Inflation in Oman edges up to 0.82%

MUSCAT: Oman's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.82 per cent in June 2025 compared to June 2024, based on the 2018 base year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The highest price increases were recorded in the personal goods and miscellaneous services group (up 7.45 per cent), transportation (up 3.12 per cent), and restaurants and hotels (up 1.39 per cent). The health group increased by 0.76 per cent, clothing and footwear by 0.6 per cent and education by 0.07 per cent.
Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose marginally by 0.02 per cent.
However, food and non-alcoholic beverages dropped by 0.59 per cent, furniture and household equipment fell by 0.25 per cent, culture and entertainment dipped 0.02 per cent, and tobacco declined by 0.01 per cent. Communication prices remained unchanged.
Within food categories, prices of sugar, jam, honey and sweets rose 3.31 per cent, dairy products increased 1.84 per cent, oils and fats climbed 1.65 per cent, and meat and cereals rose slightly.
However, vegetable prices fell by 8.06 per cent, seafood by 3.84 per cent, fruit by 0.45 per cent and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.19 per cent.
Among the governorates, Al Dakhiliyah recorded the highest inflation at 1.76 per cent, followed by Al Dhahirah (1.57 per cent), Al Sharqiyah South (1.4 per cent), Musandam (1.34 per cent) and Al Wusta (1.22 per cent). The lowest inflation was in Al Batinah South (0.1 per cent), while Al Sharqiyah North saw a slight decrease of 0.01 per cent. — ONA

His Majesty the Sultan welcomed the United Kingdom's intention to recognise the State of Palestine and reiterated Oman's firm support for all efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy and the two-state solution. PM Starmer praised Oman's constructive role under His Majesty the Sultan's leadership in promoting dialogue and peace, and contributing to regional and international security and stability. The meeting was attended from the Omani side by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister; Dr Hamad bin Said al Aufi, Head of Private Office; and Badr bin Mohammed al Mandhari, Ambassador of Oman to the United Kingdom. Representing the UK were Jonathan Powell, National Security Adviser, and Dr Lianne Saunders, British Ambassador to Oman.

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism organised a workshop titled "Artificial Intelligence in Tourism Promotion". The workshop formed part of the ministry's efforts to enhance the efficiency of the tourism sector and empower it to keep pace with global technological developments. It was attended by marketing and sales staff from hotels, travel companies, as well as tour operators. The workshop aimed to enable tourism sector partners to use AI technologies in improving promotional performance and promoting the competitiveness of tourist destinations in the Sultanate of Oman. The approach focused on introducing practical AI applications for the development of promotional content, the analysis of sentiments and predictive targeting. The workshop also included presentations about successful regional and international models on the use of AI in this field, with the aim of upgrading the efficiency of workers in the tourism sector and enabling them to adopt global practices in tourism promotion. The overall objective is to enhance the Sultanate of Oman's position as a prominent tourist destination. A training programme associated with the workshop focused on the ethical use of artificial intelligence tools and the analysis of tourism data to be used in conducting promotional and marketing campaigns that align with the objectives of Omani tourism brands. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism will announce the launch of a sustainability training programme via the Partner Support Platform, which seeks to build the capacity of tourism sector workers and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve a balance between tourism growth and the preservation of natural and cultural resources. The workshop was one of the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry to develop the tourism sector's potential and ensure its readiness to deal with future needs in a manner that serves the goals of Oman Vision 2040. — ONA

Oman's trade surplus falls 38% to RO2.4bn in first 5 months of 2025

Muscat – Oman's trade balance recorded a surplus of RO2.454bn by the end of May 2025. This represents a sharp 38.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, when the surplus stood at RO3.989bn. Preliminary statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) indicated a 9.6% decline in the total value of commodity exports, which fell to RO9.639bn by the end of May 2025, down from RO10.659bn during the corresponding period in 2024. The decrease is primarily attributed to a 15.2% drop in oil and gas exports, which totalled RO6.315bn by the end of May 2025, compared to RO7.444bn in the same period of 2024. In contrast, non-oil commodity exports saw a notable 7.2% increase, reaching RO2.701bn, up from RO2.521bn during the same period in 2024. However, re-exports from Oman recorded a 10.3% decline, amounting to RO623mn by the end of May 2025, compared to RO695mn in the corresponding period of 2024. The data also revealed a 7.7% rise in the total value of commodity imports into Oman, which reached RO7.185bn by the end of May 2025, up from RO6.670bn in the same period of 2024. The United Arab Emirates topped the list of destinations for Oman's non-oil exports by the end of May 2025, with exports totalling RO485mn – a 22.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The UAE also remained the leading destination for Omani re-exports, valued at RO248mn, and was the top source of imports into Oman, with goods worth RO1.651bn. Saudi Arabia ranked second for non-oil exports, receiving goods worth RO451mn, followed by India at RO280mn. In terms of re-exports, Iran came second with RO109mn, followed by Saudi Arabia with RO45mn. As for countries exporting to Oman, Kuwait ranked second with exports valued at RO731mn, followed by the People's Republic of China at RO698mn.
