Draft experts offer fresh predictions for Walter Clayton Jr. based on new intel
The biggest question for the Gator Nation has been where its star guard, Walter Clayton Jr,. will land this summer. It is a foregone conclusion that he will be among the first 30 players selected in the draft, but by whom?
ESPN's draft experts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo published their final mock draft based on recent trades and new intel, and have Clayton going to the New Orleans Pelicans with the 23rd pick via the Indiana Pacers.
"Clayton has showcased his dynamic shotmaking in workouts and worked his way up boards in a first round that has shaped up somewhat light on point guard options. He has fans in front offices selecting higher than this, with scenarios in play in which he lands in the top 20. His explosiveness and ability to create his own shot are strong calling cards that should give him a pathway to being a useful bench scorer, at worst," Woo begins.
"Minnesota, Miami and Atlanta are considered potential suitors. If Clayton becomes available here, he would be a potential plug-and-play option for a team that could use additional backcourt shooting," he continues.
"The Pelicans have been highly active under Joe Dumars thus far, trading CJ McCollum and Kelly Olynyk to the Wizards on Tuesday in a deal that brought back Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the No. 40 pick in this draft. They acquired this pick from Indiana last week, sending the Pacers' 2026 first-rounder back to them to move back into the draft. That decision to trade with the Pacers raised the question among rival teams as to whether the Pelicans would dangle this pick to try to move up from No. 7, but New Orleans is thought to have genuine interest in several players in this range."
The 6-foot-2-inch, 199-pound senior guard amassed 18.3 points, 4.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game last season, while posting a 44.8% mark from the floor overall, 38.6% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the charity stripe.
Clayton's teammate, fellow guard Alijah Martin, is projected to be selected with the 52nd pick acquired from the Denver Nuggets in the second round by the Phoenix Suns.

NFL Hall of Fame preseason game rivals NBA playoffs with shocking viewership nationwide
It appears sports fans are ready for the new NFL season after shocking viewership for the Hall of Fame preseason game this past week. In fact, it rivaled the NBA playoffs. The Hall of Fame Game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions drew 6.9 million viewers on NBC, which was up a whopping 40% from last year, Front Office Sports reported, citing Nielsen ratings. It was the most-watched Hall of Fame Game since 2021. During the 2025 NBA postseason, average viewership across ABC and ESPN was 6.13 million per game, which was up 10% from last year, according to the league, showcasing just how popular the NFL is – even when the games don't count. Trey Lance, not Chargers' starter Justin Herbert, was the one taking snaps with the offense in Canton, Ohio last Thursday night, and he put on a show for all those watching. The third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft went 12-of-20 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns thrown in the Chargers' 34-7 beatdown of the Lions. Lance is expected to hold the backup position to Herbert in a season where head coach Jim Harbaugh is likely to build off a 2024 playoff campaign. Meanwhile, head coach Dan Campbell and the Lions didn't have the same production as the scoreboard indicated. As is custom, Jared Goff and many starters on both sides of the ball didn't suit up for this contest, so Kyle Allen, who is battling to be Goff's backup, started under center. He was picked off twice in the game, while other mistakes, including a muffed punt return, are areas the Lions need to clean up. There are many more preseason games to be played in the coming weeks, as every other team across the NFL will suit up for their first game action against another team this week. Perhaps even more NFL fans will be tuning in for those primetime games, as they prepare for what's expected to be another exciting football season.

Celtics reportedly trade Georges Niang to Jazz, sign free-agent forward Chris Boucher
Georges Niang's happy homecoming with the Boston Celtics did not last long. The forward has reportedly been traded to the Utah Jazz, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. With that move, the Celtics opened up a roster spot and some financial space to add free-agent forward Chris Boucher, also according to Charnia. Just another busy day for Celtics president of basketball ops. Brad Stevens as he navigates his way through an interesting offseason of change in Boston. Niang -- who was born in Lawrence and grew up in Methuen -- was acquired by the Celtics from the Hawks in late June in a salary dump that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta. The Celtics also received a future second-round pick in the move, which shed Porzingis' $30 million salary off the Boston books. Now Niang is a salary cap casualty himself, as he's reportedly been traded to the Jazz along with a pair of future second-round picks for rookie RJ Luis Jr., according to Charania. Niang played four seasons in Utah earlier in his career. He was set to make $8.2 million in 2025, but the Celtics erased that from the books to help the franchise get further until the NBA's second tax apron. Boston recently waived G League MVP JD Davison to get back until the second apron, so dealing away Niang gave Stevens a little more flexibility to navigate the books. With Jayson Tatum expected to miss most -- if not all -- of the 2025 season after rupturing his Achilles in the playoffs, the Celtics have made it a point to reset the books to avoid future roster-building penalties and a massive tax bill. The Niang trade could mean Boston hangs on to Sam Hauser or Anferenee Simons for the upcoming season. The Celtics acquired Luis Jr. for Niang, who signed a two-way contract with the Jazz and likely spend his rookie season with the G League Maine Celtics. Luis Jr. went undrafted out of St. John's, where he played two seasons after he started his college career at UMass. The 6-foot-7 guard averaged 14.1 points off 43.9 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds per game over his three collegiate seasons. The roster spot -- and some of the savings -- created by the Niang trade didn't last long, as Boston reportedly signed Boucher shortly after the swap. The 32-year-old Boucher spent seven of his eight NBA seasons in Toronto, and won a championship with the Raptors in 2019. He is Toronto's all-time franchise leader in points, rebounds, blocks, and minutes off the bench. Across 50 games last season, Boucher averaged 10.0 points off 49.2 percent shooting along with 4.5 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game. With Tuesday's two transactions, the Celtics are about $7.8 million under the second apron and have one open roster spot.
