze and opening fire on Palestinians who tried to stop them, Najeb Rostom, head of the local council, said. Three Palestinians were killed after the military intervened. Israeli security forces arrested five settlers. "No civilised country can tolerate violent and anarchic acts of burning a military facility, damaging IDF property and attacking security personnel by citizens of the country," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Footage on Israeli media showed dozens of young, religious men typically associated with "hilltop youth", an extremist movement of Israeli settlers who occupy West Bank hilltops and have been accused of attacking Palestinians and their property. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria: Slash Your Power Bills With a Battery Australian Solar Batteries Get Quote Undo The footage showed security forces using stun grenades as dozens of settlers gathered around the military base just north of Ramallah. The Israeli military released photos of the infrastructure burned in the attack, which it said included "systems that help thwart terrorist attacks and maintain security". Far-right Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has often defended Israelis accused of similar crimes, offered a rare condemnation of Sunday's violence. "Attacking security forces, security facilities, and IDF soldiers who are our brothers, our protectors, is a red line, and must be dealt with in full severity. We are brothers," he wrote on X. Opposition leader Yair Lapid told Israel's Army radio that the riots were carried out by "Jewish terrorists, gangs of criminals, who feel backed by the (governing) coalition". A hard-line supporter of Jewish settlements, Ben-Gvir was previously convicted in Israel of racist incitement and support for terrorist groups, and has called for the deportation of all Arab citizens from Israel. Though once widely shunned by Israel's politicians, Ben-Gvir's influence has grown and alongside a shift to the right in the country's electorate has further emboldened violence from extremist settlers in the West Bank. Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed Monday to "eradicate this violence from the root", and implored the extremist settlers to remember that many of the security forces are exhausted reservists serving multiple rounds of duty. Over the past two years of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Palestinian residents in the West Bank have reported a major increase in Israeli checkpoints and delays across the territory. Israel, meanwhile, says threats from the West Bank against its citizens are on the rise. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war, and Palestinians want all three territories for their future state. The West Bank is home to some 3 million Palestinians live under seemingly open-ended Israeli military rule, and 500,000 Jewish settlers. The international community overwhelmingly considers settlements illegal.

Dark twist in love story: Kerala youth walks into police station with bones of newborns; unwed couple charged with murder

THRISSUR: Police on Sunday arrested a youth and a woman after the recovery of bones suspected to be of two newborns born to them. One of these newborns is believed to have been murdered. The crime came to light after the youth, Bavin, 25, of Nenmanikkara panchayat, walked into Pudukkad police station around 12:30 am carrying bones in a bag. Bavin told police that the bones were those of his children born to 23-year-old Aneesha of Mattathoor panchayat. The couple had exhumed the bones months after the bodies were buried to perform rituals, and Bavin kept them at his house. He went to police after a rift surfaced in his relationship with Aneesha. They were charged under various IPC and BNS sections for murder, concealing evidence, concealment of birth and abandoning a child, besides under the Juvenile Justice Act for wilfully neglecting the child. 'Girl says family was not aware of pregnancy' Police said Aneesha and Bavin came into contact on Facebook years ago, and he used to go to Chalakudy to meet her. On Nov 6, 2021, Aneesha gave birth to a boy in her bathroom. Eight months later, on Bavin's directives, she exhumed the bones and took them to his house, allegedly to perform rituals,' an officer said. According to police, she became pregnant again in 2024 and gave birth to a boy in her house on Aug 29. Fearing social stigma, she killed him the same day by covering his face with her hands and took the body in a bag to Bavin's house on a scooter the next day. Bavin buried the body in the compound of his house, where he lives with his mother, an ayurveda nurse, police said. 'Bavin exhumed the bones around four months later to perform rituals. He hid them in an almirah in his house. Later, a rift surfaced among the couple as Bavin suspected Aneesha of another relationship. He reached the police station on Sunday in an inebriated state,' the officer said. Police have registered two FIRs against the couple. They will exhume the bodies on Monday, besides questioning their family members to ascertain if the couple got support from others to kill the newborns and cover up the crime.

Odisha: Devotees throng Puri on fourth day of annual Rath Yatra

Puri (Odisha) [India], June 30 (ANI): On the fourth day of Rath Yatra, devotees gathered in large numbers to witness and be part of the grand event. The Rath Yatra began on June 27 from Jagannath Temple here. July 5 will mark the conclusion of the event, known as 'Bahuda Yatra'. A devotee named Anita, who got the opportunity to pull the chariot, shared her excitement and said, 'We have been feeling lucky for the last two days because when we first came here, the Lord gave us darshan on the chariot. There was a huge crowd, but even amidst that, it seemed like he was protecting us.' 'After the stampede yesterday morning, our family members were worried. However, we don't feel any chaos here. Everything is good here and everyone is kind. We are very blessed to see such beautiful scenes,' she further added. Another devotee, Deepak Rawat, who was attending the Rath Yatra for the first time, said, 'I have come here for the first time and Lord Jagannath has given me a wonderful opportunity to pull the chariot. Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured in Sunday's stampede at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri. Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan called the stampede 'very unfortunate' and said that appropriate action will be taken after the completion of investigation. 'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident. We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters. He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, he gives darshan to his devotees. Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers. I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.' Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of 25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future. Following the incident, the state government has ordered a high-level administrative inquiry to be supervised by the Development Commissioner. Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra has been appointed in place of the previous SP, and Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain has been replaced by Chanchal Rana.
