At least nine injured after huge gas explosion in Rome
The blast, which occurred shortly after 8am local time, could be heard across the Italian capital, with flames and black smoke visible from several districts.

Among the injured were eight police officers and one firefighter, all of whom had rushed to the scene to assist following an initial alert. Authorities said the officers suffered burns in a series of secondary explosions but none are believed to be in a life-threatening condition.
'There were a few chain explosions after the first one,' said Elisabetta Accardo, a spokesperson for the Roman police. 'All the policemen injured suffered burns, but they are not in danger of life.'
Luca Cari, a spokesperson for Italy's fire service, confirmed one firefighter had also sustained injuries but said the condition was not serious. Ten fire crews were deployed to tackle the blaze and secure the site.
The explosion ripped through the service station and prompted fears that people may be trapped or injured in neighbouring buildings. Emergency services continued to search the area into the morning.
There has been no immediate confirmation on the cause of the explosion. An investigation is now under way.

An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them. CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman carrying her shopping on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed. A police report quoted the father as saying the lion then turned to his five-year-old and seven-year-old children, and clawed their arms and faces. All three were taken to hospital but were not in a critical condition. The owners who ran out of the house were "amused to see their lion attack" the passersby, the father added in the report. Police said Friday that they had arrested three men. "The suspects fled from the spot, taking the lion with them. They were arrested within 12 hours of the incident," the office of the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore told AFP. The lion, an 11-month-old male, has been confiscated by police and sent to a wildlife park. Officials at the facility said that the animal appears to be in good health. Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country. In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard. The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats. The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas. Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size. Big cats are imported and bred across Pakistan, seen as symbols of wealth and power to the elite that own them. Last year, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which rules the government, banned supporters from bringing lions — the symbol of the party — to political rallies. In late December, Pakistani YouTube star Rajab Butt was gifted a lion cub on his wedding day, and authorities quickly took notice when they saw video of the animal on social media. The next month, Butt managed to avoid jail after promising a judge to upload animal rights videos for a year. The attack in Pakistan comes one month after a lion killed a businessman at a luxury lodge in the remote northwest of Namibia. In April, a lion killed a 14-year-old girl outside Kenya's capital in a ranch to the south of Nairobi National Park.

Ex-Janus Henderson analyst jailed in UK for six years for insider dealing
LONDON (Reuters) -A former Janus Henderson analyst was sentenced to six years in prison on Friday for using confidential information on companies, including Daimler, Jet2 and THG to make nearly 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) following a London court trial. Redinel Korfuzi, 38, used information he accessed through his job as a research analyst at the asset manager to place bets alongside his sister Oerta Korfuzi, 36. The siblings pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit insider dealing and money laundering between January 2019 and March 2021, but were convicted last month after a trial at Southwark Crown Court. Judge Alexander Milne sentenced Redinel Korfuzi to six years in jail and Oerta Korfuzi, who had an investment and finance qualification, to five years, saying the pair were "intelligent and financially aware individuals" whose actions were a "betrayal of trust". Janus Henderson, which manages roughly $380 billion in assets, was not involved in the criminal case or accused of any wrongdoing. A spokesperson said when the Korfuzis were convicted: "The protection of confidential information is extremely important to Janus Henderson and the firm treats any actual or suspected misuse of confidential information with the utmost seriousness." Prosecutor Tom Forster told jurors at the start of the trial in February that Redinel and Oerta Korfuzi used lockdown restrictions imposed from March 2020 to carry out the conspiracy from the London flat they shared. Forster added that the defendants made a profit of around 963,000 pounds in relation to 11 companies' shares in just over six months.
