Richard Ashcroft: I'm happy Oasis are getting chance to have victory lap
Speaking to Vernon Kay on his Radio 2 show on Thursday, Ashcroft said The Verve had known brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher for many years and he been the warm-up act for Oasis 'many times' before.
'I've also in a way been there from almost the beginning… our stories are bonded whether we like it or not,' Ashcroft added.
He said the Oasis reunion shows, 16 years after they broke up, are a 'vindication for them that everything they did, it wasn't just some mirage, it wasn't just of the times, their stuff has lasted'.
Ashcroft went on: 'You know, not to have a cliche, they will live forever and I'm just happy for them.
'I'm happy for their mum, their family, everyone involved that they're getting that chance to have a victory lap, you know what I mean?'
Ashcroft was the latest artist to perform in the Piano Room on Kay's show, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra at London's Maida Vale studios.
Ashcroft performed Sonnet, Lover and a cover of Lady by Dennis Wilson and chatted to Vernon about the legacy of Oasis and The Verve.
He said his new solo album is due out in September, after he has finished touring with Oasis.
'I'm buzzing that I'm still here,' he added.
'I'm still making music, people pay me to make music, people pay me to sing live. It's like, I can't complain.'
Asked by Kay whose idea it was for him to support Oasis, Ashcroft said: 'I think it was their promoter, who is my promoter, but I think he had a number of people who would have done it for nothing, and I think he was hoping it was gonna be one of them.
'But I think Liam mentioned it in a meeting and Noel totally agreed because I used to say I supported Noel when I was younger, and Liam, Oasis, as a solo artist, they supported The Verve back in very early days.'
He also joked that when Oasis co-founder and guitarist Bonehead left the band, he would have liked to have filled his position.
'I would have taken the job, to be honest. I'd have been happy. I'd have been happy strumming along to those tunes, you know what I mean? Big weight off my shoulders, just have a laugh.'
Ashcroft also spoke of the timeless appeal of guitar-led bands such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and The Verve.
He told Kay: 'When I saw The Stones not that long ago, I was amazed at the cross-generational crowd.
'You've got grandads, sons, grandsons all together watching a show. And there's not many acts that can pull that off, and Oasis – and I believe myself – can do that. We can bring in multi-generations of families to enjoy it.'
Kay told listeners that the next Piano Room performance will be from Robbie Williams on August 21.

Thousands of excited music lovers are set to rock out to the music legends. But gig-goers have been issued new advice from Ticketmaster ahead of the shows. A key information sheet was sent out to fans heading to Murrayfield. It features plenty of rules about who can get into the show and what they need to bring with them and what they cannot have on them. The gates open at 5pm and the concert's curfew is 10.30pm. And it is vital fans make sure they follow the latest advice or they won't be getting into the concerts. Gig-goers have been reminded to bring valid ID in case they need to prove they are old enough to get in. They are only able to get in with an approved list of ID - like driving licences of passports. No one will be allowed in with an out of date ID and anyone trying to use a fake ID will not be allowed in. "No other agents are authorised to sell and any listing on unauthorised site cannot be guaranteed to gain entry to the event." Getting to the gig Fans have also been warned they cannot park their car at Murrayfield but can also get trains to Edinburgh and use Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses to get to the stadium. There are also several Park and Rides in the city. Fans were told: "There is no public parking available at the stadium and there will be road closures in the surrounding area. "There will be a designated Official Park & Ride at the Royal Highland Centre and tickets for the parking can be purchased on the Scottish Rugby ticketing website (ticket does not include the cost of the bus ticket, which can be purchased in advance via the Lothian bus website or via contactless payment when you board). "There are several other Park & Rides operating in and around Edinburgh." What is banned from Oasis at Murrayfield Fans are ALLOWED to bring bags under the size of a sheet of A4 paper, an unopened plastic bottle of water (max. 500ml), bank card/contactless payment (Murrayfield is a fully cashless site), small cameras, ear plugs, small hand sanitiser, hats, lip balm, make up, sunscreen, sunglasses, and more. "They are there to support customers and staff with any needs from physical to emotional and have a wealth of experience working at events throughout the UK. "If you've become intoxicated or need to take time out, welfare has a safe non-judgemental space available where you can rest and recover. "They can put you in touch with friends and family if you've become separated and will make sure you make it home safe and well. "First aiders and medical personnel will operate from the event and are there to support you if you have a minor injury, ailment, or mental health concern."

It's just a matter of days until Oasis take their reunion tour to Edinburgh. The Gallagher brothers are about to take to the stage at Murrayfield Stadium for the first time since 2009. The Oasis reunion tour makes its way up to Scotland from Wembley at the end of the week. The famous formerly-feuding brothers are performing three gigs in Edinburgh on August 8, 9, and 12. But as around 200,000 fans descend on Murrayfield across the three nights, it's vital to be prepared and organised, or you may risk getting caught in the crowds. We've already rounded up some of the travel options for getting to the stadium, as well as some surprising items you won't be allowed to take into the gigs. But another thing to consider is getting to your seat without any unnecessary stress- there are over 67,000 seats at Murrayfield, so it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the seating plan ahead of time to make sure you enter via the correct gate and find your seat with ease. The seating plan is split into five colour-coded areas: the East Stand, West Stand, North Stand, South Stand, and the Accessible Section. Your ticket will also tell you which stand your seats are in. The numbered section and seat number within your stand will also be shown on your ticket, and more stewards will help you to find your seat once you are inside the venue. One fan said on a fan group: '18 years worth of events, most with 90,000 people attending, and never an incident like it. It's a tragic accident, and blaming it on the venue or security is ridiculous.' An eyewitness to the fatal fall wrote on Facebook: 'He fell from the top tier into our block. My friend's daughter did CPR until the paramedics arrived.' Another shaken onlooker, who was sitting just three seats away, recalled: 'Hearing the bang and seeing the aftermath was just something that will stay with you forever.' 'The atmosphere was incredible,' commented a third on Facebook. 'We were nearing the end of the concert, when in the middle of Wonderwall, he fell right in front of us, a few metres away. Oasis released a statement about the man, saying that they are 'shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' Before singing Live Forever on Sunday, Liam Gallagher appeared to pay his respects to the late fan. He said: 'This one's for all the people who can't be here tonight, but who are here if you know what I mean, and aren't they looking lovely.' "Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. "Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers. "The Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them. "Tonight's Oasis concert will go ahead as planned." Saturday's gig was the fourth of seven London shows on Oasis' blockbuster reunion tour. The band crashed ticket sites when they announced they were making a comeback last year - as more than 14 million fans tried to secure a seat at the highly-anticipated gigs. Last month Liam and Noel reunited on stage in Cardiff for the first time since a backstage bust-up broke up the band 16 years ago. The Britpop icons returned to their hometown of Manchester for five dates in July. They performed a 23-song setlist of classic hits, including Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger and Live Forever to a roaring crowd of 80,000 people at Heaton Park. They will head to America later this month before returning to London for two more gigs in September. Wembley Stadium said in a statement to The Sun: "Wembley Stadium operates to a very high health and safety standard, fully meeting legal requirements for the safety of spectators and staff, and is certified to and compliant with the ISO 45001 standard. "We work very closely and collaboratively with all relevant event delivery stakeholders - including event owners, local authorities, the Sports Ground Safety Authority and the police - to deliver events to high standards of safety, security and service for everyone attending or working in the venue."
