Austrian Grand Prix start delayed after Carlos Sainz, Jr. stalls on the grid

SPIELBERG, Austria (AP) — The start of Formula 1's Austrian Grand Prix was delayed Sunday after Carlos Sainz, Jr. stalled on the grid.
Sainz was still stuck on the grid in his Williams when the frontrunners came around the last corner of the formation lap. The start was called off even though Sainz eventually got under way, and delayed around 15 minutes.
Worse was to come for Sainz, whose rear brakes caught fire when he pulled into the pit lane, forcing Williams mechanics and track marshals to use fire extinguishers. That ended Sainz's race before it began. Sainz had been due to start 19th.
Lando Norris is on pole position for McLaren ahead of Charles Leclerc for Ferrari and standings leader Oscar Piastri third in the other McLaren. Defending champion Max Verstappen starts seventh.

Advertisement Horner was left reflecting on a miserable weekend at the Red Bull Ring after watching on as Verstappen was wiped out by Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the opening lap of the race. 'Well, that was a home race to forget,' he added. 'We got unlucky [in qualifying], that then puts us in a position where you're in the crash zone, and Kimi just lost it in spectacular fashion up at Turn 3. 'Max was basically through the corner and getting back on the power, and just got wiped out, so, an unfortunate mistake by Kimi, he's apologised to Max, but, you know, for us it killed our afternoon.' Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions. Of his 15 Triple Crown race victories, Lukas won the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert had more Triple Crown victories.
