PTRS Reduces Students At Risk Of Failing SPM To 700 In Selangor -- Amirudin

Barnama13-06-2025
BANGI, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Selangor People's Tuition Programme (PTRS) has recorded a proud success when the number of Form Four students identified as having the potential to fail the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in Selangor dropped to only about 700 this year.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the figure showed a significant decrease compared to 14,000 students in 2018 and around 2,000 last year.
"This success is the result of the intervention and also the very precise collaboration between the State Education Department, state agencies and the state government as a whole," he said at a press conference after launching the 'Program Tekad Pendidikan Kita Selangor 2025' here today.
To expand the benefits of the programme, Amirudin said the state government would increase its allocation of RM1 million this year to enable between 20,000 to 30,000 Form Four and Five students to join PTRS.
Meanwhile, he said that the Selangor Foundation is now responsible for coordinating the entire education ecosystem in the state, covering primary, secondary and higher education.
Amirudin said the move is part of the restructuring of the state education system ahead of Selangor Budget 2026 on the findings of the State Education and Higher Education Standing Committee meeting.
"We are examining the entire education ecosystem by identifying existing agencies and units in implementing the state's education programmes in an integrated manner," he said.
According to him, 2026 Budget will focus on raising student interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields as well as strengthening intervention programmes to reduce students at risk of failing the SPM.
Apart from formal education, the state government also pays attention to the development of students' personalities through extra-curricular programmes such as field trips and foster schools.

In addition to Kian Kok's junior and senior students, the fair also saw enthusiastic attendance from students of several national secondary schools here. Accompanied by their teachers, hundreds of these students took part in the event, fostering a positive atmosphere of inter-school collaboration. Many parents were also present, eager to explore education pathways and scholarship options for their children. The opening ceremony was officiated by Tan Peng Guan, Honorary Advisor to the Kian Kok Middle School Board of Governors. 'It is truly heartening to see everyone here today, genuinely committed to shaping their educational journeys. I hold deep respect for the tireless efforts of our local education community,' he said. Tan said education is not only the foundation of individual growth but also a driving force behind national progress. Quoting Ministry of Education statistics, he said 8,076 students were absent from the 2024 SPM examinations. 'This number is alarming. It represents not just a setback for the students themselves, but a loss to the nation's future talent pool,' he said, urging students to value their learning opportunities and pursue their dreams with courage and resilience. He added that higher education is more than just obtaining a certificate, it is a transformative journey that helps young people discover their passions, broaden their perspectives, and build meaningful networks. 'As long as you are determined and work hard, you will find your place in the world,' he assured. The fair was vibrant and well-received. Participating institutions set up booths offering detailed course information, application advice, and financial aid options. Students actively engaged with representatives, asking questions and listening attentively demonstrating their eagerness and hope for the future. Wong Liong Kiong, Head of the Guidance and Counselling Department, noted that this year's event surpassed previous editions in both scale and participation. She extended her gratitude to the national schools that joined the fair and to all participating institutions for their strong support in creating a wider platform for student development. According to the school, the core aim of the fair is to broaden students' horizons and deepen their understanding of the wide variety of education pathways available to them. Whether interested in local universities, overseas institutions, or vocational and technical training, students had the opportunity to gain firsthand insight at the event.

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, also graced the ceremony. The vessel was named Raja Muda Nala, and as a symbolic gesture, water kept in a jar and blessed with Surah Yasin recitations from nine mosques, representing Selangor's nine districts, was released onto the ship's bow. The naming and launching of a ship is a naval tradition dating back to the founding of the UK's Royal Navy, serving as an identity before a new vessel is officially commissioned into service. Also present were Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Chief of Defence Forces Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, Air Force Chief Jen Datuk Muhamad Norazlan Aris and Lumut Naval Shipyard (Lunas) chief executive officer Azhar Jumaat. He said the name symbolises the determination, courage and fighting spirit of the warrior in defending the sovereignty of Selangor. 'In this context, the valour, struggle and bravery of Raja Muda Nala are seen as highly fitting and aligned with the capabilities of the RMN's Littoral Combat Ship, which is designed to face a wide range of threats in modern warfare,' he said. He also said the procurement of littoral combat ships is part of RMN's strategic plan to enhance fleet readiness through the acquisition of high-tech, combat-capable assets with multi-mission capabilities to safeguard the country's maritime sovereignty. Adly added that LCS 2 is a symbol of national pride as it is the first frigate-class ship to be fully constructed by a local company, Lunas.

The fire, which occurred at 5.30am destroyed four teacher's rooms in the school. Fire and Rescue Department Operation Commander Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Sukur Md Ali from the Merlimau Fire and Rescue Station said no casualties were reported as the school was not in session at the time of the incident. "We received an emergency call at 5.36am and dispatched the first team to the location within two minutes," he said in a statement on Thursday. A fire broke out early Thursday morning at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dang Anum, Merlimau, in the building housing the teacher's room and administration office, causing significant damage to the structure. - Photo by Bernama Upon arriving at the scene, the team confirmed that the fire involved the teacher's rooms on the first floor of the school building. The fire spread over an area of about 80 x 60 square feet, causing 80 per cent damage to the affected rooms. Firemen used two 200-foot hoses and three water jets from fire hydrants to suppress the flames. A total of 19 firefighters from four fire stations were involved in the operation, which included teams from Merlimau, Jasin, Padang Temu and Bukit Katil. Short Circuit Suspected as Cause A suspected short circuit has been identified as the likely cause of the fire at the school. The building, which housed a teacher's room, Design and Technology (RBT) room, Moral Education room and Graphic Communication and Technical (GKT) room, had been undergoing an electrical wiring upgrade at the time of the incident. Melaka Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Zaidi Maat confirmed that initial investigations revealed no signs of foul play. However, he noted that further investigation will be carried out with the assistance of the K9 detection unit to rule out the possibility of arson. "We need to assess if there was any malicious intent, but at this point, there is no evidence to suggest that," he said. The fire department also faced challenges in battling the blaze due to low water pressure at the scene. "We had to source water from the nearby Taman Baru Merlimau because the local water pressure was insufficient. "For firefighting, the required water pressure should be at least 1.7 bar to ensure water can be pumped effectively into our vehicles. Unfortunately, the pressure that morning did not meet that standard," he said. Meanwhile, State Exco for Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Datuk Rahmad Mariman confirmed that the building had been undergoing electrical upgrades since 16 weeks ago, with completion expected in 10 weeks. He stressed that a thorough investigation will be conducted and if the fire was caused by contractor negligence, no leniency would be shown. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and authorities have vowed to take appropriate action depending on the findings. Fire and Rescue Department More Like This
