NZD $9.6 billion cloud spend looms but most are unprepared
The Spark State of Cloud 2025 report surveyed 400 IT decision-makers, revealing a significant gap between the recognition of cloud's strategic importance and actual readiness among organisations to implement it effectively.
The report found that 70% of New Zealand businesses identify cloud computing as essential for future growth, but only 34% possess the infrastructure, governance, and technical maturity needed to make the most of their cloud investments.
Despite these challenges, cloud technology adoption and investment are increasing across the country. Forecasts from IDC suggest that expenditure on public cloud services in New Zealand will nearly double from NZD $5 billion in 2024 to NZD $9.6 billion by 2028. This surge is expected to result in over NZD $22 billion in new revenue over the next four years, with public cloud contributing an estimated NZD $24.3 billion to the national economy in 2024 alone.
Mark Beder, Spark Customer Director for Enterprise and Government, highlighted the need for stronger governance to boost business capabilities. He called for closer cooperation between executive leadership and IT teams when managing cloud and AI investments.
"You can't unlock the value of AI, automation, or advanced analytics if you're building on outdated cloud infrastructure. Yet, over half of IT leaders say business decision-makers don't fully understand how critical cloud capability is to enabling these technologies," says Beder.
He added, "If cloud continues to be treated as just an IT issue, New Zealand businesses risk being unable to scale innovation and realise ROI from advanced technologies. It's time to bring cloud into the boardroom and recognise it as the next competitive edge for businesses.
"Spark's purpose is to help all of New Zealand win big in a digital world. Cloud platforms provide agile and scalable solutions for managing IT infrastructure and applications. Spark helps businesses choose the right mix of cloud services and plans tailored to your business goals.
"That's why we're introducing a Cloud Maturity self-assessment tool for businesses, so they can test where they sit. The assessment will help to identify their cloud maturity, identify capability gaps and then Spark can help plan practical solutions."
The State of Cloud 2025 report presents the Spark Cloud Maturity Framework, a five-stage model allowing organisations to benchmark their progress towards full digital transformation, ranging from early adoption to advanced integration. According to the report, only 14% of businesses have reached the highest transformational stage, with the majority still in the early phases of cloud maturity.
Beder outlined the principal barriers to cloud adoption, referencing security concerns, lack of skills, and uncertainties over costs. He said, "Security, skills, and cost uncertainty are the top barriers holding businesses back – and they're not just technical challenges, they're strategic ones. Only a handful of organisations have reached the transformational stage of cloud maturity, where cloud is enabling transformative business outcomes. That means the vast majority are missing out on the speed, agility, and innovation that strong cloud foundations enable. Businesses who want to compete in the next wave of digital transformation need to get cloud-ready – and they need to start now.
"Spark has cutting-edge technology and strategic guidance to empower your organisation to streamline operations, maximise efficiency and drive meaningful business results."
The report suggests that, by addressing these issues and fostering a robust approach to cloud infrastructure, New Zealand organisations can improve their technical capabilities and drive economic growth through digital transformation.

Denodo unveils DeepQuery for real-time data research
Denodo has launched DeepQuery, a Deep Research capability aimed at addressing the limitations of conventional generative AI tools in data analysis. DeepQuery explained DeepQuery operates differently from retrieval-augmented generation approaches, which typically focus on rephrasing indexed content. This new capability conducts structured reasoning across live and governed data sources, enabling users to investigate distributed datasets and pose complex "why" questions, such as analysing the causes of changes in customer retention across various regions. With DeepQuery, users receive multi-step analytical answers within seconds, a process that would previously require a significant amount of manual analysis and cross-referencing across multiple data sets. Addressing business needs DeepQuery is built to handle open-ended business questions by leveraging real-time access to enterprise data from a range of formats and departmental systems. In contrast to traditional generative AI solutions—which tend to rephrase pre-existing content—DeepQuery analyses open questions and searches multiple systems and sources to provide structured, explainable answers rooted in current information. The capability will also be able to incorporate external data sources—such as publicly available information, applications outside the organisation, and data from trading partners—to complement and enhance the information already held within a business. This functionality enables users to interrogate complex, cross-functional queries that would previously take days for analysts to resolve, such as understanding the underlying reasons for quarterly changes in fund outflows. Rather than manually gathering data or generating multiple reports, DeepQuery provides connections to governed data in real time and applies reasoning capabilities to respond swiftly to intricate questions. Integration and development DeepQuery is being developed as a fully extensible component of the Denodo Platform and will be distributed as part of the Denodo AI SDK. The SDK offers pre-built APIs intended to streamline AI application development. This integration aims to allow developers and AI teams to use, experiment with, and incorporate