Gregory John Couch, doctor accused of possessing over 5000 child abuse files, no longer employed at hospital
Gregory John Couch, 37, was arrested after detectives executed a search warrant at an Albury home, on the NSW-Victorian border, at 6am on Tuesday.
Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) on Wednesday confirmed the married doctor is no longer working at the service.
'AWH is aware of media reporting yesterday afternoon that a doctor recently engaged by our service as a locum orthopaedic registrar, through a third-party medical workforce agency, has been charged by police with offences involving child abuse material,' the statement read.
'The individual is no longer working at AWH.
'We understand the seriousness of the charges and the matter is now before the courts.'
The service said there is no indication at this stage that any alleged misconduct occurred at AWH facilities or involved its patients or staff.
Couch passed all standard background checks before starting work, including Working with Children and police checks.
'These requirements were also reviewed and confirmed by AWH prior to his commencement,' the statement added.
AWH said it takes the responsibility of safeguarding vulnerable people seriously.
'We want to reassure the community that AWH remains steadfast in its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our patients, families, and staff.'
Police will allege Australia Border Force officers seized Couch's phone at Melbourne Airport in May this year.
His phone was then referred to the State Crime Command's Sex Crime Squad, where detectives allegedly located thousands of files — both videos and photos — of child abuse material.
Footage shows Strike Force detectives escorting Couch — dressed in track pants, a jacket and ugg boots — out of a home and into the back of a police vehicle.
He was then taken to Albury Police Station, where he was charged with possess child abuse material, use carriage etc to access child abuse material, and intentionally import prohibited tier two goods.
Police will not allege Couch offended against any of his patients.
According to social media, Couch previously worked at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney before moving to the Gold Coast earlier this year.
Photos posted online show him posing alongside his wife after the couple married in early 2021.
7NEWS.com.au can reveal Couch's late twin brother, Andrew, who passed away in his sleep in May 2017, was also a doctor.
A photo posted online shows Couch, dressed in a mortarboard and graduation gown, accepting his brother's posthumously awarded Master of Medicine (Critical Care) from the University of Sydney later that year, as his parents and sister beamed beside him.
University of Sydney and the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) have since made memorial awards in Andrew's honour.
Couch appeared in Albury Local Court on Tuesday, where he was refused bail.
He is next due to appear in court on August 19.

Mark Latham lashes media ‘galahs and fools' as accusations grow
Mark Latham has dismissed claims he breached confidentiality over a medical report on Sydney MP Alex Greenwich in a wild radio spray during which he blasted members of the media as a 'pack of galahs and fools'. The former Labor and one-time NSW One Nation leader has faced a week of controversy, including allegations he abused his former partner, Nathalie Matthews, and sent her sexual messages from the parliament chamber. Mr Latham has strenuously denied Ms Matthews' allegations, which are untested and contained in an application for an apprehended violence order (AVO) filed in court this week, and has not been charged with any offence. Speaking during his weekly slot with Brent Bultitude on Radio 2SM, Mr Latham said he 'couldn't say much' about the case, which is before the courts, but instead used his half-hour slot to lash out at negative reporting. Mr Latham accused journalists from The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of being the 'biggest pack of galahs and fools' who had a 'manic determination to engage in the politics of personal destruction against me'. The former Sky News presenter's criticism of the SMH focused on an opinion piece published on Thursday that described Mr Latham as a 'cockroach' and alleged he shared a confidential psychologist's report. The article alleged Mr Latham used parliamentary privilege to share the confidential medical information about Sydney MP Alex Greenwich that was presented to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT). Mr Greenwich began proceedings in the tribunal alleging homosexual vilification and workplace sexual harassment after the Federal Court found that Mr Latham had defamed Ms Greenwich in a series of tweets. Mr Latham told Bultitude that he ascertained the 'nature' of the medical material by googling the name of the treating clinician after they were mentioned during NCAT proceedings and in affidavits to the Federal Court and NCAT. He went on to call NSW upper house leader Penny Sharpe to withdraw a motion over the matter and claimed he had 'never received notification of any complaint' from the parliamentary ethics committee over his behaviour. Mr Latham also bizarrely claimed to have received a phone call from SMH editor Bevan Shields on the day of the 2025 federal election but told Bultitude that he was unsure if it was Shields and could not call the number. 'When the fella saying he's Bevan Shields, the editor (of The Sydney Morning Herald) rings me up on federal election day, if indeed that was him … Bevan, come out and out yourself,' Mr Latham went on to tell Bultitude. Bultitude defended his relationship with Mr Latham during the program on Friday afternoon and described criticism of Mr Latham by Premier Chris Minns as 'payback' for his opposition to the Rosehill Racecourse sale. He said he had received 'abuse for still having him on'. Latham was re-elected to the upper house in 2023. He had previously served in the NSW parliament from 2019 with One Nation before being sacked from the party by Pauline Hanson in 2023. Before that, Mr Latham took the Labor party to defeat in the 2004 federal election. Mr Latham is further alleged to have filmed sexual acts within his office in parliament, covertly photographed female colleagues, and not disclosed tens of thousands of dollars given to him by his ex, Ms Matthews.

