Wales sees surge in food bank use as celebrities urge UK Government to act

171,673 emergency parcels distributed across Wales last year
A GROWING number of Welsh families are relying on food banks, with new figures showing that nearly 172,000 emergency food parcels were distributed across Wales between April 2024 and March 2025.
The data, released today (Friday, May 23) by anti-poverty charity The Trussell Trust, shows the scale of food poverty in the UK – with 2.9 million parcels handed out nationally. Over one million of those were for children.
In Wales, food parcel distribution has increased by 26% since 2019/20, a sign that for many communities, hunger is becoming normalised.
The figures have sparked renewed calls for government action, with well-known faces including Dame Julie Walters and Lesley Manville urging ministers to address what they describe as a national emergency.
Dame Julie said: 'Emergency food distribution is being normalised in the UK. These stats highlight the need for us to come together and play our part in saying this isn't right.'
In Pembrokeshire and across rural Wales, campaigners warn that the situation is worsened by isolation, limited services, and higher energy bills – all pushing vulnerable people to crisis point.
Actor Lesley Manville, who recently won an Olivier Award, said: 'I'm shocked at the extremely high levels of emergency food parcels being distributed by food banks, especially the sharp rise in children under five needing support. This has to be a wake-up call for the UK government.'
In Wales, more than 187,000 parcels were distributed the previous year – a drop in 2024/25, but still far above pre-pandemic levels. Trussell Trust chief executive Emma Revie said this cannot be seen as a success: 'Thousands of families, disabled people, and working households had to access food banks. This should be a massive wake-up call.'
Comedian Rosie Jones said that proposed UK Government cuts to disability benefits could make matters worse: 'Slashing the income of someone already struggling to cover life's essentials is cruel and counterproductive.'
In Pembrokeshire, food banks such as PATCH in Milford Haven and the Trussell-linked outlets in Haverfordwest and Fishguard have seen sustained high demand. Volunteers warn that without local donations and support, they would struggle to meet needs.
TV presenter and Trussell ambassador AJ Odudu added: 'Right now, someone needs an emergency food parcel every 11 seconds. It's never been more vital that we all play our part.'
The charity is calling for an urgent re-think on proposed welfare cuts and for the UK Government to take decisive action to reduce hunger and hardship.
Campaigners are also urging the public to donate food or money to their local food bank. A postcode search tool showing how many parcels were distributed in each area is available at: campaign.trussell.org.uk/parcels-by-postcode

MS brings experts together in a bid to combat illiteracy in Wales

Natasha Asghar, who serves as shadow cabinet secretary for education, launched the 'Alternative Literacy Panel' after an investigation found cueing was still being used in Welsh schools, despite being stopped in England more than 20 years ago. Cueing sees children taught to read by guessing words from pictures or the context of a sentence. The panel has proposed a series of improvements and strategic direction, which will help shape the Welsh Conservative manifesto for next year's Senedd election. Sir Nick Gibb, a former UK minister of state for schools who is on the panel, said: "The Welsh Government should be listening to Natasha Asghar's Alternative Literacy Panel in advocating systematic synthetic phonics in the teaching of reading in Welsh schools. 'As the UK schools minister for 10 years, we legislated to require systematic synthetic phonics in schools in England, and we introduced the phonics screening check to be sure that children had been taught to decode words and to ensure no child slipped through the net with their reading difficulties unidentified. 'As a consequence of our reforms, England is now fourth in the world in the reading ability of our nine and 10-year-olds according to the PIRLS international survey.' Ms Asghar said: 'I am incredibly grateful to all of the experts who have joined my Alternative Literacy Panel and provided robust solutions to the reading crisis currently facing Wales. 'Low literacy can seriously hamper an individual's future learning and job prospects, hit their confidence, and we know illiteracy is significantly correlated with crime. 'I am determined to improve outcomes for our young people and this panel is a first important step in bringing about meaningful change.'

Vision for future outlined by Welsh Language Commissioner

Efa Gruffudd Jones spoke at the Wrecsam National Eisteddfod today (Monday, August 4) and shared her plans for the next five years. Her recently published strategic plan focuses on children and young people, health and care, and the workplace as priority areas for action. Ms Jones said: "I have stated on several occasions that my ambition as Commissioner goes beyond a narrow interpretation of what is expected of me by the Welsh Language Measure, and I am keen to lead an organisation that does more and contributes more significantly to wider language planning work. "What has been outlined in our strategic plan and manifesto clearly shows the direction we want to take and our ambition in terms of the language." The commissioner presented her vision during a panel event in the Cymdeithasau pavilion. Deio Owen, president of the National Union of Students Cymru, welcomed the focus on younger generations. Mr Owen said: "It is disappointing to see statistics that are constantly published showing a decline in the number of Welsh speakers. "But that doesn't equate to using the language consistently. "I welcome the commissioner's intentions to prioritise children and young people and also the workplaces as young people have access to Welsh throughout their school days." The panel included representatives from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, the National Union of Students Cymru, and Wrexham University.

Poll reveals concerns over swimming in sea around Wales

A poll commissioned by the Liberal Democrats found that 44 per cent of people said they would never swim in the sea during the summer, a six per cent increase in just two years. Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd candidate for Ceredigion Penfro, Sandra Jervis, said: "This coastline crisis threatens to wreck Welsh summers, with people afraid of swimming in the sea due to rampant sewage dumping. "These polluting firms have been let off the hook at every turn, and it is our local environments and people's summer holidays that are suffering the consequences. "In communities like mine, the sewage crisis poses a serious risk not only to wildlife and human health, but also to our thriving tourism industry. "Both the UK and Welsh governments have failed to get to grips with this crisis, and the public expect more than a job half done." The poll also revealed that nearly three in 10 regular sea swimmers (29 per cent) said they would now avoid the water altogether because of sewage dumping. This figure has risen from 23 per cent in 2023, when the same poll was conducted for the Liberal Democrats.