the DeepQuery capability into various agents, copilots, or domain-specific solutions. "With DeepQuery, Denodo is demonstrating forward-thinking in advancing the capabilities of AI. DeepQuery, driven by deep research advances, will deliver more accurate AI responses that will also be fully explainable." This is according to Stewart Bond, Research VP, Data Intelligence and Integration Software at IDC, who spoke on the platform's potential impact compared to other solutions currently available. While large language models, business intelligence tools, and other applications are starting to introduce deep research capabilities utilising public web data or data-lakehouse storage, Denodo's solution is anchored in enterprise data. Data delivered and managed by DeepQuery is structured, governed, and available in real-time, made possible by the logical data management inherent to the Denodo Platform and its data virtualisation framework. The private preview phase of Denodo DeepQuery is currently underway, with Denodo inviting selected organisations to participate in its AI Accelerator Programme. Participants receive early access to DeepQuery's features and have the opportunity to provide input that will help shape its future development. "As a Denodo partner, we're always looking for ways to provide our clients with a competitive edge. Denodo DeepQuery gives us exactly that. Its ability to leverage real-time, governed enterprise data for deep, contextualised insights sets it apart. This means we can help our customers move beyond general AI queries to truly intelligent analysis, empowering them to make faster, more informed decisions and accelerating their AI journey," said Nagaraj Sastry, Senior Vice President, Data and Analytics at Encora. Model Context Protocol support Denodo also announced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP). With the inclusion of an MCP Server in the latest version of the Denodo AI SDK, any AI agents or applications utilising the SDK can be integrated with MCP-compliant clients. This aims to establish a reliable and standardised data foundation for organisations adopting agentic AI architectures based on open standards. "AI's true potential in the enterprise lies not just in generating responses, but in understanding the full context behind them. With DeepQuery, we're unlocking that potential by combining generative AI with real-time, governed access to the entire corporate data ecosystem, no matter where that data resides. Unlike siloed solutions tied to a single store, DeepQuery leverages enriched, unified semantics across distributed sources, allowing AI to reason, explain, and act on data with unprecedented depth and accuracy," said Angel Viña, CEO and Founder of Denodo.

Unison launches free online Safe Sparks safety lessons for kids
Unison Networks has expanded access to its Safe Sparks electrical safety programme for children by launching an online version, free for families, schools, and community groups across Hawke's Bay, Taupō, and Rotorua. For over two decades, the Safe Sparks Programme has been delivered in classrooms through a combination of indoor and outdoor sessions designed to educate young students about electrical safety. Unison will continue to run these in-person sessions throughout its electricity network regions, but acknowledged that classroom-based visits can only reach a limited number of students each year. The new digital format aims to address this limitation by allowing children to participate wherever and whenever they choose. The programme covers a range of topics, including identifying sources of electricity in the home, understanding how electricity is generated, and developing essential safety skills. It provides practical advice on staying safe around electrical equipment, such as power poles, lines, and distribution boxes in local communities. Rachel Masters, Unison Group General Manager, People, Safety and Culture, commented on the motivation behind extending the initiative online. "Keeping our communities and tamariki safe around electricity is at the heart of everything we do. By taking Safe Sparks digital, we're giving every whānau the opportunity to learn together, whether at home, at after school care, or during the school holidays. It's about building a safer future, one child at a time," Mrs Masters said. The Safe Sparks Digital Programme is designed for children aged 5 to 11 and features interactive elements, including short animated videos, real-life safety guidance, and activities tailored to teach children how electricity works and how to protect themselves, especially in proximity to electricity infrastructure. Since its inception in 2003, the in-person Safe Sparks Programme has reached thousands of students within the company's service areas. The online extension, which was first introduced to schools in 2024, now includes families, holiday programmes, and after-school care providers. In support of the broader community rollout, Unison has introduced spot prizes for participants who complete the online curriculum and submit a short form upon completion. Three participants will receive NZD $100 Prezzy Cards, with entries accepted until the end of October 2025. Rachel Masters encouraged families to utilise the online resource, highlighting its flexibility and accessibility. "It's a great school holiday activity, or something to do on a rainy weekend. The whole programme takes just 15 to 20 minutes, but the learning lasts a lifetime. There's no login required, it's completely free, and families can download a personalised certificate at the end. It's a fun and meaningful activity to do together," Mrs Masters said. Unison is urging parents, caregivers, educators, and community groups to utilise the new online resource and share it widely within their respective networks. The company supplies electricity to over 119,000 customers across Hawke's Bay, Taupō and Rotorua, and the new Safe Sparks Digital Programme represents an additional step in its commitment to public safety and education in the communities it serves.
