Silver Industrial Demand Reached a Record 680.5 Moz in 2024
Overall, global silver demand exceeded silver supply for the fourth consecutive year, resulting in a structural market deficit of 148.9 Moz in 2024. Notably, during 2021-2024, the combined deficit reached 678 Moz, equivalent to 10 months of global mine supply in 2024.
These and other key aspects of the 2024 silver market are examined in the World Silver Survey 2025, released today by the Silver Institute. The 88-page Survey also provides an outlook for the silver market in 2025. The Survey was researched and produced for the Silver Institute by Metals Focus, the London-based independent, precious metals consultancy.
Key findings include:
Silver Demand
Total silver demand fell by 3 percent to 1.16 billion ounces (Boz) in 2024. The decline was primarily driven by weakness in physical investment and slightly lower silverware and photographic demand. The drop was partially offset by the continued strength of industrial demand, which enjoyed another record year. In keeping with 2023, growth was underpinned by record electronics & electrical demand. This reflected structural gains in the green economy flowing through from the PV and automotive sectors and grid infrastructure development. Demand also received a boost from AI-related applications. While thrifting and substitution remained limited across most sectors, notable advancements within the PV segment led to a sharp reduction in silver loadings.
On a regional breakdown, China accounted for the largest share of industrial gains, with a 7 percent rise, while India recorded a 4 percent increase. In contrast, Europe saw weaker demand across most countries in the region (except for one-off gains in the UK), while US demand declined by 6 percent in 2024.
Demand for brazing alloys rose by 3 percent, supported by growth in key industries, such as automotive and aerospace. Meanwhile, demand in the 'other industrial' category rose by 4 percent, despite a slight drop in ethylene oxide (EO) demand.
Silver jewelry fabrication grew by 3 percent to 208.7 Moz. India accounted for the bulk of these gains, thanks to such factors as the import duty cut, a healthy rural economy, and the ongoing rise in purities. Improving exports to key Western countries also lifted fabrication in Thailand by 13 percent. Western consumption was broadly steady as positives, such as branded silver's gains, balanced negatives including cost-of-living issues. By contrast, China saw a third consecutive year of losses amid a challenging economic backdrop.
Silverware demand declined by 2 percent to a three-year low of 54.2 Moz. The drop was driven by softer demand in India, where elevated prices weighed on the gifting segment.
Coin and net bar demand fell 22 percent in 2024 to a five-year low of 190.9 Moz, led by double-digit declines across all major Western markets. The steepest drop was seen in the US (-46%), due to profit-taking at higher prices, market saturation, and investors' reaction to Trump's election. In Germany, the lingering effects of the 2023 VAT hike on certain silver products continued to weigh on demand. In contrast, India stood out with a 21 percent surge, thanks to bullish price expectations and the import duty cut.
Silver Supply
Global silver mine production rose by 0.9 percent to 819.7 Moz, underpinned by increased output from lead/zinc mines in Australia and the recovery of supply from Mexico, as Newmont's Peñasquito mine returned to full production. This was supplemented by additional growth from Bolivia and the US. Lower output from Chile, down 8.8 Moz y/y, partially offset this growth.
Silver production from lead/zinc mines remained the dominant source of silver, but output was flat y/y. In contrast, silver production from gold mines recorded the strongest growth, up 12% y/y to 13.9 Moz, a three-year high.
Last year, Mexico remained the leading silver mine-producing country, followed by China, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile.
Recycling rose 6 percent in 2024, reaching a 12-year high of 193.9 Moz. Industrial scrap saw the most significant increase in weight terms, mainly led by the processing of spent EO catalysts. In percentage terms, the highest gain came from silverware recycling, which climbed by 11 percent as firmer silver prices and cost-of-living issues encouraged selling in Western markets.
Outlook for Silver in 2025
Total demand this year is forecast to fall marginally to 1.15 Boz. Following a series of all-time records in recent years, industrial fabrication will remain flat in 2025, as the gains in silver's use in PV offtake ease. Both jewelry and silverware are expected to weaken, but a modest recovery in coin and bar demand in some Western markets should largely mitigate losses.