Men scared to accuse ‘powerful' MP Gareth Ward of sexual assault: court
A jury who have sat through the lengthy criminal trial of Kiama MP Gareth Ward have been invited to convict the 'powerful' politician on allegations he sexually abused two young men. Mr Ward, a NSW independent MP, was charged in March 2022 with three counts of assault with act of indecency, an alternative charge of common assault against an 18-year-old man at Meroo Meadow in 2013, and intercourse without consent against a 24-year-old man in Potts Point in 2015. Since his arrest three years ago, the 43-year-old has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all counts. In Darlinghurst District Court on Friday, Crown prosecutor Monika Knowles continued her closing submissions and told the jury the two men had explained 'a number of reasons' as to why they did not complain about the allegations straight away. Both men gave evidence that the accused was a 'powerful' person and they were scared about what would happen if they came forward. The first complainant, a man who was 24 at the time of the alleged assault, said he took some time to come forward with the allegations as he was 'scared for his job', Ms Knowles reminded the jury. He did, however, allegedly mention to another parliamentary staffer words to the effect that then premier Gladys Berejiklian had selected a 'rapist', Mr Ward, as the minister for children in her cabinet in 2019. Meanwhile, the second complainant, a man who had just turned 18 at the time of the alleged assault, 'wrestled with going to police' because Mr Ward was 'a well-connected person', Ms Knowles told the court. 'There was an apprehension about going to police or media and it was because the accused was a powerful person … the accused was in a powerful role locally,' Ms Knowles said. Ms Knowles told the jury that either the second complainant was assaulted at Mr Ward's Potts Point apartment or he is 'the best guesser of all time'. She said if the alleged assault didn't happen, then the man had 'randomly but correctly guessed' details about Mr Ward's Potts Point apartment, including the building number, the view from the balcony and the specific bedroom he slept in. 'The Crown says he didn't guess any of these things, he knew them because they happened,' she said. 'After taking everything into account you would be satisfied of the charges beyond reasonable doubt. 'It's by no sheer chance or coincidence … I invite you to convict.' Mr Ward allegedly assaulted the man who had just turned 18 at his South Coast home in February 2013. It is also alleged the MP sexually assaulted the man who was 24 years old at the time at Mr Ward's Potts Point apartment in September 2015. Beginning his political career in 2011, Mr Ward was a councillor on the Shoalhaven Council before becoming the Liberal member for Kiama in 2011, a seat he has held since. The trial before a 13-person jury continues.

Tech billionaire Richard White dragged into Mark Latham scandal
Tech billionaire Richard White has been dragged into the ugly split between Mark Latham and ex-lover Nathalie May Matthews with a subpoena demanding both she and the Sydney businessman hand over any 'communications' that exist between them. Mr Latham's lawyer Zali Burrows, who also acts for former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann, has lodged a subpoena for 'communications' between the WiseTech co-founder and Ms Matthews in response to her domestic abuse allegations against the NSW independent MP. Ms Matthews has also been served with a subpoena for her communications with Mr White. Mr White is not accused of any wrongdoing. Mr Latham has emphatically denied his ex-girlfriend's abuse allegations, which include a claim he once defecated on her before sex, as 'comically false and ridiculous.' does not suggest these allegations are true, only that they have been made against a serving NSW MP and a court will hear the application later this month. Mr White and Mr Latham and Ms Matthews have been contacted for comment. 'Invoices' for G-strings In a separate development, fresh claims have emerged that Mr Latham borrowed tens of thousands of dollars from Ms Matthews before complaining after the couple broke up and she requested the return of personal items that 'you bought those things when you lived in the house rent free.' There is no suggestion that Mr Latham did not return the money before the demise of the relationship. He has not been charged with any offence. In his only broadcast interview on the matter Mr Latham said that he was guilty of nothing more than being 'human' and 'male.' 'The big news is I had a private life. I had a sex life and I've got to say it was fantastic,'' Mr Latham said of the relationship. But the NSW MP has dismissed as an elaborate 'in-joke' other invoices he sent her that included references to G-strings and used the acronym for LETS ROOT. In Ms Matthew's AVO application she alleges Mr Latham borrowed $20,000 from her 'on four occasions without prompt repayment.' In one transaction Ms Matthews transferred $20,000 to Mr Latham on October 11 last year and it's also understood Ms Matthews also covered at least $15,000 worth of hotels and restaurants for the couple. The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that that one email sent by Mr Latham in November 2023 to Ms Matthews titled: 'Latham Emergency Timely Storage Rental of Opportunists' Things', which serves as an acronym for 'LETS ROOT.' 