Pair of Oklahoma Sooners included on The Athletic's 'Freaks List'

USA Today7 hours ago
The Oklahoma Sooners have a roster ready to climb the SEC mountain in 2025. Less than four weeks out from the start of the 2025 season, Oklahoma has a lot to prove, but they have a group of talented players ready to rewrite the narratives surrounding Oklahoma football.
A couple of those players will be leaders for the Sooners in running back Jaydn Ott and safety Robert Spears-Jennings. The pair were featured on Bruce Feldman's annual "Freak List" (subscription required), where he highlights players from across the country who were off the charts in physical testing this offseason.
Starting off, Ott came in at No. 55 on Feldman's list.
Ott tested incredibly well in the squat (485 pounds), bench (370 pounds), and power clean (315 pounds), and the Oklahoma strength and conditioning staff measured his max velocity at 21.6 mph and max acceleration at 12.1 mph. All important numbers for a running back. Running backs have to be able to get going in a hurry and his lifting numbers display a player with the leg strength to be difficult to bring down in the open field.
Ott was a big spring portal addition for the Oklahoma Sooners. Though they had a talented running back group, Jim Nagy and Brent Venables didn't hesitate to add the former Cal star. His explosiveness jumps off the screen. He's a big-play threat every time he touches the football and will add a dynamic element to the Sooners' offense.
Arbuckle plans to put Ott in a number of situations to succeed this season, including lining him up in the slot and out wide to take advantage of his explosiveness. Ott's going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
The other player that landed on the list is former four-star safety out of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Robert Spears-Jennings. He was ranked No. 82 on Feldman's Freak List.
Spears-Jennings matched Ott in max velocity at 21.6 mph but bested the star running back in max acceleration at 12.8 mph. The Oklahoma product showed big gains in the strength department as well, squatting 510 pounds and benching 330 pounds. He's a force in every facet of the game, but showed a prowess to blitz off the edge in Oklahoma's defense, recording 2.5 sacks last season. It takes a special type of accelration and speed to explode off the line of scrimmage and get to the quarterback before an offensive lineman even knows you're coming.
Robert Spears-Jennings has been with the Oklahoma Sooners since arriving in the 2022 recruiting class. In his time with the Sooners, he's flashed speed and explosiveness from his safety spot. Even when he was seeing just rotational snaps, he'd flash his potential with his big-time athleticism.
Now he's one of the leaders of a defense expected to take another big step in 2025. That explosiveness and athleticism will lead the way for a disruptive Sooners defense.
Oklahoma has several other players who are big-time athletes who could be featured on this list down the road. Taylor Wein, Peyton Bowen, Elijah Thomas, Jayden Jackson, David Stone, Eddy Pierre-Louis, and more. Especially with the way Jim Nagy is evolving the scouting approach at Oklahoma, the Sooners will continue to build a roster with elite athletes.

Trevor Goosby makes Bruce Feldman's annual ‘Freaks List'

Fox and The Athletic reporter Bruce Feldman is known for his annual Freaks List. It's a collection of the craziest and wildest athletes in college football each season. This year, Trevor Goosby made it. [Sign up for Inside Texas TODAY and get the BEST Longhorns coverage!] Feldman talked about Texas' new starting left tackle in 2025. 'Once ranked as the 34th best offensive tackle prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, Goosby has proven to be a terrific evaluation. As a redshirt freshman last season, he started two games, one at left tackle and the other at right. PFF gave Goosby an 80.8 pass blocking grade for the season, which was higher than Cameron Williams, Texas' starter at right tackle, although the freshman had a much smaller sample size. At 6-7 1/3, 311 pounds, Goosby clocked a flying 10-yard sprint of 1.44 seconds, grading at an extremely high level in terms of his acceleration for an offensive lineman. His max speed of 20 mph this offseason was almost as impressive. He bench pressed 365 pounds and jumped the highest of any of the Longhorn O-linemen. His leaping ability and body control are also evident in this video of him doing a 360-dunk last spring.' Goosby has held it down at left tackle since Kelvin Banks left for the NFL. Big shoes to fill for the former three-year starter, but Goosby adds more size and athleticism to the position. He was also selected to the All-SEC Preseason Third Team two weeks ago. It runs in the family. His father, Michael Goosby, played in the NFL, and Trevor's little brother, , is a highly-rated basketball prospect for the Class of 2026. Our Ian Boyd discussed Goosby this offseason. 'Adapting to Goosby's strengths In the run game, it's not obvious much will need to change in the transition from Banks to Goosby. The new left tackle has the quickness for outside zone but also the strength and screening skill for inside zone or the power/gap run game. The inside zone game for a tackle is mostly about controlling the Edge or end across from them on their outside shoulder and ideally getting a little bit of displacement or control so they either try to fit one gap and get screened away from the back or even driven off the ball.' CFP 2025: Projecting 12-team field based on preseason US LBM Coaches Poll

The preseason US LBM Coaches Poll was unveiled on Monday, Aug. 4, setting its annual benchmark for where teams stand entering the 2025 season. There assuredly will be plenty of movement in the top 25 poll between now and the College Football Playoff, including in Week 1, which will feature a rare "Game of the Century." And, of course, teams will overachieve or underachieve throughout the season — this is college football, after all. Texas made program history with their first-ever preseason No. 1 selection in the Coaches Poll, followed by eight other SEC programs. The rankings weren't as keen on the Longhorns' archrival, Oklahoma, which wasn't included in the rankings for the first time since 1999 (Oklahoma had the most votes of any unranked team). Michigan football a top-15 team in preseason coaches poll

The 2025 college football preseason coaches poll was released Monday, and Michigan Wolverines football checked in No. 14. The Maize and Blue finished the 2024 campaign unranked but received 20 votes in the final installment, going 8-5 in their first year under head coach . Texas is ranked No. 1 heading into the season, with the rest of the top 10 filled out by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Clemson, No. 7 Oregon, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 LSU and No. 10 Miami. Michigan is also behind No. 11 Arizona State, No. 12 Illinois and No. 13 South Carolina. The Wolverines are the fifth-highest rated Big Ten team, behind No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon and No. 12 Illinois. The only other team from the league to appear in the poll is No. 19 Indiana. The SEC led the way with nine teams in the top 25, including four in the top nine. The Big Ten has the second most among conferences with six, including Michigan. While Michigan won its rivalry and trophy games — versus Ohio State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Michigan State — the team disappointed with an 8-5 record a season ago. The Wolverines believe times can be better in 2025, however. 'Last year, we hit a couple of speed bumps, but we didn't allow those to become roadblocks,' Moore said at Big Ten Media Days. 'We overcame a lot of adversity and had a successful end of the year. But really, we're not living on that. We know that's done. We know that's past us and our jobs now are to write a new story on what the University of Michigan and Team 146 is all about. 'We're a team. It's not one person who wins or loses a game; it's a team. So for us, we've done a really good job of being a cohesive unit and team over me and gaining trust with each other and being in the battle. We're just gonna be a better team this year.' Coaches poll: Preseason top 25 in 2025 1. Texas (28 first-place votes)2. Ohio State (20)3. Penn State (14)4. Georgia (3)5. Notre Dame6. Clemson (2)7.
