Waverley to escort Cunard's newest ship down Firth of Clyde

Built in 2023, Queen Anne is the 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag. At 1,058ft in length, she carries just under 3,000 passengers and 1,225 crew.
Named after the first monarch of Great Britain, Queen Anne has already made her mark, having visited Scotland for the first time last year. This third visit to the Clyde follows her second call on Sunday, May 25.

Captain Dominic McCall, Master of Waverley, said: 'To sail Waverley alongside Queen Anne will be a very special moment. Two ships, generations apart, each representing a different era of shipping history. It's a proud occasion for everyone involved and a rare spectacle for those watching on board with us. There is no better way to experience this moment than from the decks of Waverley.'
Waverley has previously escorted several famous liners, including the world-renowned Queen Elizabeth 2, herself built in Clydebank. Now, Queen Anne will join that proud tradition. Seeing Queen Anne from the decks of Waverley will be a spectacular sight and one not to be missed.
Passengers can step aboard at Dunoon, departing at 4.45pm and returning at 8.30pm, or Greenock, departing at 5.30pm and returning at 9.15pm.
Passengers who join Waverley from Largs, departing 12 noon and returning 7:30pm that day, will enjoy the Queen Anne escort as an added highlight to their afternoon cruise of Loch Long and Loch Goil.
Waverley (Image: Supplied) The special sailing comes as Waverley starts her 2025 summer season on Glasgow and the Clyde Coast from Friday 27th June to Monday 25th August.
This year's programme is especially significant as Waverley celebrates 50 years of sailing in preservation. Over the next eight weeks, Waverley will offer a wide variety of cruises, welcoming passengers aboard at 18 ports around the Clyde coast including Glasgow, Greenock, Largs, Dunoon, Ayr, Brodick, Rothesay and Millport.
Tickets for all sailings can be booked in advance at waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by calling the booking office on 0141 243 2224.
Tickets can also be purchased on board Waverley.

Waverley paddle steamer set for 50th anniversary Ayrshire summer excursions

The paddle steamer Waverley is set to return to the Ayrshire coast for a series of summer cruises. The world's only seagoing paddle steamer is ready to set sail on the Firth of Clyde 50 years after it was preserved. Gifted to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society in 1974, the paddle steamer Waverley will be offering its traditional variety of cruises from Ayr Harbour this summer. ‌ Beginning on Monday, July 7, the summer programme will see excursions to Arran, Ailsa Craig, Rothesay, Tighnabruaich, Millport, Campbeltown and Loch Fyne among other destinations. ‌ Sailings from Ardrossan, Ayr, Girvan, Largs and Troon are all on the cards and tickets are available now. A special offer has been laid on for the first voyage of the summer where seniors can bring a friend for free on the sailing from Ayr to Brodick on Monday, July 7. The cruise from Ayr up to the Kyles of Bute and Loch Fyne the following day will have a similar offer. For the whole summer, kids sail for just £1. Paul Semple, general manager, said: 'I am delighted to announce that Waverley is returning to Ayr and with an exciting schedule of sailings in the coming weeks. 'Over the past three seasons we have seen the popularity of Ayr sailings soar with many selling out in advance. The ever-popular trip round Ailsa Craig remains a favourite for many given only Waverley can offer such a cruise from Ayr. ‌ 'To help launch Ayr cruises we have a special offer where Seniors can bring a friend free on Monday, July 7 sailing to Brodick, or join for the full cruise on Tuesday, July 8 when Waverley sails through the stunning Kyles of Bute and up Loch Fyne. 'Kids go for the price of Waverley by sailing for just £1 on all cruises.' ‌ Captain McCall added: 'Only on Waverley can passengers experience so much of the stunning Clyde coastline in such a unique and nostalgic way. 'Once aboard passengers can savour the sight and sound of a real steamship — hear the telegraph ring, visit the Engine Room, watch the engine in motion, and see the paddles turning through the portholes. 'I look forward to bringing Waverley back to Ayr and seeing so many step aboard to enjoy all the ship has to offer.' ‌ Built for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1946, the Waverley was operational on the Craigendorran to Lochgoilhead and Arrochar route for almost 30 years before its preservation in 1975. Since then, the Waverley has been a regular sight on the Ayrshire coastline. Tickets for all sailings from Ayr, Girvan, Troon and Largs can be booked in advance at or by calling 0141 243 2224. Tickets can also be purchased on board Waverley subject to availability.

It's full-steam ahead as cruise industry thrives amid bumper demand for tours around the British Isles

Demand for cruises is booming as holidaymakers take to the high seas in ever-increasing numbers. Over-50s specialist Saga cheered a 'strong start' to the year for its cruise business while also revealing it is close to launching new savings products in a tie-up with NatWest. Saga shares surged 2.3 per cent, or 4p, to 175.6p yesterday. Shares in FTSE 250 rival Carnival – which owns P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruises – soared 11.8 per cent after it hiked its annual profit forecast thanks to bumper demand. The twin updates suggest demand for cruises remains strong despite geopolitical tensions and economic concerns around the world. Saga said its ocean and river cruise division has proved popular so far this year. Profit ahoy: Over-50s specialist Saga cheered a 'strong start' to the year for its cruise business while rival Carnival has hiked its annual profit forecast thanks to bumper demand Its load factor – how well it fills its cruises – is up year-on-year at 95pc for ocean trips and 93 per cent for river cruises. Saga's two flagship vessels, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, run cruises around the British Isles, the Mediterranean, the Nordics and the Caribbean, with prices ranging from £1,300 to £15,000. This summer, tours around the British Isles have been a particular sweet spot, and cruises to the Canary Islands are increasingly popular. The business has been so inundated with holiday goers wanting to stick closer to home that it is considering doing more trips around the UK and Ireland in 2026 and 2027. Saga also said it is close to signing a deal to start launching savings products with NatWest. The partnership would see Saga launch a range of personal banking products. A Saga spokesman said a savings offering would be the first product to launch under the partnership.

The members had a good time and were enthralled to see the amazing temple and the Shrine Room Eleven members of Twynholm SWI met up at the village hall on June 18 for their visit to the Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Buddhist Centre at Eskdalemuir. As is normal on these trips, the first stop was at the Tearoom where a lovely cuppa and piece of cake was enjoyed. ‌ The centre was established in 1967 and held their golden anniversary in 2017. The Temple itself is amazing, so colourful and peaceful. With its great golden Buddha and splendid decor, the Shrine Room is a sight to be seen. ‌ The gardens and grounds are so peaceful and there is an array of meaningful monuments. After the visit it was back home for a most enjoyable meal at The Galloway Arms in Crocketford, where the group were met by others who couldn't make the trip. The waitresses very kindly judged the competition. Keyring – 1 Margaret Miller; 2 Linda Griffiths; 3 Helen McCormick; 4 Jill McCall; 5 Rosie Gillespie. Jean gave The Galloway Arms a very hearty vote of thanks and said it was lovely that secretary Anne and her daughter were able to join the group for the meal. Anne was thanked for organising the day and Rosemary for filling in where needed. Jean went on to thank the drivers for the transportation.