Total silver supply is projected to increase by 1.5 percent, led by higher mine production. As a result, the silver market is anticipated to remain in a deficit, but this gap will be a four-year low of 117.6 Moz.
As outlined in World Silver Survey 2025, the impact of US tariffs will be a key risk to silver demand this year. An extended period of elevated tariffs, or a further escalation of global trade wars, could lead to significant supply chain disruptions and sharply lower global GDP growth. These will weigh on industrial, jewelry, and silverware demand, though physical investment could benefit from rising safe-haven purchases.
Silver Price
The average silver price jumped by 21 percent in 2024. The start of 2025 saw further gains, with silver exceeding $34 by mid-March amid rising uncertainties surrounding US trade and foreign policy. Thereafter, the silver price has weakened, following the US tariff announcements. Even so, as of April 7, the silver price was still up four percent for this year-to-date.

Brixton Metals Starts Drilling at the Catalyst Copper-Gold Porphyry Target with a Second Drill
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Brixton Metals Corporation (TSX-V: BBB, OTCQB: BBBXF) (the 'Company' or 'Brixton') is pleased to announce that it has begun drilling at the newly identified Catalyst Copper-Gold Porphyry Target at its wholly owned Thorn Project located in NW British Columbia, Canada. The Thorn Project is an underexplored copper-gold porphyry district with several large-scale exploration target areas identified. Drilling is ongoing at its Trapper Gold Target and a second drill is now operational at the Catalyst Target. Highlights A 2 km by up to 1 km copper-in-soil anomaly has been confirmed and refined, supported by soil geochemistry showing a classic calc-alkalic porphyry zonation: from a central Cu-Mo zone with depleted Zn, outward to Cu-Te-Se, and further to distal As-Sb anomalies. IP geophysical survey results reveal strong shallow conductivity and intense chargeability features at depth, closely aligning with expected porphyry-style alteration zones. Initial drilling will test depths to 500 meters, focusing on the copper-in-soil anomaly, gold-copper in surface rock samples, mapped surface phyllic and chlorite alteration zones, with chargeability signatures suggesting potential copper-gold porphyry mineralization. Chairman, CEO, Gary R. Thompson stated, ' The new Catalyst and Tempest Porphyry Targets have very quickly become exciting drill ready targets. The use of XRF analysis on soils has dramatically reduced the time to drill readiness. We are keen to see what kind of copper-gold grades Catalyst can generate from our initial drilling. In addition to the potential at the Catalyst Target both, the Trapper Gold Targets and the Camp Creek Gold Targets continue to shine brightly . To date in 2025, Brixton has drilled a total of 4,029m: 2,160m at Camp Creek over 12 holes and 1,869m at Trapper over 10 holes with most of these results pending. ' Figure 1. Thorn Targets and Copper Porphyry Targets within the Camp Creek Corridor. About the Catalyst Copper-Gold Target The Catalyst Porphyry Target is located approximately 6 km northeast from the Camp Creek Porphyry system, within a NE-SW corridor hosting several underexplored porphyry-style prospects. The Catalyst Target was significantly expanded to a 2 km x 1 km copper-in-soil anomaly, with real-time XRF analysis revealing a classic zonation pattern typical of porphyry systems, centered molybdenum with depleted zinc, transitioning outward through copper-tellurium-selenium, and flanked by distal arsenic-antimony anomalies. The soil geochemical anomaly was expanded by a combination of XRF and ICP-MS analysis. Geological mapping correlates the copper anomaly with outcropping feldspar porphyritic units, showing moderate phyllic alteration (quartz-sericite-pyrite) and moderate to strong chlorite-hematite-pyrite alteration. Phyllic alteration extends over 2 km, grading into propylitic assemblages (chlorite-epidote-pyrite-carbonates). Veining as stockworks and sheeted veins with sericite haloes within the central zone include quartz + pyrite ± chalcopyrite + chlorite + hematite ± bornite. Initial ICP-MS assays from surface rock chip-samples within the anomaly returned encouraging values of ~0.5% Cu and 1 g/t Au, for both styles of alteration phyllic and chlorite, consistent