Tottenham fans will only appreciate me when I am gone, says Daniel Levy

The Guardian3 hours ago
The Tottenham chair, Daniel Levy, believes he will get credit for his time in charge only when he leaves and is confident Thomas Frank can help the club to 'compete at the highest level'.
In a rare interview, Levy described the construction of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as his 'greatest achievement' and hit back at fans who have blamed him for the club's failure to win more trophies.
'I think it's one of those situations [in which] when I'm not here I'm sure I'll get the credit,' Levy told Gary Neville on his Overlap podcast. 'This stadium is a symbol of Tottenham Hotspur on the global map. I think it's fantastic for the local community – the employment that we're creating because of this stadium.
'The fact that other clubs are now trying to copy what we're doing, that should be a sign that maybe we did do something bold, and something right.'
The Europa League triumph last season was Tottenham's first trophy since 2008 and came just before the end of a Premier League campaign in which they finished 17th after a record 22 defeats. Levy sacked Ange Postecoglou 16 days after the victory against Manchester United in the final in Bilbao and he is hopeful that Frank can help the club to challenge for trophies on a more consistent basis.
'Whenever you appoint a coach, you always believe it's right,' Levy said. 'You need a lot of ingredients for it to be right. Thomas is a highly intelligent individual, a fantastic way about him in terms of communication. I think he will be great at both developing young players and older players and making them better. He gets the style of football we want to play. He understands that Rome wasn't built in a day. We haven't said to him: 'You've got to win the league this year.' We just want to compete at the highest level.'
Levy was critical of the Premier League for the time it has taken to conclude the case involving alleged breaches of the league's regulations by Manchester City. The club, who deny wrongdoing, were charged with more than 130 breaches in February 2023.
'I think it would be really unfair of me to talk about another club in the Premier League,' Levy said. 'All I would say is that it's going through a process which I think has gone on for far too long. It needs to be brought, for the good of the game, to a conclusion one way or another.'

Reform's 19-year-old council leader risks contempt of court over rape case comments

A Reform UK council leader risks being found in contempt of court after making a number of statements about the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl during a press conference in London. It comes after Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, was charged with the rape of a girl in Nuneaton last week. Meanwhile, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, was charged with kidnap and strangulation. Warwickshire Police has not released the immigration status of the two suspects. George Finch - the 19-year-old Warwickshire county council leader - risks having broken the law with a comment he made about the case. Contempt of court refers to behaviour that interferes with the administration of justice or undermines the authority of the court. The Independent is not able to repeat a number of claims Mr Finch makes in the press conference without the newspaper risking contempt of court. At one point during the press conference, Mr Finch acknowledged the risks attached to talking about a live legal case, saying: 'I was told if I released this, I'd be in contempt of court.' The youngest council leader in the country claimed there has been a 'cover-up' of details about the case. It came as Nigel Farage suggested police forces should release information including immigration status about people who are charged with crimes. The Reform UK leader said that he 'absolutely' believes that information should be made available by police forces. In a statement, Warwickshire Police said that once someone is charged with an offence, they follow national guidance, which 'does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status'. Mr Finch told Monday's press conference that he was 'begging' for information about the two to be released in the wake of the charges. He said he had emailed the council's chief executive to say that he wished to speak to the police force and urge them to release information about the men's immigration status. Mr Finch also said he had later written a letter to home secretary Yvette Cooper and the chief constable of Warwickshire Police calling for the immediate release of the immigration status of the two. Mr Finch also claimed that Reform UK needs to 'change things' and is 'the last line of defence against the blob, the cover-ups'.

David Tennant discusses ‘very intense' role in new ITV real-life drama

ITV 's forthcoming seven-part drama, The Hack, will explore the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of the News of the World. David Tennant stars as investigative journalist Nick Davies, who uncovered the unethical practices of the newspaper. The series will cover events between 2002 and 2012, detailing how journalists illegally accessed voicemails of celebrities, murder victims, and the Royal Family. Written by Jack Thorne, the drama also features Robert Carlyle as former Met Police detective Dave Cook and Toby Jones as former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger; the series is set to air on ITV and STV later this year. Tennant said that shooting the series had been 'very intense' due to the complex nature of the phone hacking scandal, but was proud to be part of the new drama.

Serie A and Saudi Pro League clubs circling for Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez is attracting interest from AC Milan and Al Hilal as Liverpool could sell the striker this summer. Neither club has yet bid for the £85m forward but Liverpool would be willing to let him go for the right price after signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m. Liverpool also made a £110m bid for Alexander Isak, which Newcastle were swift to reject, and the Premier League champions do not currently intend to submit an improved offer. Nunez started Liverpool's friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, scoring after five minutes to continue his fine form in pre-season. The Uruguay international, who was Liverpool's club record buy when they bought him from Benfica in 2022, only scored seven goals in 47 games last season as he was usually a substitute for Arne Slot. Napoli made a bid for him earlier in the summer before opting to sign Lorenzo Lucca instead, but Nunez has other admirers in Serie A. Milan have sold Tijjani Reijnders and Theo Hernandez this summer, raising funds which could be spent on the Uruguayan striker. Midfielder Tyler Morton is closing in on a £15m move to Lyon. His departure would mean Liverpool have raised almost £150m in the transfer market this summer. In addition, at least two Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in winger Ben Doak, who is expected to leave Anfield this summer.
