Man pleads guilty to theft of £80,000 candelabra from Cyfarthfa Castle
A man has pleaded guilty to stealing a candelabra worth £80,000 from Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil in April.
Henry Tyson Wilsher, 31, walked out of the museum with the valuable object back in April after smashing a glass cabinet to steal it, shocking staff and schoolchildren who were on a school trip at the time.
South Wales Police launched a manhunt to try and find the thief, and the Leicestershire man has appeared in court in connection with the incident on 8 April.
Appearing via video link before Teeside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 24 June, Wilsher pleaded guilty to theft, receiving stolen goods, and criminal damage.
He admitted stealing the candelabra from the castle, dishonestly receiving a Ford Fiesta knowing or believing it to be stolen, and criminal damage after damaging a glass cabinet to access the candelabra.
The court heard that the candelabra - one of the museum's most prized objects - is yet to be recovered.
Wilsher, of Bagworth in Leicestershire, was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at Teeside Crown Court on 15 July.
Merthyr Tydfil Council leader Brent Carter previously told ITV Wales of the "frightening" incident: "It was awful. There were sixty schoolchildren here from Cyfarthfa Park Primary.
"They were here enjoying themselves, looking around the museum, and a gentleman came in, picked a house brick out of his pocket, and smashed the casing, tore back the glass and stole the candelabra."

Oisin Murphy clear to continue riding after drink driving charge
The reigning champion jockey is due to appear in court next week in Reading after being charged over a road traffic accident in which a car hit a tree in April Champion jockey Oisin Murphy is clear to continue riding for the time being after being charged with a drink driving offence. The reigning titleholder, who has won the Flat championship four times, is due to appear before magistrates in Reading next Thursday July 3. The news broke on Thursday when Thames Valley released a statement detailing the offences he faces. "A man has been charged in connection with an ongoing investigation into a serious road traffic collision in Hermitage, West Berkshire,' the statement said. "Last Thursday (19/6) Oisin Murphy, aged 29, of Beales Farm Road, Lambourn, Hungerford, was charged by postal requisition with one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit of alcohol and one count of failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside. "The charge is in connection with a single vehicle road traffic collision around 12.05am on Sunday 27 April this year when a grey Mercedes A Class left the road and crashed into a tree. "Murphy is due to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on 3 July. It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media as this is a live investigation." Murphy was arrested and released on police bail after a car hit a tree in April. He had ridden three winners at Leicester the day before but missed his rides at Southwell on the day of the accident due to what were described on the stewards' report as 'travel issues'. He was back in the saddle at Windsor on the Monday. Murphy has ridden 86 winners in 2025, more than any other jockey, and leads the jockeys' championship with 49 winners. He had a very successful Royal Ascot meeting last week where he rode five winners. The jockey has a full schedule of mounts over the coming days. He has five rides at Doncaster on Friday, six at York on Saturday, five at Ffos Las on Sunday, eight at Windsor on Monday and is then due to ride at Chelmsford on Tuesday and Thirsk on Wednesday. He has no further rides booked next week. In the wake of news of the charges, a statement from the British Horseracing Authority said: 'The BHA is aware of an update issued by Thames Valley Police this afternoon regarding Mr Oisin Murphy. We are now seeking to gather as much information as possible in order to consider what, if any, implications there are as a result of this development.' The regulator has issued further guidance to confirm there is nothing to prevent Murphy continuing to ride. As the case is an ongoing legal matter involving criminal charge the BHA would be likely to await the outcome of the jockey's court appearance before considering any further response.

NI race riots: Total number of arrests rises to 41 as 16-year-old boy charged
A 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old man have been charged with riot in relation to disorder which took place in Ballymena on June 9, and appeared in court on Wednesday June 26. A 19-year-old man is also due before Coleraine Magistrates' Court today after being charged with riot. Meanwhile, a 50-year-old female arrested in Portadown has been charged with four offences including intentionally encouraging riot and incitement to commit criminal damage. She is due before Craigavon Magistrates' Court on July 23. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service. Watch: Footage released of Matthew Brogan who has been jailed after taking part in Belfast race riot 'out of boredom' Disorder took place this month in several towns across Northern Ireland, fuelled by racial tensions. What started as a vigil for a teenage girl on June 9 quickly escalated into riots targeting immigrant communities, triggered by the court appearance of two 14-year-old Romanian-speaking boys charged with attempted rape. Violent scenes unfolded in towns like Ballymena, Portadown, Larne, Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Coleraine, Derry, and east Belfast. Rioters targeted immigrant homes and businesses, setting fires and launching petrol bombs, bricks, fireworks, and missiles. Over 64 officers were injured across Northern Ireland, including 41 in Ballymena and 23 in Portadown. One teenage rioter told police 'pure stupidity' was behind his reasoning for taking part in violent racially motivated disorder in Ballymena, it was revealed last week.
