'I'm here to serve': DPM Gan celebrates victory with PAP team in Punggol, Singapore News

AsiaOne04-05-2025
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong celebrated the People's Action Party's (PAP) win in Punggol GRC and reassured residents of his readiness to serve as their new MP on Sunday (May 4) afternoon.
DPM Gan and the four-member PAP team for Punggol GRC — featuring Dr Janil Puthucheary, Sun Xueling and Yeo Wan Ling — made their rounds at Waterway Point, thanking residents for their unwavering support during the general election on Saturday.
During the walkabout, DPM Gan and the Punggol team received words of congratulations and took pictures with excited residents, who called him the "Taskforce man".
"I think the key message is really that I'm here to serve. I'll be looking forward to talking to them," he told AsiaOne, adding that he will be organising various sessions, from dialogue sessions to round table discussions, to engage with Northshore residents and understand their concerns.
He was also candid about the uncertainty looming ahead, considering an "unstable" global situation.
"We also want to better understand (residents') concerns and their worries, and see how we can help them address some of the concerns so that they can move forward with confidence," he added.
He also fielded a question regarding progress on the Economic Resilience Taskforce that he is leading to mitigate the impact of the US tariffs that were imposed on April 2.
Speaking to AsiaOne, Gan said that he has shared his initial thoughts on proposed measures with the rest of the taskforce members, which include Minister for National Development Desmond Lee and Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo.
"The taskforce members are now going through and understanding the proposals," he said, adding that he will share details once they are finetuned.
Last night, the PAP's Punggol GRC team emerged victorious after a close race against the Worker's Party (WP), who fielded new faces Harpreet Singh, Jackson Au, Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar and Alexis Dang.
Gan's team received 55.17 per cent of votes, while the WP team trailed closely behind with 44.83 per cent of votes.

'If you don't buy, others will': Woman lists NDP tickets for $25 each, Singapore News

The National Day Parade (NDP) organising committee has warned of scams involving the unauthorised sale of NDP 2025 tickets. This comes after listings surfaced online offering "official" tickets for as much as $25 each. One such listing, posted on Facebook on Sunday (July 20) and since removed, advertised tickets for the NDP at the Padang on Aug 9. The seller claimed she had successfully secured four tickets through a Safra ballot earlier this month. "Sure can enter. If you don't buy now, others will," she told an AsiaOne reporter posing as a potential buyer. But checks by AsiaOne found that Safra did not organise any balloting of NDP tickets for the Padang show. Instead, its ticket balloting was for NDP celebrations on Aug 2 and 9 at Bayfront Event Space, which organisers previously said is part of an "expanded canvas" to mark Singapore's 60th year of independence. Other sites which are part of the celebrations in the Marina Bay area include The Promontory, The Meadow at Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage and the Singapore Sports Hub. AsiaOne has contacted Safra for comment. The NDP executive committee clarified that there is no official sale or reselling of tickets. "If you see tickets being sold online, it's likely a scam," the committee said on Sunday via its official NDPeeps accounts on Facebook and Instagram. It also advised the public not to respond to such listings by sharing their personal details and making any payments. In a reply on the AskGov platform, the committee reiterated that tickets obtained through unauthorised channels will be rendered void. This means that those holding to such tickets will be denied entry. Ticket applications to the parade have closed. Successful applicants should have been notified between June 20 and 25 via SMS and email. [[nid:719925]] chingshijie@

'Can we have a date?': 'Task force man' Gan Kim Yong invites Punggol North residents to dinner, Singapore News

Do you live in Punggol and are looking to meet new people? Well, we have just the right candidate for you, albeit an unexpected one. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and MP for Punggol North (Punggol GRC) recently posted an invitation on his Instagram on July 10 which read: "Can we have a date?" The 66-year-old wrote: "I would like to get to know more about residents in Punggol North. So I thought of inviting you and your family to join me for dinner." He also said that he hopes to do so one family at a time so he can "really really" get to know the residents. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gan Kim Yong (@gankimyong) As there are a total of nine precincts, the first session, which is on July 19, will be for residents of Parc Terraces. The venue will be at either Leong Ji Kitchen (non-halal) from 6.30pm to 8pm, or at House of White Bee Hoon (halal). Those keen on joining DPM Gan for a meal will need to register themselves for the event by scanning a QR code on the Instagram post. This dinner is the first of a nine-part series of Can We Have A Date - where a randomly selected family of four from Punggol North will get a chance to dine with DPM Mr Gan, according to a Facebook post by the Punggol Parc Terraces Residents Network. In the comments, some netizens expressed interest in the initiation, including some non-Punggol residents. One said they hoped this initiative would extend to other parts of Punggol and Singapore. Another who lives in Pasir Ris asked if she could still register for the event despite not staying in Punggol North. "We are neighbours," she rationalised. 'Task Force Man' During the recent General Elections, DPM Gan and his PAP team won the freshly minted Punggol GRC with 55.17 per cent of the votes over a Workers' Party team. The four-member team for Punggol GRC also includes Dr Janil Puthucheary, Sun Xueling and Yeo Wan Ling. Punggol GRC was created after the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee recommended carving out the Punggol estates in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, to merge with Punggol West SMC in their March report. DPM Gan was given the nickname Task Force Man during the General Elections after Prime Minister Lawrence Wong spoke highly of him chairing Singapore's task force. DPM Gan is reportedly planning a US visit to discuss tariffs, business opportunities for Singapore in July. [[nid:718005]] melissateo@
