Singapore PM Wong reminds PAP MPs to ‘remain beyond reproach', warn of risks from those using dinners and hampers to curry favour
CNA reported that In the eight-page letter, Wong reminded MPs to exercise discernment when dealing with the public, noting that while many people are genuine, some may have ulterior motives.
'A few will seek to cultivate you to obtain benefits for themselves or their companies, to gain respectability by association with you, or to get you to influence ministries and statutory boards to make decisions in their favour,' Wong reportedly wrote.
'Gift hampers on festive occasions, dinners and entertainment, concert tickets and personal favours big and small are just some of the countless social lubricants which such people use to ingratiate themselves to MPs and make you obligated to them,' he added.
In the letter, traditionally sent after each general election, Wong stressed that MPs must remain beyond reproach, both in behaviour and in public perception, and avoid any suggestion of impropriety or undue influence.
Wong also advised MPs to generally decline invitations to officiate business openings or similar events, but said they should seek prior approval from party whip Dr Janil Puthucheary if they decide to attend.
The reminder follows recent scrutiny over private dinners involving ministers Chee Hong Tat and Ong Ye Kung and convicted money launderer Su Haijin, whose photos at the gatherings were widely circulated online.
The ministers later said via their press secretaries that they did not know Su, one of 10 individuals convicted in a major money laundering case last year.
The letter also comes in the wake of the conviction of former transport minister S Iswaran, who in October 2024 was sentenced to 12 months' jail for accepting valuables from individuals linked to his official duties.
Iswaran admitted to receiving gifts from Singapore GP's Ong Beng Seng and construction executive Lum Kok Seng, and to obstructing justice by repaying the cost of a flight only after being investigated.

Ex-Changi inmate from Singapore's maximum security prison documentary faces new charges over passport, stun guns
SINGAPORE, July 25 — Graceson Ang, a former inmate featured in a documentary on Changi Prison, was charged in court yesterday with new offences. The Singaporean, 40, — who appeared in CNA's Inside Maximum Security — faces three charges, including leaving the island republic without presenting a passport and making a false passport application, according to a report published in Singapore-based online news and lifestyle platform Asia One. The prosecutor said Singapore Customs and the Central Narcotics Bureau are still investigating and need two more weeks to complete their probe, Asia One reported quoting CNA. Ang's lawyer informed the court that he planned to meet his client the following day, on Friday (July 25). He is also accused of importing mini LED flashlight stun guns via a parcel on March 7, 2023, while under a remission order from November 2022 to June 2025. He allegedly failed to present his passport at Woodlands Checkpoint in March 2023 and later falsely claimed he had lost it when reapplying. Ang was charged last month with all three offences. The case has been adjourned to allow authorities to complete investigations. If convicted of leaving without presenting a passport, he faces up to 10 years in jail, a fine of up to S$10,000 (RM33,070), or both. Making a false passport statement carries the same maximum penalties. Importing stun guns as a first-time offender may result in up to two years' jail, a fine of up to S$100,000 or three times the goods' value, or both. Repeat offenders may face up to three years' jail, a fine of up to S$200,000 or four times the value, or both. Ang appeared in CNA's Inside Maximum Security, which aired in January 2022, highlighting his struggles with family and rehabilitation.

AYS: Takeover of CosmoSteel now unconditional
PETALING JAYA: AYS Ventures Bhd has announced that the voluntary takeover offer by its associate company, 3HA Capital Pte Ltd, for all shares in Singapore-listed CosmoSteel Holdings Ltd has become unconditional. This follows 3HA Capital crossing the 50% shareholding threshold, the steel solutions provider said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. 'As of July 23, 2025, the offer has received valid acceptances in respect of nearly 229 million shares, representing approximately 87.88% of the total number of voting rights in the company.' If the offeror receives valid acceptances for at least 90% of the total voting rights, it will have the right to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares from shareholders who did not accept the offer, at the final offer price, added AYS. 3HA Capital said it does not intend to revise the final offer price. AYS' wholly-owned subsidiary, Ann Yak Siong (Singapore) Pte Ltd, holds a 14.9% stake in 3HA Capital.
