Israel explores normalization with Syria, despite challenges—could this mark a turning point in Mideast relations?

Report by Amal Shehadeh, English adaptation by Karine Keuchkerian With advanced steps toward expanding the Abraham Accords and including Syria, and while Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is engaged in tough negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump to stop the Gaza war, conflicting Israeli reports have emerged about talks in Abu Dhabi on Sunday between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Israeli National Security Council head Tzachi Hanegbi. Israel did not deny the news. While some officials confirmed the meeting took place, others claimed Hanegbi did not meet al-Sharaa but met with security officials instead. Meanwhile, the Maariv newspaper reported that Hanegbi's trip to Abu Dhabi on Sunday delayed the departure of the "Wing of Zion" plane carrying U.S. officials to Washington by three hours. An Israeli report revealed direct contacts between Damascus and Tel Aviv through four channels personally overseen by Hanegbi, one of which involved Syrian security entities. The second channel of talks was supervised by Mossad head David Barnea. The third channel involved Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who previously said that Israel has an interest in an agreement with Syria, but the cornerstone of any agreement is Damascus' recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The fourth channel, also essential, involves officers from the Israeli army and Syrian security entities. In response to the stir caused by reports of the Hanegbi-Al-Sharaa meeting, a senior Israeli official briefed political reporters, saying normalization with Syria poses major challenges. The official stated that the success of the military strike on Iran, in which the United States participated, created a unique opportunity to change the face of the Middle East, including reaching agreements with Syria and Lebanon.

Qassem denies divisions within Hezbollah, says group 'has recovered'

by Naharnet Newsdesk 6 hours Hezbollah "has recovered and is now ready" to confront Israel in case of an attack on Lebanon, the group's leader Sheikh Naim Qassem said in a televised interview. The interview was recorded on June 11 but only broadcast Tuesday on Lebanese pan-Arabist news channel al-Mayadeen. Qassem said that President Joseph Aoun is being "very pressured" by the U.S. and other Arab countries to disarm Hezbollah by all means, even by force. "But he knows this would lead to strife and would not be fruitful," Qassem told journalist and director of al-Mayadeen Ghassan Bin Jeddo. "Lebanon is strong because of Hezbollah's weapons and we will not accept that Lebanon becomes weak," Qassem said, adding that the medium and heavy arms that have been destroyed during the war with Israel are south of the Litani River, in a hint that Hezbollah has weapons in other regions across the country. Qassem denied internal divisions within Hezbollah. "Usually, when there are wings, you can see them, right? Because they fly... I haven't seen any wings yet," he sarcastically said. Two months of full-fledged war with Israel last fall dealt heavy blows to Hezbollah, with its longtime leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah killed in a September Israeli airstrike. Hezbollah also lost a strategic ally when Islamist-led rebels ousted longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. "Hezbollah communicated with the Lebanese army when problems occurred in the Hermel area" on the Lebanese-Syrian border, Qassem told Bin Jeddo. "There were armed men trying to enter Lebanese territory but Hezbollah was not involved and we have no intention of fighting them so we communicated with the army."

Israel says destroyed Hezbollah arms in 'special, targeted' ground ops

Israel says destroyed Hezbollah arms in 'special, targeted' ground ops The Israeli army said Wednesday its troops have recently destroyed alleged Hezbollah arms and infrastructure in Jabal Blat and al-Labbouneh in south Lebanon in "special, targeted operations". In a statement, the Israeli army said it identified Hezbollah weapons and infrastructure in several areas in south Lebanon and destroyed them to "prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing itself in the area." The statement claimed the targets were arms depots, firing positions, hidden weapons including a launcher with multiple canisters, a heavy machine gun, and dozens of explosive devices. "Reserve fighters destroyed terrorist infrastructure" in Jabal Blat and located "weapons hidden in a tangled area in the al-Labbouneh area, including a launcher with multiple canisters, a heavy machine gun, and dozens of explosive devices", the statement said. "The forces confiscated and destroyed the military equipment and weapons found in the area."
