Amanda Parker at Netflights says: 'The travel hack of buying flight attendants a gift, and sweet-talking them when boarding the plane has gone viral. Kindness will always be appreciated by airline staff, so small gestures like snacks or gifts won't go unnoticed.
"However, the chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade just by handing over a box of chocolates might be slim.
"Free upgrades are usually determined by strict criteria, including frequent flyer status, ticket class, availability, and airline policies, unfortunately, not by last-minute sweet talk as you board the plane.
"The gift and sweet-talk hack may work, so it's worth a try; but, we warn you not to get your hopes up, as these moments are the exception, not the rule. You may just strike lucky if your flight attendant likes chocolate M&Ms."

As passengers board their flights for summer holidays, a flight attendant has shared the 'filthiest parts' of a plane that you should avoid touching - and it's more places than you might expect A flight attendant has shared important advice to passengers wanting to wash their hands on a plane, suggesting it could introduce more germs than it removes. Cher, a seasoned flight attendant with five years under her belt, took to social media to expose the "filthiest parts" of an aircraft as holidaymakers begin boarding flights for their much-deserved summer breaks. Known as @cherdallas on TikTok, the cabin crew member revealed: "I've seen people vomit inside the bathroom sinks numerous times so if you drop sometimes in there, I would consider it a loss. Never ever have I seen the sinks get cleaned out. The sink water that you wash your hands with is also filthy. You're not allowed to drink it because it has too much bacteria in it so washing your hands with it is probably not great. "I don't know what's in it but it constantly degrades my nails and makes them extremely brittle whether I have paint on them, gel or dip, it completely degrades the outside of it." She also claimed she has never witnessed anyone clean the window shades and has only once seen anyone clean the toilet seat. She advises passengers to always keep their shoes on as the plane carpet is riddled with germs and doesn't receive the care it needs between flights. In her post, she warned: "Sorry in advance if this grosses you out the next time you fly but everyone should have the facts." Reacting to her post, one user admitted: "I just realised that no matter how much I sanitise and clean everything around me on a plane, it's still awful." Another user chimed in: "I mean, if they wouldn't clean the sink and toilet seats when landing in a destination I am quite sure you couldn't even use them anymore. Normally when landing cleaners come to clean them - flight attendant." A third user commented: "Seat pockets are filthy too. Thankfully, there's a solution - opt for lesser-known locations. One such city that has left visitors utterly spellbound is a stunning spot in Belgium. The lively city of Ghent is well worth considering for a spontaneous trip or short getaway. It's impossible not to be impressed. The city boasts remarkable architecture, including St Bravo's Cathedral, Gravensteen Castle, and numerous churches. You can appreciate these architectural marvels while ambling along the tranquil canal, before pausing at one of the many local eateries. The city boasts an array of talented chefs who celebrate regional dishes and locally sourced ingredients. The most famous painting is the 15th-century Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Flemish Masters Jan and Hubert Van Eyck. Other highlights include Christ on a Cross by Antoon van Dyck (in Saint Michael's Church) and Triptych of Christ on the Cross by the hand of Michiel Coxie (Saint James' Church)." She continued: "Aside from the classics, Ghent is also brimming with modern art galleries and little theatres." Caro observed that few cities boast a perfectly preserved medieval fortress right in their heart. What's more, she was struck by Ghent's commitment to environmentally conscious living. She enthused: "Sustainability is their middle name. Ghent spearheaded the plant-based movement in Flanders and is still considered the veggie capital of Europe. "Aside from that it was one of the first cities to implement a low-emission zone for cars, has the largest offering of low-impact accommodations and a tons of little local artisanal shops." She was also thrilled with how simple it was to navigate the city by bike – without the congestion you'd see by the canals of Venice or Amsterdam. Caro stated: "It's a breeze to cycle around as the city centre has really good cycling infrastructure. We ended up renting a bike and cycled the 58km Lys region route around the city. "This route is one of the circular bike routes aptly named Flanders' Finest Cycle Routes. These easy to follow paths take you through the prettiest natural, cultural and culinary heritage of the region!" Getting there Ghent doesn't have its own airport, so you'll need to fly into Brussels Airport, also known as Zaventem. Direct flights to Brussels are available from Brussels Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Ryanair, United, Air Canada and Malaysia Airlines. The average flight duration from the UK is approximately an hour and 23 minutes. Brussels Airport is about 42 miles away from the centre of Ghent.
