Rain saves Pears against Warwickshire at New Road
Warwickshire were frustrated at New Road as persistent rain ended the County Championship derby when they needed just two more wickets to beat Worcestershire.Chasing 327 for victory, Worcestershire were 181-8 when the players went off for bad light just before tea. Much to the Bears' anguish, rain then arrived to wash out the last 47 overs.Worcestershire had resumed on the final day on 54-2 and appeared destined for defeat when they declined to 87-6 against an attack led by fit-again Chris Rushworth (3-30) and Chris Woakes (3-53).Warwickshire were closing in on victory, but Matthew Waite (44 not out), Ethan Brookes (34) and number 10 Tom Taylor showed great resolve to defy long enough for rain to come to their side's rescue.Finding 327 runs on a difficult pitch under thick cloud against an attack led by Woakes and Rushworth is about as tough an assignment as county cricket gets and, sure enough, Worcestershire wickets were soon falling on the final morning. The overnight batters fell in successive balls when Gareth Roderick (37) was adjudged lbw to Rushworth and Kashif Ali edged Woakes to second slip where Beau Webster took a superb catch, diving forward to his right.If the batters were blameless in those two dismissals, that was not the case four overs later when Brett D'Oliveira lifted a leg-stump half-volley from Rushworth straight to long leg. When Rob Jones nicked a perfect outswinger from Ed Barnard to wicketkeeper Kai Smith, it was 87-6.Waite and Brookes blended the inevitable playing and missing with sound defence and selective counter-attack to add 61 from 63 balls before the latter's middle stump was plucked out by Ethan Bamber. Woakes soon had Ben Allison caught behind but Taylor joined Waite to consume 38 minutes before the weather closed in.Warwickshire were denied the victory they, and in particular Sam Hain's superb batting – 86 and 87 not out on a pitch on which only one other player passed 50 – deserved. Daniel Dubois urged to use Frank Bruno as inspiration after crushing Usyk defeat
Daniel Dubois is not expected to fight for at least six months but has been urged to draw inspiration from Frank Bruno in his attempt to bounce back from a second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. Dubois lost for the third time in his career after he was stopped in the fifth round at Wembley on Saturday night to new undisputed world heavyweight champion Usyk. British boxer Dubois (22-3, 21KOs) played his part in four highly-competitive rounds but was put down by a vicious right punch and while he bravely made the count, Usyk delivered a sensational left hit titled 'Ivan' to bring the rematch to a close. It means former IBF-belt holder Dubois is back in rebuild territory – like in 2023 after his first loss to Usyk in Poland – and Queensberry chief Frank Warren challenged the 27-year-old to regroup again. Warren talked up the example of Dubois' compatriot Bruno, who lost his first three world titles fights before he finally clinched the WBC belt in his 44th bout back in 1995. Asked how long Dubois will need out of the ring, Warren said: 'About six months out. It won't be before then. 'I thought up until that (fifth) round it was a pretty good fight to watch. Daniel is obviously very disappointed. 'He has got to learn from it. He is only 27. I look at Frank Bruno for example, three times he fought for a world title and he got it on the fourth attempt. 'Daniel has won a world title so hopefully he will come back, but the bottom line is it was Usyk's night and he is a special, special boxer.' Dubois earned this opportunity after a golden 10-month period where he stopped Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua, but Usyk again showed the difference in level at the summit of the blue-riband division. Warren felt Dubois got 'careless' during round five after he had pushed Usyk early on during a pulsating contest in London. 'That is what Daniel needs to learn from this fight, to try and learn and develop the mental attitude that Usyk has,' Warren explained. 'Daniel didn't stick to the task, he got careless, he dropped his hands and paid the price. 'For Daniel now, he'll have a little break, think about things and he has got to resurrect himself. 'What level? He's got to come back and make a statement. He needs to make a statement against a quality fighter like he did last time. 'There are lots of fighters over the years who have been beaten and come back even stronger. That is what he has to do. 'He can punch, he can hurt you and it's just developing other aspects of his game.' Dubois' trainer Don Charles backed his fighter to bounce back, with Joseph Parker a potential option in 2026 if Usyk was to vacate his WBO title or low-key domestic bouts with Derek Chisora, Dillian Whyte or Joe Joyce, who won their first encounter five years ago. Charles added: 'We tried to get going. He is a young champion Daniel Dubois, 27 years old, remarkable what he has achieved to date. 'He will be back from this stronger. Usyk is a generational great, if you're going to lose to someone, lose to someone like that. He'll be back from this.'

The story of 'the most famous bench in golf'
For almost 15 years it has been dubbed the most famous bench in proudly on the sixth tee at Royal Portrush, with views of the beach below and coast for miles either side, it has gone viral at this year's of the sport's biggest names - including Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm - have all been pictured resting up at the back end of the inscription reads: "Jim McDowell - from just a few of his many golfing friends to mark the occasion of his 70th birthday". But what is the story behind it? It involves camaraderie and friendship, something at the heart of golf. "Dad's not with us any more but he used to play every Wednesday at Royal Portrush with a group of hackers," said Jim's daughter, Zoe. "They had the best time and they would have a wee regroup at the halfway house and play pretty well on the back nine. "They eventually all became friends and it was a really eclectic mix of people that Dad brought together, so they decided on his 70th they would chip in and get him a bench." Zoe said the secretary of Royal Portrush at the time picked the location on the iconic sixth tee and it was unveiled as a surprise to Jim for his big day."She knew the lie of the land and we think she picked the best spot," Zoe added."It was a surprise for him and it's been a joy to enjoy it ever since. "Dad was really excited because he was one of the few people to get a bench while they were still alive. He would often sit on it with his friends and have the craic. "There have been a lot of stories and family memories from the bench, and now it's been amazing to see so many people from this Open enjoying it."Claire, Jim's other daughter, said her father "would have absolutely loved" seeing some of the sport's biggest names enjoy his bench at the sisters added that they come and visit the bench every year to reflect on memories of their dad. In Claire's words, "most people go to a grave. We go to a bench"."We were so excited and we know Dad would have got such a kick from it," she said while enjoying the Open with Zoe on Saturday."He would have loved it if he was still here. "It's been a bit mad, but we always thought it was the best bench in golf. There was never any dispute around that for us, it's pretty cool." The bench is a legacy of friendship - in a way that only a sport like golf can provide - and now others can enjoy a moment of tranquillity, reflection or craic - including some of the sport's biggest names.
