Bengaluru ranks 14 in top 20 startup ecosystems: Report
Bengaluru: Bengaluru is ranked 14th among the top 20 global ecosystems, an impressive improvement of seven positions from last year, according to the Startup Genome's Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2025.
Silicon Valley, New York City, and London secured the top three positions, followed by Tel Aviv in fourth place, with Boston and Beijing tied for fifth.
Startup Genome defines ecosystem value as the sum of valuations of funded startups, including unicorns, plus the post-money valuation of exits in the past two and a half years. Globally, the total value of exits decreased by 4%, and the number of exits decreased by 9% compared with 2023.
Across last year's top 40 ecosystems, the total count of large exits decreased by a troubling 31%—and for the aggregate of all ecosystems in our database, the decline was 40%.
In 2024, the ecosystem experienced a remarkable surge in billion-dollar exits. Food delivery giant Swiggy made its public debut with a $12 billion valuation, marking one of India's largest IPOs. Insurance innovator GoDigit followed with a $3.6 billion public listing, while digital health commercialisation firm Indegene reached a valuation of $1.3 billion.

India, the report said, secured $38 billion in total VC funding between 2020 and 2024, underscoring investor confidence in its innovation pipeline. Even amid global headwinds, Bengaluru startups raised $268 million in seed funding in 2024 alone—a 26% increase from the previous year.
Deal activity remained healthy, growing by 4% year-over-year to hit 114. This reflects a robust early-stage pipeline supported by more than 1,500 venture capital firms, more than 2,200 corporate venture investors, and a flourishing community of 17,000 angel investors.
Bengaluru now ranks 5th among the Top 50 AI cities globally, and AI & big data have emerged as the most resilient and forward-moving sector, with increases in both deal volume and funding in recent years. "Bengaluru is building a platform where corporations, researchers, startups, and policymakers can co-create the future—not just for India, but for the world. Bengaluru's next chapter will be written in deep code, hard science, and global collaboration," said Ravi Narayan, president, Middle East & South Asia, Startup Genome.

Vadnagar minted Greek coins and learnt quake resistance from W Asia
Ahmedabad: During the excavation at Vadnagar, which lasted for a decade from 2014 to 2024, one of the finds that surprised the archaeologists was 37 terracotta coin moulds. These were not of local powers; instead, they were for the coins of the Indo-Greek monarch Apollodotus II. What surprised the experts was the fact that the period it corresponded to in Vadnagar's 2,500-year-long continuous history was the 5th to 10th centuries CE, whereas the coins in their original form were minted in the 1st-2nd centuries CE. Dr Abhijit Ambekar, superintending archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), who worked on the site for the decade, said that Gujarat, being an important trade hub for the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean, has yielded a good number of silver Indo-Greek coins, identified as Drachma. "But it is a rare instance of finding moulds. Compared to original die-struck coins, the moulds indicate a cast method of minting. One theory of the find nearly three centuries after the demise of Apollodotus II is that Drachma remained a power currency in trade both through land and sea and remained in demand, prompting its production. What connected these studies was the north Gujarat town's antiquity and its interconnectedness with other parts of India and the world. Some other presentations included the continuity of the ancient town over 2,500 years, an elliptical structure found in the town reminiscent of similar structures in the Gangetic plains, and timber bonding techniques in architecture for earthquake resistance by Dr Ambekar, Ananya Chakraborty, assistant archaeologist at ASI, and others. Experts said that the common thread that connects the papers includes how the ancient town remained relevant for over two millennia. "For example, in the case of timber bonding – a technique where timber or wood is inserted at regular intervals between stones as a cushion against quakes, is seen in some parts of West Asia," said a researcher. The ancient town has yielded artefacts such as Indo-Pacific beads and shell bangles, establishing it as a production centre, along with hordes of coins, cowries, and artefacts such as torpedo jars, underlining its place as sthalpattan or land port. The presentations also focused on the town planning of Vadnagar, its different development phases from the Kshatrapa period to the British period, and how the town overcame intense periods of drought with water body interlinking and even changing diet completely for decades.

Father-son Kumbh Mela journey rewarded with special edition bike
Udupi: The 23-year-old Prajwal Shenoy, who took his father to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela on his 25-year-old Hero Honda Splendor motorcycle, was offered a Centennial Collectors-Edition bike by the company as a gift. When he failed to get train or flight tickets, Prajwal commenced his journey on the bike with his father, Rajendra Shenoy, as a pillion from Machakal in Shirva of Udupi district on Feb 6 and reached Prayagraj on Feb 10. Recognising his passion for adventures on the bike, Hero MotorCorp gifted Prajwal the Centennial Collectors-Edition bike. Vijay Kumar T Karne, managing director of Shakti Motors, Udupi, handed over the bike and safety gear to Prajwal in the presence of manager Rahul Mirajkar on Saturday. Prajwal told TOI that he received the Centennial Collectors-Edition bike as well as safety gear as gifts from the company. "They recognised my adventure of riding with my father to participate in the Maha Kumbh Mela and other trips. I covered 16 states of India on the bike earlier. Prajwal said his father readily agreed to traverse nearly 4,000km on a bike when there were no other options for travel. He recalled the spiritual moment that made him and his father happy to reach the sacred Sangam for a holy dip during the Maha Kumbh Mela, a rare spiritual gathering that occurs only once in 144 years. "We rode the bike throughout the day and rested in a tent near petrol bunks. We covered over 3,900km in nine days while riding an average of 550 to 600km per day," he said. CM: Govt settled site debate by setting up 3 nat'l law univs
Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra govt under him took the historic decision of setting up three national law universities (NLUs)—at Mumbai, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—to settle the debate over its location nearly a decade ago. He pointed out that no state in the country has such an arrangement, Fadnavis highlighted the role played by then CJI Sharad Bobde as well as CJI Bhushan Gavai, then with the Nagpur bench of Bombay HC, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and himself in chalking out a plan for bringing Maharashtra NLU to Nagpur.
