Kingdom Hearts 4 gets new update as Square Enix cancels spin-off

Metro14-05-2025

Square Enix has canned a previously announced Kingdom Hearts spin-off, as it looks to 'reboot' its business.
It's been over three years since Disney crossover Kingdom Hearts 4 was revealed, in April 2022, and we haven't seen or heard anything about the sequel since.
Square Enix also announced a mobile spin-off entitled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link during the same 20th anniversary video. The GPS-based action role-playing game received a closed 'prototype test' in January 2023 and was originally supposed to come out in 2024, but it was delayed.
Now, Square Enix has announced Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link has been cancelled entirely, which is surprising as its story was supposed to lead into Kingdom Hearts 4.
'We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service,' an announcement post reads.
'Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.
'We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement.'
To sweeten the bad news, Square Enix provided an update on Kingdom Hearts 4, perhaps to reassure fans that it does still exist.
'The Kingdom Hearts series will continue,' the post adds. 'We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4, and hope you'll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates.'
While it's unclear why we haven't seen anything from Kingdom Hearts 4 for so long, Square Enix has undergone a major overhaul to its business over the past year.
Lower than expected sales for Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth caused a shift in strategy at the company, towards a more selective, higher quality approach – resulting in many cancelled projects.
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link appears to be another casualty of this pivot, but it is an interesting decision considering the spin-off was set to have ties to Kingdom Hearts 4's narrative.
In an interview with Game Informer from 2022, series director Tetsuya Nomura described Missing-Link as being 'connected in many ways' to the next mainline entry.
In its latest financial results, Square Enix emphasised its intention to 'reboot and awaken' its business, by promoting 'multi-platform strategies' and 'rebuilding the domestic studios portfolio', among other plans.
'Under the new management structure, we reviewed all projects at our domestic studios, including HDG and SD titles, and decided to discontinue development of some titles and invest additional funds in titles that require refinement, thereby steadily implementing a strategy of selecting and concentrating development resources,' reads the business plan.
'We will continue to control the scale of development investment in a disciplined manner.' More Trending
As part of this three year plan, Square Enix states its aim to 'shift from quantity to quality', with the intention of releasing 'major titles mainly in key IP steadily' after 2027.
Square Enix has several games planned for the Switch 2, including Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade.
Elsewhere in the plan, Square Enix announced it is working on a video game with TBS Television, the Tokyo-based network which is known for producing shows like Takeshi's Castle and Ninja Warrior.
While it's unclear when we could get another glimpse at Kingdom Hearts 4, the next likely candidate is Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025.

People left horrified as mum shares eye-watering amount she spent at Disneyland

A mother has shocked the internet by revealing how much money she spent on a trip to Disneyland. In a video posted on TikTok, Ashley Bradford (@ashleyb_ox), shares exactly what she bought with €270/£229 at Disneyland Paris. The mother first spent money on a Little Mermaid -themed bubble wand, which she explained cost €30/£25.64. Next, she spent €19/£16.24 on face painting for her daughter before buying two Disney-themed macaroons for €5/£4.27. One of the pricier items on her spending list were two burger meals and a kids meal for €49.50/£42.30. She then buys three lollies for €12/£10.26, with a Lilo & Stitch and Minnie Mouse theme, before getting another three lollies for the same price. The family purchased lots of sweet treats throughout the day, including a sweet stick €6.50/£5.56, a Mickey Mouse cookie for €3.50/£2.99, popcorn for €6.50/£5.56, candyfloss for €6/£5.13, a Mickey Mouse donut for €6.50/£5.56 and two crepes for €15/£12.82. When it comes to savoury food, Ashley and family also purchased three hot dogs, one fries, chicken nuggets and three drinks for €60/£51.28, on top of their earlier burger meals. The last buys on the family's spending list were an Ariel-themed key ring for €8.50/£7.26 and a light-up Mickey Mouse toy for €25/£21.37. But while Ashley and her family might have enjoyed their trip to Disneyland, people were pretty horrified by their high spending costs. 'Francescondon79' says: 'Why would anyone throw away their money like that'. 'Heather Simms' adds: 'The bubble wand at 30 euros had me almost choking on my own down Disney.' Another person says: 'I don't understand, this is a place for kids and they sell the things so expensive!' However, many TikTokers weren't surprised by how much the family had spent. One person says: 'I just got back from there. Spent £2,100 spending money in five days there, I have five kids. Soon adds up.' And 'Tiffany Ashworth' says: 'Is it just me that doesn't think this place is expensive?' But Ashley replied to the comment saying: 'If you think though park tickets on top of that at €200/£170 plus a day for a small family. If you've a few kids, it soon would add up.' It comes as a father who took his family of five on a day-trip to Orlando's Walt Disney World resort revealed the unexpectedly high cost of their outing. The man, from Florida, US, took to social media to break down the family's outgoings throughout the day, which later sparked a heated debate among viewers about the importance of budgeting. In a video, reposted by @financedystop on X, the father documented the price of the family's tickets, parking, meals and snacks, as well as the staggering cost of items in souvenir shops. Before the family even entered the park, the father revealed he forked out $30/£22 for all-day parking.

Disney+ gives streamers a subscription for £1.99 a month - but it's ending soon

Streaming fans in the UK looking to grab a deal on Disney+ are in luck because the company is handing out the service for only £1.99 per month. The House of Mouse currently has a deal where shoppers can get four months of Disney+ for £1.99 - less than a Costa coffee. But there's something Brits need to know. The deal is ending pretty soon on June 30 so for those who may have fell off the service or want to explore what new shows and series are playing, now is the time to act. You can grab the deal here. Disney enthusiasts can now enjoy a plethora of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marve l - all for less than the price of a Starbucks or for less than a meal deal. The service also boasts an array of Star Wars series, such as Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Clone Wars, ensuring there's ample content to keep viewers entertained for months. Classic Walt Disney animated film s like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Lion King are also available for your viewing pleasure. Moreover, there are a host of new shows slated for release in June, including Snow White (June 11), Ironheart (June 25), season 4 of FX's The Bear (June 26) and the gripping new sci-fi drama, Alien: Earth (August 13). These join recent hits and critically acclaimed series like The Stolen Girl. This enticing offer lasts for four months, allowing streaming fans to indulge in the service until November for less than what most would spend on a Starbucks. However, it's worth noting that the £1.99 deal is for the Standard with Ads version, meaning viewers will have to tolerate ads while watching their favourite shows, which could be a tad irksome. There's tons of great reviews on Trustpilot about Disney+. One streamer said: "Very good selection, friendly support and easy to cancel if you need to. Very easy to navigate their site and the openness and transparency they show should be a model for others.". However, one shopper did complain about the amount of ads. They added: "Way too many adverts. Luckily I got it free for 3 months, but would not pay to extend it." However, if shoppers would rather avoid Disney Plus, there are alternatives to consider snapping up. Sky has a number of streaming deals, including the Sky Stream service for £15 a month. Sports fans can also watch DAZN for free for a limited time thanks to a trial deal.