'For: Services, Storage, Squatting, March-November 2023, itemised as follows…' the email from Mr Latham reads. '42 nights accommodation for Nathalie Matthews (naked), 29 mornings breakfast-inner and other personal services… @$50 per night = $2,100. 'Three months storage of: two large computer screens, keyboards and cords, 11 dresses, one 'It's a Latham Thing' sloppy joe, 6 boxes of shoes (non-shiny), 9 G-strings, assorted lingerie… assorted smalls and toiletries = $2,900' his email read. Mr Latham said there had to be payment 'within 21 days', otherwise stored materials would be 'thrown in the dam… or impounded permanently.' In September 2024 Ms Matthews wrote twice to Mr Latham requesting amounts totalling $9,000 be returned. But Mr Latham said on X on Friday that is was all an elaborate joke. 'Tele really have bottomed out with story today about Nathalie Matthews/Darrough/Abdullah/Bondi/Amber finances,'' he wrote. 'They are all of her aliases listed on this in-joke Invoice which, by the way, is numbered F*K0069.' 'Open relationship' claim Mr Latham has told The Daily Telegraph the couple were always in an 'open' sexual relationship and that she was having sex with other people during the entire two-year relationship that he has described a 'situationship.' 'It was never a monogamous relationship,'' Mr Latham said. Ms Matthews told friends last year that Mr Latham had proposed marriage and that the couple lived together in a de facto relationship. 'Pig' attack Mr Latham was slammed as a 'pig' earlier this week after revelations he photographed female MPs at work and joked about having 'a threesome' with NSW Greens MP Abigail Boyd. In one Instagram message sent to his former partner, Mr Latham shared a photo of Ms Boyd in the parliamentary chamber, taken without her knowledge. He then shared a photo of Liberal MP Susan Carter taken from behind showing her full body and bottom, saying 'then it gets worse .... Grandma'. The disparaging comments, which were included in a trove of leaked text exchanges with his ex-lover, were condemned by colleagues on Thursday. 'Mark Latham is a pig,' Housing Minister Rose Jackson said at a press conference. She noted his previous attacks on campaigner Rosie Batty whose son was murdered in a domestic violence incident by his own father. 'This man has attacked Rosie Batty, telling her to grieve in private. This man is well known on the record, multiple times as a bigot – one of the biggest bigots in the state,' she said. 'It's extremely confronting for me to think that in a workplace there's someone who thinks it's acceptable to take photos of you and to share them with derogatory comments.' Mr Latham has not denied the text messages but insisted they were playful banter with his ex-partner. He has denied abusing Ms Matthews in any way, insisting all of their interactions were entirely consensual. She has lodged a legal application for an order to prohibit Mr Latham from contacting her claiming a sustained pattern of abuse and coercive control. 'Pinched her bum' In another leaked text exchange, Mr Latham wrote that Liberal MP Eleni Petinos 'looked pregnant' and then claimed to have 'pinched her bum lightly'. But Ms Petinos told the Daily Telegraph that the incident never happened, and was 'an absolute fantasy'. 'That is not in the realms of possibility,' she said. 'Mark's attitude towards his colleagues is disgraceful - instead of showing respect he chooses to objectify and degrade. 'It's just grossly inappropriate - we don't walk around to be objectified everyday.' Mr Latham insisted that his message about pinching the bottom of Ms Petinos was an 'in-joke'. 'Freak off' claims Meanwhile, a Queensland sex worker claimed that Mr Latham and his then-girlfriend contacted her and even met with her at a ritzy event at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse. Carly Electric said she suspected she was contacted because the couple wanted to hire her for a threesome. In a message sent by Mr Latham to his now ex-girlfriend, he said Ms Electric was 'good rooter' and joked if she might want to be involved in a 'freak off' – the now infamous term used by Sean 'Diddy' Combs to describe threesomes where one person looks on. 'It was just implied … who comes to a sex worker and behaves this way?' Ms Electric said of the interactions. Mr Latham dismissed the discussions of freak offs as 'a prank joke.' 'Just as the Tele today ran cherry-picked messages between me and Nathalie Matthews, with no context, missing in-jokes and pranks, they are at it again,'' he said. 'Often enough between consenting adults there are 10-20 messages leading up to a prank joke. Haha.'
