Decide on resuming Siri Jagan committee set up to process dog bite compensation cases: Kerala HC to govt
The bench of Justice C S Dias was considering multiple petitions related to the stray dog menace in Kerala. HC noted that around 9,000 applications for compensation are currently pending before the committee and observed that the govt cannot remain inactive on the issue. If the govt fails to take a decision, the court said it would appoint someone to continue the task and indicated it may ask Justice Siri Jagan to carry on until a decision is made.
One of the petitioners, Keerthana Sarin, was attacked by stray dogs on May 30 while returning home from Nedumangad town in Thiruvananthapuram. She highlighted the hazardous conditions faced by residents due to the stray dog threat.
In a related matter, the secretary of the Ranni-Perunadu grama panchayat challenged an order directing the panchayat to pay compensation to a victim of a stray dog attack. The court observed that since the state has informed, in another case, that it is considering declaring stray dog attacks a state disaster, the question of panchayats paying compensation may not arise.

Once such a declaration is made, the compensation would fall under the disaster management fund, making the authorities duty-bound to pay it, the court said.
The matter was adjourned to July 21.
In another petition filed by T N Manoj Kumar of Panampilly Nagar, Kochi, HC directed the Kochi corporation to ensure that T G Sunil Kumar does not shelter stray dogs in his residence without a valid license under Section 437 of the Kerala Municipality Act. The court noted that 60 stray dogs were being housed there without proper permission. This matter was adjourned to July 28.

Big challenges ahead for new DIG Vartika Katiyar
Ballari: Vartika Katiyar, a 2010-batch IPS officer, was appointed as the deputy inspector general of police (DIG) of Ballari zone. She previously served as the DIG of the State Home Guards and Civil Defence Corps. Following the retirement of BS Lokesh, the former Inspector General of Police of Ballari zone on April 30, Vartika assumed the position that remained unfilled since then. The Ballari zone encompasses Ballari, Vijayanagara, Koppal, and Raichur districts, featuring significant locations including the Unesco World Heritage Site Hampi, iron ore mines at Ballari and Sandur, Tungabhadra dam in Koppal, thermal power stations in Ballari and Raichur, and lengthy borders with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. As a result, there was a rise in interstate traffic, attracting tourists and workers from both India and abroad. Naturally, this led to an increase in crime cases, with the highest number reported in the Hampi Development Authority. The new DIG is also tasked with managing the multitude of unauthorised resorts and the range of illegal activities taking place there. In the first week of March this year, incidents such as the sexual assault of an Israeli tourist and a local resort owner in Sanapur, located in the Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district, the murder of a tourist from Odisha, and the assault on an American national were highlighted in both national and international media. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I'm retiring! In this context, R Hithendra, the additional director general of police (Law & Order), sent a letter to Koppal SP Ram L Arasiddi on June 30, directing him to take immediate action to safeguard foreign tourists. Nevertheless, issues such as illegal mining, unauthorised resorts, gambling, and illegal sand smuggling persist without interruption. In the meantime, the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority (HWHAMA) scheduled an eviction operation for July 16 to remove illegally constructed resorts at various locations along the Tungabhadra River, including Sanapura in Gangavathi. This sparked curiosity among the local residents regarding how the new DIG will tackle this seemingly insurmountable challenge. Additionally, Vijayanagara district also underwent administrative changes with Jahnavi S, a 2019-batch IPS officer previously serving as DCP in Mysuru, being appointed as the new superintendent of police. She replaces Dr Srihari Babu BL, who served as SP for 2.8 years and was transferred to Bengaluru as CCB DCP.

Frequent Ama Bus accidents raises concern over road safety
1 2 Bhubaneswar: A serious concern has been raised over the safety of commuters and pedestrians amid back-to-back accidents caused by Mo Bus, rebranded as Ama Bus, operated by Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. In a recent incident, a person travelling from Bhubaneswar to Cuttack died near Barang Block square in Cuttack after being run over by a speeding Ama Bus on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Subhendu Parida, a resident of Rani Haat. In May, an old man walking on the road was first struck and then dragged by an Ama Bus at Khandagiri Square, resulting in the man's death on the spot. The driver fled the scene while the irate locals vandalised the bus involved in the fatal incident. The frequency of these accidents has triggered a debate among people about the safety of both motorists and pedestrians on the roads due to dangerous and alleged rash driving by the Ama Bus drivers in the twin city. The concern grows further since the accidents are recurring despite special initiatives by CRUT, such as periodical awareness sessions for the staff on road safety protocols, daily morning safety oath-taking by the drivers, and installation of CCTVs and speed governors on the buses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo "The sight of an Ama Bus on the road is instilling fear in the mind nowadays. It is a feeling like one will never know when one will be crushed under one such bus. The frequency of the accidents despite the measures is really concerning," said Mahamaya Jena, Sailashree Vihar resident. Jena, a daily rider of Ama Bus, now says that she prefers not to ride on such buses anymore. Patia resident Jitendra Sahoo, who witnessed an accident involving an Ama Bus on Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan Road, recalled that the driver was at fault. "The bus literally ran over a woman crossing the road near District Centre. I saw her hand was amputated. It was a horrible scene. I think that the authorities are taking steps, but the drivers and staff are somehow unable to adhere to those," Sahoo said. CRUT, the operator of Ama Buses, though has not issued any official statement on the Monday evening incident, has assured through other social media posts that such incidents will be investigated with seriousness and action will be taken accordingly.
