WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks captain Scott Barrett has been ruled out of New Zealand's second and third rugby tests against France after injuring his ankle in the series-opening win.
Barrett was replaced midway through the second half of the first test in Dunedin which the All Blacks won 31-27. Scans have since revealed a tear in Barrett's calf muscle.

Backrower Ardie Savea will lead the All Blacks in the second test at Wellington on Saturday. The All Blacks have yet to name a replacement for Barrett at lock.
All Blacks assistant coach Scott Hansen said Barrett is 'a massive part of the team."
"We're obviously disappointed to lose the skip, but we've got to go forward. We trust our depth. There is an opportunity for someone else to step up.'
Hansen said it isn't yet clear how long Barrett will be sidelined.
'We'll just take it week for week,' he said. "He'll be keen to get back as quickly as possible but we obviously have to do what's right for him in the injury process.'

Willie le Roux will earn his 100th Springbok cap, with three debutants named for the second Test against Italy. Coach Rassie Erasmus emphasised the depth and rotation of the squad, bolstered by 13 players with World Cup-winning experience. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has announced his team for the second Test against Italy in Gqeberha on Saturday. Fullback Willie le Roux is set to become the 8th-ever player to reach 100 caps for South Africa, as he was named as the starting fullback for the match. The team is much changed from the one that laboured to victory against Italy at Loftus Versveld last Saturday, with Salmaan Moerat named captain and No 4 lock. Interestingly, Erasmus has named three uncapped players on the bench in prop Asenathi Ntlabakany, winger Ethan Hooker, and utility forward Cobus Wiese, brother of Jasper Wiese, who will start at No 8 for the second week in a row. Regular Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is still recovering from an injury niggle, so Marco van Staden will again wear the No 6 jumper. Seven players who will face the Azzurri for the second week in a row are Le Roux, Wilco Louw, Malcolm Marx, Marco van Staden, Jasper Wiese, all of whom have been named in the starting XV, while Ox Nche and Jan-Hendrik Wessels will make an impact off the replacements bench. There's also a return to action for Pieter-Steph du Toit, who starts at blindside flank, while Ruan Nortje partners Moerat at lock. Thomas du Toit will wear the No 1 jumper. In the backline, there is a new centre pairing in the form of Andre Esterhuizen and Canan Moodie, while Edwill van der Merwe and Makazole Mapimpi start on the wings. Commenting on Le Roux earning his 100th Test cap, Erasmus said: 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat. 'Only seven players in Springbok history have played 100 Tests before him, and to reach this milestone is testament to the player and team man that Willie is. 'Having come a long way with him during his career, I have no doubt that he'll put the team before his own achievements this weekend, and as a team, we would certainly like to make it a special and memorable occasion for him.' Erasmus was excited to see this team in action: 'We said from the outset that we would rotate the team as we have a large and very talented squad, and all but three of the players have played Test rugby before. Wales rugby player returning home early from Japan tour because of a concussion
KITAKYUSHU, Japan (AP) — Wales lock Ben Carter is returning home from Japan after sustaining a concussion inside 30 seconds of the first test at the weekend, the team said Tuesday. Carter was concussed following a heavy collision which forced referee Damian Schneider to immediately stop play in Kitakyushu on Saturday. Advertisement There was instant concern for the lock forward and Carter underwent several minutes of treatment on the field. A stretcher was called before the 24-year-old player was replaced. The Welsh Rugby Union announced Carter has been released from the squad and will be heading home on Wednesday. Wales lost the first test 24-19 for a record-extending 18th straight defeat. Finding Luigi: Homeless Bok superfan's family reported him missing, then saw him on News24
Homeless Springboks fan Alan Strydom, aka Luigi, shot to fame this month when Johan Kotze decided to take him to the Springboks vs Barbarians game in Cape Town. It has since emerged that his family has been looking for him since February. His sister, Charmelle, said the family saw News24's article via its WhatsApp channel and couldn't believe it was him. When Johan Kotze took a homeless man to watch the Springboks play in Cape Town, he didn't know the kind gesture could reunite the man with his long-lost family. After the story of Kotze and Alan Strydom, nicknamed Luigi, went public, the homeless man's family came forward. The family is based in Gqeberha and haven't seen Strydom since February… until they saw his face in an article on News24's WhatsApp channel last week. Kotze and Strydom captured the nation's hearts last week after Johan offered his spare Springboks ticket to Alan, who was preparing to sleep under the circle close to DHL Stadium at the time. The pair began chatting and Kotze learnt that he was an avid rugby fan. Moved by his story, Kotze decided to take him along. Now a reunion for the Strydom family is on the cards. 'As a family, we are overwhelmed with gratitude and joy after discovering that our beloved brother, Alan Strydom, was spotted at the Springboks game at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town,' his sister Charmelle said in a letter to News24. 'Imagine our surprise and relief when we stumbled upon an article featuring Alan, accompanied by Johan Kotze, enjoying the rugby match. The article highlighted Johan's humanitarian act of taking a homeless man to the game, unaware that the man in question was our brother.' Alan, a psychiatric patient at Fort England Psychiatric Institution in Makhanda, has been missing since 15 February 2025. 'We were beside ourselves with worry, unsure of his whereabouts or well-being. Our mother's health deteriorated rapidly since Alan went missing,' Charmelle continued. According to the family, the hospital's programmes have been instrumental in helping him manage his condition, teaching him valuable coping mechanisms. 'He also became a facilitator of these programmes at Fort England hospital, helping others with the same problems as his. 'However, he still needs to take his medication and report back to the hospital from time to time. He defaulted on his leave from hospital when he left home without informing anyone of his whereabouts.' Supplied by Charmelle Oliveira News24 spent three nights last week searching for Strydom at known homeless spots on the Atlantic Seaboard, with no success. Only one person knew him but couldn't say where he was. Kotze, of Riebeek West, also returned to Cape Town last week to try and find his new friend, with no success either. He also appeared on SABC's Expresso show on Monday to relay the inspiring story from the Barbarians game. In keeping with the ripple effect of kindness emanating from this story, a viewer of the show, Aphiwe Nsimbi, offered to give Charmelle his ticket to the Springboks match against Italy in Gqeberha this coming Saturday, 12 July, because he is no longer able to make it. Our father, who died in 2018, was the one who instilled the love for rugby in us as his children. 'Once again, we thank Johan Kotze for being a true 'good Samaritan' and making a difference in our brother's life. We hope that his selfless act will inspire others to pay it forward and make a positive impact on those around them.'
