What are Wrexham's odds of getting promoted to the Premier League this season?
It has been one of the more bizarre sporting stories of recent years. Plenty of eyebrows were raised and laughs stifled when it was announced that Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney would take over as co-owners of Wrexham AFC. Once the deal went through, the general consensus was that the pair would not actually retain an interest in the daily occurrences of a North Wales football club who'd dropped out of the English Football League in 2008 and had five unsuccessful play-off campaigns in the fifth tier to get back in. The docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham, would be good for a laugh at least as it tracked a club owned by a couple of men completely out of their depth. Advertisement How wrong could we be. The pair got the bug and routinely flew over for matches, occasionally bringing along their wives. Some of the most famous people on earth were watching fifth-tier football and it seemed as though the world had turned upside down. But surely star power could only take the club so far? Well, just a few months ago, Wrexham completed their third successive promotion, an unprecedented achievement in the English Football League. In the immediate aftermath of that success, McElhenney summed it up with the words: 'Not. Done. Yet.' In recent years, it feels like it's always sunny in this particular part of north-east Wales, but can the club reach the top flight for the very first time in its history? Well, according to the punters, they have a decent chance to make it four promotions in four seasons and make history in all kinds of ways. It is not easy to know whether those putting money on Wrexham are doing so because they genuinely believe they will go up or because they are the big story. The bookmakers have Wrexham about ninth-favourites to go up. It feels like a similar story to Manchester United, with many fans lumping on Ruben Amorim's side to win the upcoming Premier League off the back of a season that saw them finish 15th. Could it just be that Wrexham are the most recognisable team globally outside the English top flight and people are betting accordingly? According to BetMGM, in the nation in which the documentary and its stars are best known, 54.6 percent of all tickets (individual bets) and 81.6 percent of all handle (total dollar amount of wagers) is on Wrexham to get promoted in the English Championship market. Clearly not many Americans are betting on the Championship, but those who are are plumping for the team they know from the FX documentary. It's remarkable that star power seems to have as much importance now as in the golden age of Hollywood. In the UK, Betfair gives Wrexham 25/1 odds to win the league, putting them joint-eighth in the odds. Their odds for promotion range from 11/2 to 7/1 depending on where you look. Far from favourites, but not long shots either. Advertisement Manager Phil Parkinson has gone under the radar slightly, perhaps because he's not in Deadpool or the like. He sealed his sixth career promotion last term and only four managers in the history of English football have managed more: Graham Taylor, Dave Bassett and Jim Smith with seven and Neil Warnock with eight. The aforementioned men are household names, something Parkinson would surely become should he go all the way with Wrexham. His ability to freshen up the squad as they're progressed through the divisions has been admirable with only a handful of starters from the League Two days still involved. In signing Sam Smith for £2m, Wrexham broke their record outlay for a player in January and that investment proved to be a sound one as he helped the club secure promotion to the second tier. The most recent accounts suggest the club already had a revenue comparable to a top-half Championship club and that was just covering the season in League Two. Clearly the owners will need to splash the cash to achieve their ambitions, but there is nothing to suggest they will not do so as they bid to give this story a Hollywood ending. It is all a far cry from just five years ago when the club was run by supporters. While the summer transfer window still has a long way to go, Wrexham have already signed forward Ryan Hardie, who scored 22 goals in 61 starts and 77 total appearances over the last two seasons in the Championship for Plymouth Argyle, and Wales international goalkeeper Danny Ward while seeing Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher depart after playing starring roles on the pitch and in the show. In terms of the stadium, Wrexham have to take a step backward as they look to make progress in the future. The capacity will be under 10,000 this season as redevelopment of the ground begins in earnest. In a league as competitive as the Championship, this is far from ideal. That being said, there is a sense that a new and improved stadium is a must if they are serious about getting to the Premier League and, harder still, staying there. The money placed on Wrexham to get promoted is undoubtedly linked to the celebrity of the owners and just what a focal point the club has been in recent years as a result of the documentary. They are almost certainly now the most recognisable club outside of the Premier League in the English football pyramid, and now it remains to be seen whether they can silence the doubters one more time and join the ranks of Liverpool and Manchester United at the top table. 'Harry Potter' star Emma Watson banned from driving for 6 months after speeding offense
Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding in her Audi S3, according to British news outlets. The 35-year-old star, who played Hermione Granger in the film franchise, drove 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford, England, on July 31 last year, BBC reported. The offense was caught on a speed camera on a restricted road in the city. Watson was charged via mail and pleaded guilty to the offense on March 3. On Wednesday, the actress was sentenced for the violation at a lower court in Wycombe. She did not attend the 5-minute hearing. In addition to the six-month driving ban, the actress was also fined £1,044 (roughly $1,400 U.S.), which she has to pay within 28 days. This is Watson's fourth driving offense in less than two years, according to the Daily Mail. She received three points on her license for this July 2024 speeding offense, in addition to nine points from driving offenses in January 2024 and October and November of 2023. At the time of the speeding incident, Watson was driving her Audi S3, which was towed away by police last year after it was illegally parked while she met with her mom for lunch at a pub across the street, the Mirror reported. The actress has been studying for a doctorate at Oxford University. Watson rose to fame in the eight Harry Potter films that premiered from 2001 until 2011. J.K. Rowling's beloved books are now being turned into an HBO television series, set to debut in 2027. The role of Hermione Granger will be played by 11-year-old Arabella Stanton. Coincidentally, in a separate hearing at the same court on July 16, another Harry Potter star was also handed the same sentence for speeding. Zoë Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was also banned from driving for six months and fined £1,044 for driving 46 mph in a 40 mph zone in August 2024 in Berkshire, England, according to the Mirror. Like Watson, the 76-year-old also had nine points on her license before the speeding offense. Wanamaker did not attend the sentencing.
