Senior Pakistani official killed in Balochistan as government blames ‘Indian-backed' militants
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Hidayatullah Buledi was shot dead by armed militants in the Sorab area as he reportedly intervened to protect civilians, including women and children, during an armed assault in a local market.
In a post on social media platform X, the province's chief minister, Sardar Sarfraz Bugti, said the attack was carried out by militants affiliated with the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group banned in Pakistan, which he said was backed by the neighboring Indian state.
'Despite holding the office of ADC Revenue, when terrorists of Fitna Al-Hind BLA opened fire on women and children in Sorab today, Hidayatullah Buledi honored the traditions of Baloch valor and sacrificed his life in defense of the Pakistani state,' he said in the post while praying for the deceased officer and his family.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also issued a statement, condemning the 'cowardly attack' on a local bank, civilians and public officials in Sorab and paying tribute to Buledi for defending his community.
'The entire nation stands with the family of Shaheed [martyr] Hidayatullah Buledi,' he said, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
'Their attack reflects a mindset that is openly hostile to Pakistan's progress and stability in Balochistan,' he added.
The prime minister also praised the efforts of the Pakistani armed forces and reiterated the government's commitment to eradicating militant violence from the country.
Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who was in Quetta during the day to address officers at the Command and Staff College, also promised to take Pakistan's war against militancy to its 'logical conclusion.'
'The nation's fight against terrorism will be driven to a logical conclusion — success against all forms and manifestations of terrorism,' the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, quoted him as saying in a statement.
Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but least developed province, has long been the site of a separatist insurgency, with militants blaming the state for exploiting the mineral resources of the region without doing much for the local population.
The government has repeatedly denied the allegation, pointing to the infrastructure and livelihood projects it has been carrying out in the area for years.
Pakistan has also frequently accused India of funding and arming militant groups, a charge New Delhi denies.

LAHORE: An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them. CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman carrying her shopping on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed. Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country. In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard. The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats. The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas. Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size.

PM Sharif discusses trade, investment and regional ties with ECO leaders on summit sidelines
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held a series of meetings with the presidents of Türkiye, Iran, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan on the sidelines of the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit in Khankendi, Azerbaijan, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to regional peace, connectivity and enhanced bilateral trade and investment. The two-day summit, held from July 3-4, focused on promoting economic cooperation, sustainable development and regional integration among ECO member states. Sharif led Pakistan's delegation, using the opportunity to deepen bilateral and multilateral ties with key regional partners. In his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and vowed to accelerate progress in critical areas. 'The two leaders reiterated their resolve to bring about meaningful progress in relations... [emphasizing] the importance of deepening cooperation in trade, defense, energy, connectivity and investment,' a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said. To advance this agenda, both sides agreed to exchange high-level delegations to finalize understandings reached between the sides. Sharif invited President Aliyev to visit Pakistan, noting that recent exchanges had significantly strengthened bilateral ties. The Azerbaijan leader had previously announced a $2 billion investment package for Pakistan during a visit to Islamabad in 2024, and the two countries have also deepened defense cooperation, including Islamabad's sale of JF-17 fighter jets to Baku. In his meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Sharif focused on regional integration, energy cooperation and the Trans-Afghan Railway Project, which is seen as vital for unlocking trade corridors between Central and South Asia. Troops Kill 30 Militants Attempting to Sneak into Pakistan from Afghanistan
Pakistani security forces killed 30 militants who attempted to enter the country from Afghanistan, the military said Friday. It said the members of the Pakistani Taliban were spotted overnight in the North Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the troops seized weapons, ammunition and explosives from the militants. The military's statement did not mention if there was a gunfight or other details of the operation. The military alleged the militants were backed by India and asked the Afghan government to prevent the use of its territory by 'foreign proxies' to attack Pakistan, The Associated Press reported. There was no immediate comment from New Delhi. Pakistani authorities often accuse India of backing outlawed groups like the Baloch Liberation Army and Pakistani Taliban who commit violence in Pakistan. Such accusations have increased since a shooting in Indian-controlled Kashmir in April heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed nations. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised security forces for the successful operation. Pakistani troops killed 54 insurgents in the same area in April. Militant violence has surged in Pakistan in recent months, much of it blamed on the Pakistani Taliban. The group is separate from the Afghan Taliban but closely allied with them. Many of its leaders and fighters have found sanctuary in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021.
