Help Zoë hear: A mother's heartfelt appeal for life-changing surgery for her four-year-old

All Tracy Olivari longs for is to hear her four-year-old daughter Zoë speak a full sentence — and for Zoë to finally hear her say the words: 'I love you. I'm proud of you.'
But those dreams remain heartbreakingly distant.
The Goodwood mother is making a public appeal for help to raise funds for a life-changing operation that could allow Zoë to hear for the first time. Born prematurely at just seven months, Zoë was given only hours to live. Doctors had to resuscitate her twice after birth, and she was immediately placed on life support, with severely underdeveloped lungs and around-the-clock medical care.
'The doctors told me she wouldn't make it,' Tracy recalled. 'But she proved them all wrong. She fought harder than anyone I've ever known.'

Tracy, a single mother, spent those critical days at her daughter's side, holding her hand, whispering prayers, and speaking life into her fragile little body.
'Hours turned into days, and days into months,' she said. 'And just like that, my brave girl's fighting journey began.'
Now four years old, Zoë has an unbreakable spirit — but her fight isn't over. Because of complications from her premature birth, she has profound hearing loss. She cannot hear or speak, and her condition has delayed her development, cutting her off from the world around her.
'She's supposed to start school next year,' Tracy explained. 'But she can't attend a mainstream school, and the only special needs school nearby has a waiting list that just keeps growing.'
There is hope. Doctors say that with a specialised hearing operation, Zoë could regain enough hearing to start learning to speak — and possibly attend a mainstream school. But the surgery costs R32,000, and Tracy, who works alone to provide for her family, simply cannot afford it.
'I've been trying to save up every month, but as a single mom, it's just impossible to reach that amount,' she said. 'We've also been on the public hospital's waiting list for more than a year, but nothing has happened. This year is our only window. If we miss it, she may fall too far behind.'
Tracy is now appealing to the public for help.

'I'm not just asking for money,' she said, 'I'm asking for hope. I'm asking for the chance to give my daughter a future — one where she isn't always fighting, one where she can finally rest and enjoy life like any other child.
'I am also asking for prayers because I know, that prayer carries strength, look at how far it brought us.'
She dreams of the day she can hear her daughter's voice — and of the day Zoë can hear the voices that love her most.

The operator, chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns and described in horror how he faced two gun-wielding hijackers : 'I drove for my life and theirs. 'I'm the breadwinner at home. My immediate concern was what will happen to my family if I am not here anymore and what will happen to the animals in my van. 'Then I drove for my life and theirs. 'One gunman was in front of the vehicle and the other at my side window. I am thankful to God that I was able to get away.' We are incredibly saddened that it has come to this. 'Our priority remains the safety of our staff, who often work under extreme risk to provide services to animals in crime‐ridden areas. While we continue to seek safer ways to pro‐actively serve in these communities, our commitment to animal welfare in Khayelitsha will for the immediate future be limited to Inspectorate ser‐vices only. Urgent action needed as Ga-Rankuwa parents protest unsafe school on wetland

The parents, from Bachana Mokwena Primary School, have kept their children home from school since it reopened for the second term on Tuesday due to the unsafe conditions. The classrooms for Grade R and Foundation Phase, which accommodate around 400 learners, are surrounded by underground water, sparking fears that the buildings could collapse at any moment. Chiloane has just kicked off the application process for parents and guardians seeking to enrol their children in Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2026 academic year, when the group of parents arrived at the centre and began protesting. Chiloane assured the parents that he would visit the school to assess the wetland situation and then address their grievances afterwards. According to Agnes Mashibymi, the school governing body chairperson, children in Grade R and Foundation Phase cannot play outside due to the excessive water surrounding their classrooms. "Parents are anxious, fearing the school buildings could collapse at any moment, and worried that the unhealthy environment could lead to children falling ill," she said. "We were at the Department of Education in Johannesburg yesterday, and the HOD told us that this matter has not reached his office. We decided to take advantage of the MEC's visit to confront him about our issues," she said. Moses Makhubela, one of the parents, lamented that despite escalating the issue to the relevant authorities since 2021, no one appears to be taking it seriously. "It's like they are not taking the lives of our children seriously. I am worried about my child's education, but I can't replace my child if he gets injured at school," he said. After assessing the situation at the school, Chiloane noted that the presence of water is causing the classrooms to deteriorate rapidly. He announced that the department will cordon off the affected classroom area and deploy mobile classrooms to accommodate learners starting next week. Grades 4 and 7 learners have been instructed to report to school on Friday. Chiloane also cautioned parents against closing schools, saying that doing so is against the law. He said the department will send a hydro-geologist to the school next week to assess the situation. Local councillor Violet Phalwane said the core issue is the underground water, and she had previously escalated the matter to the City of Tshwane, which promised to send engineers to the school. "Unfortunately, the learners can't come to school because it is unsafe for them to attend school. My problem is that the problem has affected other learners from other grades," she said.

EThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni provided the items during her visit to assess the damage on Saturday. Myeni also visited the families of the deceased, a 25-year-old woman and a toddler (19 months old), where she expressed her heartfelt condolences and encouraged the community to assist where they can, embodying the spirit of Ubuntu. The fire destroyed more than 100 informal structures and left 150 residents displaced, who will temporarily be housed in a community hall as arrangements are made for long-term accommodation. 'We wish to report that a roving team involving officials from the national department of human settlements, the provincial department of human settlements, and the eThekwini Municipality is already working out a plan to speed up the delivery of building material,' Duma said. 'We will await the finalisation of the verification process by disaster teams from eThekwini and Cogta (Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs).'
