UAE athlete loses dream job, shot at championship title as flight disruptions continue
A UAE-based sportsman has shared how he lost a job interview and an opportunity to participate in a prestigious competition due to the airspace closures and flight cancellations in the region. The Eastern European Jiu Jitsu athlete is still awaiting a chance to fly home.
Elbek R. was supposed to fly to Azerbaijan earlier this month to attend a job interview and realise his goal of becoming a cabin crew. 'The interviews were happening in Baku, and I had booked my tickets in advance,' he told Khaleej Times. 'However, once the Iran-Israel war began, all the flights to Eastern Europe were cancelled. I hoped and prayed, but it wasn't meant to be. The airline completely refunded my ticket but I still lost the opportunity.'
Even though he was dejected at not being able to get a shot at clinching the job, Elbek said he believed it was for the best. 'It was a war and people were losing lives,' he said. 'It didn't feel right to be upset about not being able to attend a job interview. I have been wanting to be a cabin crew because it would give me the opportunity to travel the world and practice Jiu Jitsu in different countries. If God has willed for me to be a cabin crew, I will get a chance some other time.'
Starting Friday, June 13, UAE began cancelling flights to several destinations after war between Iran and Israel escalated. Most of the cancellations include flights heading to or arriving from countries like Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel.
Disappointed again
On Thursday, Elbek was planning to travel to Istanbul to attend a sport competition and booked a flight through Tashkent. However, once again, his plans were thwarted because of continuing flight cancellations despite a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
'I was planning to reach Tashkent on Thursday and then travel onwards to Istanbul to participate in the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour,' he said. 'I reached the airport only to find that the flight was cancelled. I had completed all my preparation for the competition and was feeling very good about myself but what to do. Fate had other plans for me.'
Competing in the 77kg category in the Abu Dhabi AJP East Coast tour last month, the athlete pulled off three wins before narrowly losing out on the gold in the finals.
On Monday, Iran launched an attack on the American Al Udeid military base in Qatar, forcing several Gulf countries to briefly close their airspaces and causing widespread flight cancellations. In an open letter to its passengers, Qatar Airways group chief executive Engineer Badr Mohammed Al-Meer explained how the airline handled the disruption with over 90 of its planes in the air at the time. Several UAE residents and tourists are looking for alternate ways to reach their destinations as flights continue to face disruptions.
ER said that he would wait for a while before booking a flight home. 'I am going to continue training here and concentrating on my sport,' he said. 'I know that with all that has happened, it is going to take a few weeks for the flight schedules to be fixed. So I will plan a trip back home once everything is settled.'

UAE: Travelling from Sharjah this summer? Airport reveals busiest days
Sharjah Airport announced on Saturday a significant increase in travel volume to and from the emirate during the peak summer season, with over 800,000 passengers expected to travel from July 1 to 15, 2025. It said a comprehensive plan has been prepared to provide a seamless travel experience for all passengers during the first two weeks of July. Earlier, Dubai Airports, Emirates and Etihad Airways issued advisories, asking passengers to come early and opt for online check-in due to peak summer travel. A large number of UAE residents travel during summer to their home countries and cooler climes. UAE residents have started resuming travel plans after a ceasefire to the Iran-Israel war was announced following recent geopolitical tensions in the region, including an Iranian strike on a US base in Qatar. Most UAE airlines fully resumed their scheduled operations a few hours after the Iranian attack. In its latest update on June 25, Sharjah-based Air Arabia said as regional airspace continues to open, it is gradually resuming operations on previously suspended flights. 'Sharjah Airport urges passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight to avoid any potential delays in completing travel procedures. Passengers are also advised to communicate with their airlines in advance to verify flight times and any updates,' it said on Saturday. Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) assured that it has intensified efforts around the clock with teams and customer service staff working to provide necessary support, respond to passenger inquiries, and guide them in using the airport's smart services and innovative technologies with ease.

Look: UAE President hugs kids, interacts with expats at Abu Dhabi sports event
Time after time, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan proves that he is truely the 'people's president'. Images emerging from a recent sports event held in Abu Dhabi have shed another light on this humanitarian aspect in the UAE leader's character. The photos shared on social media showed Sheikh Mohamed talking with kids, shaking their hands and hugging them in tender fatherly gestures. Take a look: In a sign of appreciation and love to Sheikh Mohamed, some children placed a kiss on the leader's forehead The children, who wore sports attire, were participating in Abu Dhabi Summer Sports (ADSS); the Middle East's largest indoor sports festival, held annually at the ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi. Designed to provide a fun, safe, and healthy escape from the summer heat, ADSS includes events for sports like football, basketball, tennis, badminton, padel, volleyball, table tennis, cricket. During his visit to encourage the athletes, Sheikh Mohamed also talked to expats and posed for photos with them. Such heartwarming encounters with the President occur occasionally. During US President's Donald Trump's recent visit to the UAE, a young Emirati girl was waiting among the crowds to welcome him. She caught the attention of Sheikh Mohamed who interacted with her. And at one point, he was seen putting an arm around her as she smiled and placing a kiss on her forehead. In October, Sheikh Mohamed personally expressed his gratitude to a group of foster mothers who have been taking care of children with all their hearts.
