Tamil Nadu: Hasten renovation of crematorium, demand Palacode residents
Palacode town panchayat is one of the most densely populated areas in the district and is one of the fastest developing urban areas. Nearly seven years ago, the town panchayat constructed a crematorium here. However, for the past year, this crematorium has remained closed owing to poor maintenance. The residents urged the administration to take steps to renovate the crematorium.
C Arumugam of Palacode said, "A crematorium offered people an alternative to a burial ground to safely dispose of their loved ones. A funeral at the latter facility is expensive as several rituals are involved. But for the past six months, the crematorium was closed down as it is out of order. We urge the town panchayat to take steps to renovate the crematorium at the earliest."
S Kumaravel, another resident, said, "The crematorium charges about Rs 10,000 for a cremation and also allows families to perform final rites here, which is a viable choice. On an average at least three to five cremations were being done here".
Palacode town panchayat officials said, "The renovation works are being undertaken and the crematorium will function soon. A total of Rs 20 lakh have been allocated for renovation work."

Neyyattinkara to get LPG crematorium at Malanchani
T'puram: After years of persistent demand from residents, Neyyattinkara is finally set to receive its own LPG crematorium. The new facility, named Shanthiyidam, will be established at Malanchani, within municipal limits. The project, expected to be completed within two months, is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 1.80 crore. According to a senior official of Neyyattinkara municipality, the crematorium will be capable of cremating two bodies simultaneously. "The building is being constructed over a 5,000 sq ft area. The project began on Dec 11 last year on the one-acre plot acquired in the Plavila ward, with an initial budget of Rs 95 lakh. As costs exceeded the initial estimate, an additional Rs 75 lakh was allocated in the current budget to complete the project," the official said. A total of Rs 40 lakh has been earmarked for the procurement of gas cremation equipment. Municipal chairperson P K Rajmohan confirmed that the purchase process for the machinery is complete. "A special hall for final rites will be included. The foundational concrete stage has finished and structural columns are being erected. Once the roof is in place, the installation of cremation machinery will begin, after which operations can start," he said. At Shanthiyidam's entrance, a landscaped garden is also being developed. From one side of Malanchani hill, the entire town of Neyyattinkara will be visible. The work was completed using both MLA fund and from the municipality. For decades, absence of a dedicated crematorium in Neyyattinkara town forced residents to rely on facilities in neighbouring panchayats, leading to significant inconvenience.

Villagers in Vadgam raise 45L to solve their water crisis
Ahmedabad: In an inspiring display of unity and self-reliance, residents of Kanodar village in Vadgam taluka of Banaskantha district built five recharge wells and two tube wells entirely through community effort. Faced with years of water scarcity and waterlogging, around 15,000 villagers raised Rs 45 lakh over six months and completed the construction within the next six months. "We earlier sought help from various govt authorities, but no action was taken due to their lackadaisical approach," said sarpanch Dilip Salvi. "On one hand, we had issues of drinking water and depleting groundwater, and on the other, we faced waterlogging in the village. So the youth of our village decided to do something on their own, and they did." The initiative began with a door-to-door campaign led by village youth. Every household contributed according to its capacity. Local businessman and villager Yasin Banglawala recalled the motivation behind the initiative. "You can see this area has had a severe water problem for years," he said. "So much rainwater used to accumulate here that people's homes would be inundated with two feet of water. The village youth thought that instead of wasting this water, it could be used constructively by creating recharge wells." He added, "They surveyed the village and found seven or eight old, unused wells. As a pilot project, they decided to deepen two wells, hired a team and tried to recharge them." Salvi said the success of the initial recharge wells encouraged the villagers to expand the project. "We now have five recharge wells and two water tube wells. It's already helping with groundwater levels," he noted. Looking ahead, Salvi said the village committee is planning to approach local govt authorities. "We will ask them to see if the govt can reimburse the amount spent by the villagers for this public benefit."
