Sri Lanka Supreme Court Stops Land Grab From War-Affected Tamils

NDTV2 days ago

Sri Lanka's top court halted Friday a government move to acquire land in northern regions still reeling from the consequences 16 years after the end of a decades-long civil war.
Sri Lanka's north bore the brunt of the conflict in the 37-year-long Tamil separatist war, which was brought to a bloody conclusion in May 2009.
Many among the Tamil minority lost their land title deeds during the years of displacement, and the area was also hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami.
The Supreme Court order concerning nearly 6,000 acres (2,428 hectares) of land came a day after UN human rights chief Volker Turk ended a three-day visit, during which he urged the authorities to return private lands still occupied by troops.
The UN estimates that at least 100,000 people died in the war, and that 40,000 of them from the Tamil minority were killed by troops in the final months of the conflict.
Turk also asked Sri Lanka to investigate allegations of war crimes and punish the perpetrators.
Successive Sri Lankan governments have refused internationally-backed investigations, and there has been no credible local accountability mechanism.
Former Tamil legislator M.A. Sumanthiran, who petitioned the court, said it has stopped a land grab.
"The government promised three months ago not to go ahead with acquiring these private lands, but never took any action," Sumanthiran told AFP. "That is why I went to court."
Sumanthiran said security forces in the northern Jaffna peninsula still occupied about 3,000 acres.

‘Don't know if we will wake up': Israel launches fresh new attacks in Gaza; claims 23 lives

AP file photo In a fresh new offensive, Israeli airstrikes and gunfire have claimed the lives of 23 people, including children, in the war-battered territory of Gaza on Sunday, as per Gaza's civil defence agency, reported AFP. Mahmud Bassal, the civil defence spokesman, told AFP that his services "transported 23 martyrs, including several children and women" who were killed in various locations around the besieged territory. The Israeli military told AFP it couldn't comment on the reported incidents but said its ongoing campaign aims to "dismantle Hamas military capabilities" following the group's October 2023 attack on Israel. Bassal informed that two children were killed in an air strike in their home, which was completely destroyed, in the Zeitun neighbourhood of Gaza City early on Sunday morning. A family member, Abdel Rahman Azzam, 45, told AFP that he had heard 'huge explosions' coming from his relative's house, when he 'rushed out in panic and saw the house destroyed and on fire," he said. "We evacuated more than 20 injured people, including two martyrs, two children from the family. The screams of children and women were non-stop," Azzam said. A drone strike on a tent sheltering displaced people had killed five people, including a child near the southern city of Khan Yunis, said Bassal. Four more people lost their lives in an Israeli gunfire in Rafah, also located in the south. In the Northern town of Jabalia, Ahmed Arar, 60, said that his home was completely destroyed after they had recieved a warning from a person identifying himself as an Israeli army officer. "About half an hour later, they bombed the house, and it was completely destroyed," he told AFP by telephone. Israeli offensive has claimed the lives of at least 56,500 Gazans, most of whom are civilians in the war-battered territory according to the area's health ministry. Around 1,219 people, mostly civilians have also lost their lives in Israel. Israeli authorities have informed that they would refocus on its campaign against Gaza, that it launched in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 attack, after the 12-day war with Iran that ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday.

Gaza rescuers say Israeli forces kill 23, including children

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes and gunfire killed 23 people in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory on Sunday (June 29, 2025), including at least three children. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said that his services "transported 23 martyrs, including several children and women" killed in various locations around the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military said it was not able to comment on the reported incidents but said it was fighting "to dismantle Hamas military capabilities" in a campaign launched to root out the Islamist militant group after its October 2023 attack on Israel. Mr. Bassal said two children were killed in an air strike on their home in Gaza City's Zeitun neighbourhood in the early morning, adding "the house was completely destroyed". A family member, Abdel Rahman Azzam, 45, said he was at home when he "heard a huge explosion at my relative's house". "I rushed out in panic and saw the house destroyed and on fire," he added. "We evacuated more than 20 injured people, including two martyrs — two children from the family. The screams of children and women were non-stop," Azzam said. "They bombed the house with a missile without any prior warning. This is a horrific crime. We sleep without knowing if we will wake up." Elsewhere, Mr. Bassal said a drone strike on a tent housing displaced people near the southern city of Khan Yunis killed five people, including a child, while four more people were killed by Israeli gunfire in Rafah, also in the south. Restrictions on media in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by rescuers. Israeli soldier killed The Israeli military said in a statement on Sunday that a 20-year-old soldier was killed "during combat in the northern Gaza Strip". The military had issued an evacuation order earlier in the day for parts of Gaza City and nearby areas in the territory's north. The military "will operate with intense force in these areas, and these military operations will intensify and expand... to destroy the capabilities of the terrorist organisations", military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a statement on X. He told residents to "evacuate immediately" to the Al-Mawasi area on the southern coast. The civil defence agency later said an Israeli air strike hit a house in Gaza City, killing three people. AFP video footage filmed from southern Israel showed large plumes of smoke rising from northern Gaza. House destroyed A resident in the northern town of Jabalia, Ahmed Arar, 60, said his family's house was destroyed after they received a warning it would be bombed from a person identifying himself as an Israeli army officer. "About half an hour later, they bombed the house, and it was completely destroyed," he told AFP by telephone. He said the family had already evacuated the house several days ago due to repeated shelling and air strikes. Israel launched its campaign in Gaza in response to Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 56,500 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The United Nations considers these figures to be reliable. After claiming victory in a 12-day war against Iran that ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday, the Israeli military said it would refocus on its offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian militants still hold Israeli hostages.

Rape of minority community woman in Bangladesh sparks outrage, main suspect arrested

The alleged rape of a woman belonging to a minority community three days ago in central Bangladesh's Cumilla district sparked nationwide outrage on Sunday after a video of the assault went viral. Police personnel stand guard at barricades across a road as protesters march through the streets of Dhaka. (File photo/AFP) The main suspect of the alleged rape has been arrested along with several others, police said. Cumilla district's police chief Nazir Ahmed Khan said the main accused was arrested in a predawn raid at Dhaka's Sayedabad area and four others were apprehended for revealing the picture and identity of the woman on social media. Students of Dhaka University staged marches in the campus condemning the rape while residents of its Jagannath Hall dormitory, dedicated for minority community students, took out processions calling for justice. Secretary General of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded exemplary punitive action against the culprits. The High Court, meanwhile, issued a directive asking authorities to immediately remove the video of the assault that went viral on social media on Saturday. The two-judge bench also asked the authorities concerned to ensure security of the rape survivor and provide her necessary treatment. Some media reports suggested the police action came only after the video went viral. According to a report, people in the neighbourhood initially released the culprit after a mass beating and took him to a hospital instead of handing him over to police. The suspect allegedly fled from the hospital. The reports suggested the woman was visiting her paternal home at Culimma's Muradnagar sub-district where the accused allegedly broke into the house at night. Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, who has served as his mother's advisor, took to X to express his outrage at the incident. He blamed the Yunus administration for a rise in incidents of mob attacks, terrorism and rape in the last 11 months. Bangladesh witnessed incidents of violence against members of minority communities following the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government in August last year. Hasina fled to India when her regime was toppled on August 5 last year, as a fallout of a violent street movement led by a platform called Students against Discrimination. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, 85, took charge of the interim government three days later.
