Karnataka Professor Allegedly Urges Female Students To Wear Hijab On Field Trip, Probe Underway
Abdul Majid, an assistant professor in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Central University of Karnataka in Kalaburagi, is undergoing an internal inquiry due to allegations that he insisted female students wear a hijab during a university field trip. The incident, involving around 20 female students, occurred on June 19 during an educational tour focusing on Muslim heritage sites.
University registrar RR Biradar confirmed to News18 that a formal complaint was received on July 26. The Hyderabad-based Legal Rights Protection Forum submitted the complaint to the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Battu Satyanarayana. Students reported that Professor Majid urged them to wear a hijab before entering certain locations, including a mosque. No student has come forward publicly or privately, reportedly fearing retaliation, but the university has promptly initiated an investigation.
Biradar stated, 'An inquiry committee has been formed and the investigation is underway at the moment," adding that 'action will be taken if the professor is found guilty, although the extent of the action is undetermined." This is the first such incident at the university. As of now, Professor Abdul Majid has not provided any statement, reasoning, or justification regarding the alleged insistence.
The university's internal committee will continue its investigation, and subsequent actions will be based on the findings.

New Delhi: A look out circular (LOC) has been issued against Reliance Group chairman and managing director Anil Ambani , close on the heels of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning the businessman for questioning on August 5 in connection with an alleged Rs 17,000 crore loan fraud case. ET was the first to report on Friday that the ED had summoned Ambani for questioning in connection with its investigation into the alleged loan fraud case. In a related development, ED Friday carried out searches against Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd. Biswal Tradelink is an Odisha-based company that allegedly ran a 'fake' bank guarantee issuance racket for business groups, including providing an alleged Rs 68 crore assurance for a Reliance Group company, said people in the know. They said Reliance Nu Bess Ltd allegedly submitted a fake bank guarantee of Rs 68.2 crore to Solar Energy Corp of India (SECI). 'They apparently used related party Biswal Tradelink for this arrangement. The purpose was a tender for setting up a 1,000 MW/2,000 MWh standalone battery energy system in India issued by the SECI,' said one of the persons, who did not wish to be identified. According to people in the know, ED is likely to apprehend one of the directors of Biswal Tradelink soon, making its first arrest in the case. The ED has alleged that the founder directors of Biswal Tradelink were previously directors of the Reliance Group. It has further alleged that a forged bank guarantee along with a forged endorsement letter of State Bank of India (SBI) was submitted to SECI. 'The ED is in possession of the alleged forged email. Instead of 'sbi', the email address had 's-bi'. The SBI email ID given was sbi.17313@ the person said. According to the ED, a first information report (FIR) had been registered by the Delhi Police at the behest of Reliance Nu Bess against Biswal Tradelink. In its complaint, according to the ED, Reliance Nu Bess alleged that SECI floated a tender for which bank guarantee was required. If the bank guarantee were to be furnished by any foreign branch of a bank, it had to be confirmed by the Indian branch or SBI through a secure messaging platform, akin to SWIFT. As per the ED, Reliance Nu Bess further alleged in its complaint, 'M/s Biswal Tradelink contacted Reliance NUBESS limited and offered to provide bank guarantee for a fee. Subsequently, SECI found that the bank guarantee was fabricated as also the confirmation from SBI.' The ED has alleged that Reliance Nu Bess wrongly claimed that it was cheated. 'Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties (Reliance Nu Bess and Biswal Tradelink) acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance group,' a senior official told ET. A statement issued by Reliance Group on Friday said, 'The company and its subsidiaries acted bonafidely and have been a victim of fraud, forgery and cheating conspiracy. The company has made due disclosure on this to the stock exchanges on November 7, 2024.' It further said that 'a criminal complaint in this regard has already been lodged with the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police against the third party on October 16, 2024' and that the 'due process of law will follow'. The alleged money laundering case being investigated by the ED stems from a November 2024 FIR of the Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing.

Silent protest held in Belagavi demanding release of arrested Kerala nuns
Belagavi: Hundreds of Christians gathered in Belagavi on Friday evening to stage a silent protest rally, demanding the immediate release of two Kerala-based Catholic nuns and a tribal youth, who were recently arrested in Chhattisgarh under controversial circumstances. Organised by the Catholic Association of Belgaum and other Christian organisations, the rally was led by Bishop Rev Dr Derek Fernandes. Around 400 participants, including priests, nuns, seminarians, and laypersons, assembled at the DC Compound at 4.40pm. The peaceful march concluded at the zilla panchayat CEO's office, where a memorandum addressed to the president of India, the prime minister, and the chief minister of Karnataka was submitted to deputy commissioner Mohammed Roshan. The memorandum highlighted the wrongful arrest of the nuns and the youth at Durg Railway Station on July 25 under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 4 of the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act (1968), which pertains to religious conversion through force or inducement. It is alleged that the charges were politically and communally motivated. Investigations and family statements later confirmed that the women travelled willingly and without any coercion. Speaking at the rally, Bishop Derek Fernandes condemned the arrests as 'unjust and frivolous,' asserting that Catholics are not involved in forced conversions. He also decried the physical assault on the nuns and warned against the rise of communal violence. "We demand the immediate release of the innocent and an end to baseless persecution. The govt must protect minority rights and uphold India's secular values," Bishop Fernandes stated. Pakistan-linked arms rackets busted in Amritsar, 9 arrested
Amritsar: In coordinated operations targeting Pakistan-linked cross-border arms trafficking, Punjab Police on Friday announced the arrest of nine individuals — including a juvenile — and the seizure of 13 sophisticated pistols in a major crackdown on smuggling modules. Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the counter-intelligence (CI) team in Amritsar had dismantled a Pakistan-backed network, arresting five operatives and recovering six pistols — four 9mm Glock handguns and two .30-bore pistols — along with magazines and ammunition. The arrested individuals were Jagroop Singh of Dhun, Navdeep Singh of Patti Lahian Di, Gurlal Singh of Rajoke, and Joban Singh of Patti Mana Ki — all from Tarn Taran district — along with Arshdeep Singh of Shaliwal in Amritsar district. Police believe they were acting on instructions from a Pakistan-based smuggler known as Rana, tasked with delivering arms to criminal gangs in Punjab to destabilise the sensitive border region. In a separate but parallel development, Amritsar police commissionerate uncovered two more smuggling modules, arresting four more suspects, including a 17-year-old, and seizing seven pistols. Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the weapons haul included two Glock pistols, four .30-bore Star pistols, one .32-bore pistol, six live cartridges, and a motorcycle used for consignment delivery. Those arrested in the commissionerate operation were Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of Bhagwanpura in Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh 'Babbal' (43) of Antaryami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and the unnamed juvenile from Tarn Taran. Preliminary investigations revealed that some suspects lived near the international border and retrieved drone-dropped weapons from designated coordinates. Bhullar said the weapons were linked to gang rivalries and intended to spark unrest. Two of the suspects, Pradeep and Jarnail, were associates of the late gangster Ravneet Singh 'Sonu Mota', who had rivalries with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang. "The weapons recovered were supplied by Pakistan-based handlers and handed over to the accused prior to Sonu Mota's death," Bhullar said, adding that the timely seizure had likely prevented a major criminal incident.
