Austin Hill earns penalty following contact with Aric Almriola in NASCAR Xfinity Indianapolis race

Yahoo3 days ago
NASCAR penalized Austin Hill for reckless driving after contact between his car and Aric Almirola in the final laps of the Pennzoil 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race on July 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Hill got loose off the bumper of Almirola, who had the faster race car with nine laps to go in the event. After re-correcting, Hill turned left and made contact with Almirola, who made significant contact with the outside wall in turn 3.
The No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was held five laps for reckless driving, a modest penalty given the damage to the race car impacting the rest of his day.
Hill said on the radio after the crash that he wasn't trying to wreck Almirola, then disagreed strongly to the news of NASCAR's penalty with an expletive-filled response.
Almirola told the CW broadcast after being released from the infield care center that it was clearly intentional from his vantage point, and criticized Hill for his actions given previous comments from Hill about being an example for the younger drivers in the series.

NASCAR still mulling championship format for 2026 and/or beyond

NASCAR is still going through the process of deciding its championship for the foreseeable future, but much to the chagrin of some fans, NBC Sports will still have a oversized say-so in what direction the sport goes. A playoff committee has been assembled, and has met multiple times this year, and is comprised of drivers, Hall of Fame inductees, broadcasters, officials, media members and broadcast executives. It's been a polarizing topic over the past week with every indication pointing towards NASCAR retaining a playoff format of some kind instead of reverting back to a season long points format. NASCAR's managing director of racing communications, Mike Forde, detailed on Wednesday's episode of his officially sanctioned 'Hauler Talk' podcast about the state of those conversations. 'We're going to have a discussion with our broadcast partners at NBC,' Forde said. 'NBC does have a seat at the table and they have a member of their team [on the playoff committee]. … There are other people at NBC who have a huge voice. Obviously, they are spending a lot of money to broadcast NASCAR. They do have a large seat at the table, so we'll be talking to them and getting their opinions on that. I feel like people have kind of scoffed at that move and have been incredulous that NBC does have such a huge voice — that feels strange to me. I feel like that is a pretty obvious thing that we need to do. They have a big voice because they write the biggest check. 'But once we come upon a menu of options, we do plan to have a fan council survey that goes out to get the fans' point of view. I know Mark Martin has put an X poll out there, Jeff Gluck has put an X poll out there, so we are also going to take a survey of our fans — that's part of our plan anyway.' Forde said a change won't be made from the status quo unless NASCAR feels very strongly that it is the right thing to do. 'TBD on really when the next step is and if we have enough time to get changes in place for 2026,' Forde said. 'I think that's something we'll work towards but making that happen as we're getting closer to the middle of August to talk to NBC and have a full-blown meeting and the aftermath of what that will be –may be a little bit tricky — but I wouldn't completely rule out 2026 changes, either. … There are really lots of opinions, so I think it's just boiling it down to the top four, getting with NBC, then getting back to the committee and then getting with NASCAR leadership to say here's what it is. 'Now, can we do that in time and feel good about it for 2026? What it comes down to is we don't want to feel like we are pushing through a change that we're going to have to change again. We want to feel really, really good about. If that can happen for 2026, great. If not, I think we're comfortable waiting for 2027.' The current format is a 16-driver, three round elimination gauntlet that is eventually decided by a one-race best-finisher-take-all finale between a final four. The format heavily rewards winning through advancing into the tournament but also advancing from round-to-round. Before this format, NASCAR used a 10 (and later 12) driver, 10-race points battle after the regular season in which the participants were the drivers highest in championship points re-seeded based on their regular season running order. Prior to that was the season long points battle which emphasized average finish over the course of the whole year.

Tyreek Hill 'didn't understand' Dolphins' offense the last three years

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Tyreek Hill says he "didn't understand the offense" over his first three years with the Miami Dolphins, despite producing record statistics as a top target. The electric wide receiver -- also known as "Cheetah" -- made the comments at training camp Friday in Miami Gardens, Fla. "I'm going to be completely honest, I didn't understand the offense for the first three years being here," Hill said. "But this year, I feel like coach [Bobby] Slowik has explained it a lot." The Dolphins made several coaching staff changes over the off-season after their offense went from the best in the NFL in 2023 to No. 18 a year later, including the dismissal of wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Wes Welker. They brought in Robert Prince and Slowik to replace Welker in those respective roles. Hill said Slowik has done a "great job of simplifying" the offense for the wide receivers room, which includes Jaylen Waddle. Hill mentioned improvements in route detail and getting where he needs to be for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He also said he is taking notes for the first time in his career. Hill became the first player in NFL history to total at least 1,700 yards in back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023. He regressed last season, totaled 959 yards and six scores on 81 catches while battling injuries and playing with backup quarterbacks for portions of the season. "A lot of people know me and Waddle are going to bust our tails each and ever day," Hill said. "But having that extra piece and coach in our ears every single day reminding us that we can be All-Pro, we can be Pro Bowlers, we can help this team win playoff games, is important also. We all need that sometimes." Improvement is necessary not only for the offense, but also to help Hill rebuild his rapport with Tagovailoa and his teammates after saying he wanted to leave the Dolphins at the end of last season. Hill has since apologized for those comments and recommitted to the franchise that gave him nearly $107 million in guaranteed money. Hill, a captain last year, said in May that he doesn't deserve to be one in 2025 because of his past mistakes. Tagovailoa said last week that Hill has shown more vulnerability lately, but their relationship remains a "work in progress." Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel commended Tagovailoa for his leadership and holding Hill accountable. Hill said Friday that Tagovailoa's pointed comments "were needed." "I'm seeing the daily investment," McDaniel said of the Hill-Tagovailoa relationship. "I think it's a well-known fact that Tua is the leader of our team and our locker room and is the franchise quarterback. And I think there's a lot to be said about a leader saying the hard things. "I think there's a lot to be said about 'Reek' and how clear they've been toward each other so that you can say these things and call a spade a spade. I see that as grown man stuff like that -- that is real -- that relationships aren't created in a vacuum of dandelions and daisies. "Relationships -- real ones, ones that matter -- you go through a process of earning and delivering on trust." Some critics of Hill believe he may have lost a step in recent years, including ratings adjusters for the Madden NFL 26 video game. They recently rated Hill, who had received a perfect 99 rating in Madden NFL 25, a 95 in the new edition They also brought Hill's speed rating down from to 98 from 99. Hill said he is in the ear of former NFL star Chad Johnson -- a ratings adjuster -- who also attended Friday's practice in Miami Gardens. He also said he plans to boycott the game if he isn't granted improved ratings. He recently provided evidence of his world class speed last month during track meets in California, when he ran 10.10- and 10.15-second times in the 100-meter events. "I told him [Johnson] that it's straight [expletive]," Hill said. "Waddle also had some words. Me and Waddle said we are going to boycott Madden. He saw me and Waddle work, so hopefully he will boost our ratings." Hill plans "to get back to" his old self, a effort he says includes being present and holding himself accountable. "I'm just trying to be the best teammate and the best version of myself I can be, everyday," Hill said. "Showing up to meetings, coming out here every day. Busting my tail in practice. I think it's important."