with potential porphyry mineralization. Figure 2. Updated Soil Geochemistry Map for the Catalyst Target. Recent induced polarization (IP) geophysics has outlined shallow conductive zones with extensive chargeability anomalies, coincident with both the surface geochemistry and mapped alteration. These features are interpreted as indicative of a phyllic halo and will be the focus of first-phase drill testing, targeting higher-grade copper mineralization at depth. Figure 3. IP Geophysical Profiles of the Catalyst Target Area. Figure 4. Surface Rock Samples from the Catalyst Target. Sample D201227 – phyllic altered feldspar porphyry with parallel quartz + chalcopyrite + pyrite veins. Sample B137968 – chlorite altered volcanoclastic rock with stockwork veins of chlorite + hematite + pyrite + chalcopyrite. Technical Note: Soil sample analysis at the Catalyst Target is being performed using in-house XRF facilities, enabling rapid, real-time geochemical screening to support field operations. Comparative analysis with laboratory-based ICP-MS assays has confirmed consistent results across key elements, including Cu, As, Sb, Te, Se, and W. Standard QA/QC protocols, such as blanks, duplicates, and certified reference standards, are routinely employed to ensure data integrity. Given the strong correlation between XRF and laboratory data, the company will continue to utilize this accelerated workflow throughout the exploration season to expedite evaluation of additional targets across the project area. GE Vernova poised for more upside after shares blow past Wall Street targets, analysts say
Wall Street analysts scrambled to keep up with GE Vernova this week, dramatically hiking their stock price targets after the power company's shares blew past expectations on a strong second quarter. Its shares rallied more than 14% on Wednesday to close at an all-time high, after raising its full-year guidance as robust power demand blunts the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs. Its stock nearly doubled this year to book the second-best performance in the S & P 500. "Given what we viewed as elevated expectations ahead of GEV's 2Q25 earnings, we are somewhat surprised in the strength of GEV shares' outperformance," Citi analyst Andrew Kaplowitz told clients in a note published Wednesday. But rather than dismissing the rally as exuberance, Citi hiked its stock price target by $126 and now sees GE Vernova shares hitting $670, suggesting a modest upside of more than 6% over Wednesday's close. The company has the potential to sustain a much higher share price than Citi expected because it is a "prime beneficiary of growing global power demand," Kaplowitz said. Its gas turbines are in high demand from AI data center developers with its order backlog continuing to grow. Equipment orders jumped more than 135% "which gives more confidence in the 'stronger for longer' narrative in the global gas market," Wolfe Research analyst Nigel Coe told clients Wednesday. GE Vernova is also a leader in the development of small modular nuclear reactors , an emerging technology that could play a major role in the company's future. It is the first Western company to break ground on a commercial SMR with construction underway in Ontario. Its offshore wind power segment still faces challenges but appears "relatively contained and, for now, mainly overlooked given positive momentum elsewhere in the portfolio," Kaplowitz said. Bank of America was also bullish, bumping its price by $105 to set a target of $725 per share, implying 15% upside from Wednesday's close. Data centers placed $500 million of orders for the company's electric equipment in the first half of 2025, compared to $600 million in all of 2025, the bank noted. "We argue that a premium multiple is warranted given above-peer earnings growth and margin trajectory," BofA analyst Andrew Obin told clients in a Wednesday note. Wells Fargo, meanwhile, raised its price by a whopping $224 to a target of $674 per share, indicating upside 7% upside from Wednesday's close. This reflects favorable long-term tailwinds for GE Vernova and higher prices for its turbines and electric equipment supporting greater revenue, analyst Michael Blum told clients in a Thursday note. Wolfe Research, however, did sound a note of caution amid all the bullish sentiment on Wall Street: "There's a lot to like, but a lot is priced in," Coe said.
