The family of Kuljit Singh of Fatehgarh Viran village in Chamkaur Sahib claimed that he died of a drug overdose, leading the police to arrest four people. A total of 126 grams of narcotic powder was seized from one of them, according to cops.
Kuljit left home around 4 pm on Tuesday to buy clothes from Chamkaur Sahib and did not return, according to family members. His body was found the next morning in the driver's seat of a Maruti Swift.
Family members claimed that the accused, whom he knew, gave him an overdose of drugs.
"I have now come to know what 'chitta' (heroin) is after I lost my son. A woman recently released by the police is still selling heroin in our area. The smugglers openly told me they have no fear of the police," said Arjan Singh, the father of the soldier.

A court sent Harpreet Singh and Neeraj Kumar to police custody for two days and the other two to judicial custody.
Kuljit, who joined the Army in 2017, was posted as sepoy in Kota, Rajasthan. According to police, Kuljit's wife serves in the Punjab Police and is posted in Jalandhar. The couple has a nine-month-old son.
On Wednesday, former Punjab CM and Chamkaur Sahib ex-MLA Charanjit Singh Channi visited the family of the deceased to offer condolences. He said that the govt had made significant claims about countering drugs but has failed to curb their use. Channi said the soldier died due to an alleged administering of drug overdose and accused the police of attempting to suppress the matter by attributing the death to another poisonous substance.

The Delhi Police Special Cell Wednesday arrested a member of the banned Khalistani group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) who is wanted in illegal arms trafficking in the national capital and police station grenade attack cases in Punjab. The accused has been identified as Akash Deep, in his early 20s. He was allegedly involved in the grenade attack at the Lal Singh Qila police station in Punjab's Batala in April, the police said, adding that he has been interrogated. The police said Deep is suspected of having helped the accused who threw a grenade near the police station on the intervening night of April 6 and 7. The Punjab Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosives Act. A day after the blast, BKI claimed in a social media post that the attack was carried out in retaliation for the Pilibhit encounter in December 2024 in which three people allegedly linked to another grenade attack on the Bakshiwala police station in Gurdaspur were killed by a joint team of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab Police. In December last year, the Punjab Police, along with the Uttar Pradesh Police, shot dead three alleged Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) operatives identified as Gurvinder Singh, 25, Virendra Singh alias Ravi, 23, and Jasan Preet Singh alias Pratap Singh, 18, all residents of Gurdaspur. They were reportedly involved in grenade attacks on another police outpost in Punjab in November. The police claimed to have seized two AK-47 assault rifles, two Glock pistols, and a significant quantity of ammunition from their possession. Later, during the investigation, the UP Police said the accused had come to Pilibhit under the instructions of the wanted BKI operative Kulbeer Singh alias Sidhu.

Trans-border arms trafficking module busted in Punjab; eight weapons seized
Chandigarh: Punjab Police, in two operations in Amritsar, including a joint operation with the Border Security Force (BSF), seized eight illegal weapons from four accused involved in trans-border arms trafficking, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday. The pistols comprised five.30 calibre and three 9 mm calibre along with magazines have been seized from their possession. He said the first information reports (FIRs) have been registered at the police station in Gharinda in Amritsar. Further investigation is underway to expose the entire network and its linkages. Meanwhile, in a significant anti-smuggling operation, BSF Punjab Frontier, jointly with Punjab Police, on Tuesday apprehended two Indian narco-smugglers in Ferozepur along with two bikes and a weighing machine. Simultaneously, two DJI Mavic 3 Classic drones carrying heroin 571 grams and 564 grams, respectively, were seized from the Fazilka and Amritsar border. One drone was neutralised mid-air by BSF's technical surveillance. Glow sticks were attached to the narcotics packets to facilitate easy retrieval by the smugglers. These swift, intelligence-led operations highlight BSF's sincere commitment to securing the Punjab border and combating narco-terrorism by neutralising Pakistani drone intrusions. Earlier, in a major crackdown, the BSF, in joint operation with police's Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Amritsar, apprehended two criminals, a father-son duo, from Tarn Taran and seized two pistols, one without upper slide, three magazines and two mobile phones from their possession. In a follow-up action, based on disclosure from a previously nabbed smuggler, BSF and Ferozepur Police recovered 391 grams of heroin hidden near a canal in Pojoke village. "These swift and precise actions reaffirm the unwavering commitment of security forces to foil narco-terror plots and protect Punjab from the menace of drugs and crime," said the border guarding force. The BSF, responsible for safeguarding the 553-km-long varied, tough, and challenging India-Pakistan border in Punjab, is guarding borders round the clock with unflinching dedication after braving innumerable challenges, including inclement weather conditions and a spate of smuggling.
