Annual Garda memorial day made ‘more poignant' by recent killing of colleague
Garda Kevin Flatley died last Sunday after being struck by a motorcycle at a speed checkpoint in Co Dublin.
President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste Simon Harris were among the crowds of mourners who attended the funeral service for the 49-year-old married father-of-two in Balbriggan on Friday.
On Saturday, Garda Flatley's parents were among those who attended the annual Garda memorial day at Dublin Castle.
Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan described the day as "particularly poignant" following the recent loss of Garda Flatley.
"My immediate thoughts are with his wife Una and their two children Aoife and Erin, his parents, his family and his friends," he said.
"I offer my condolences again to them at this deeply sad time.
"I also offer my condolences to the men and women Garda Flatley worked with in the roads policing division, and indeed all of his colleagues in the wider Garda family."
He said Garda Flatley "typified the ethos of An Garda Siochana".
"He worked in service of those he lived alongside," he said.
"I am very conscious that Garda Flatley died doing what gardai do every day across the country, working to keep us all safe. His death is a stark reminder to all of us of the very real dangers involved in being a member of An Garda Siochana.
"Today is an opportunity for us to remember and recognise the selflessness and bravery of those who are gone, the courageous members of An Garda Siochana who went to work one morning and tragically never came home, having been killed in the line of duty."
Garda commissioner Drew Harris said he wanted to "particularly welcome" Garda Flatley's parents Michael and Breda to the service.
"His tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers faced by gardai daily in the course of their duties.
"It brings home to us all the grief and pain we feel as individuals, and collectively, having lost a loved one.
"Very sadly our roll of honour now stands at 90 gardai. Soon Kevin's name will join the 89 other names etched on our Garda memorial here, and on each Garda memorial day when we gather here in these beautiful surroundings we will remember Kevin and all those killed in the line of duty.
"Today we honour their service to this country, their commitment to making Ireland a safer place, their contribution to society and the state.
"We pay tribute to their bravery and courage, their resilience in the face of adversity, their determination to face down danger to help others. Today we think of their sacrifice.
"Their loss is felt as deeply now as the day they were taken from us."

Garda car 'deliberately' hit by Northern registered Audi in 'serious incident'
An investigation is underway after a motorist 'deliberately' drove into a Garda car in Louth, causing damage to the vehicle. At around 8:30pm on Saturday, August 3, members of the Louth Roads Policing unit were on patrol as part of the Garda Bank Holiday weekend road safety operation when they were involved in a serious incident. Gardaí have been conducting a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend which commenced at 7am on Thursday, July 31 and will continue until 7am Wednesday, August 6. While patrolling the Ravendale area, north of Dundalk, Gardaí observed a grey Northern Ireland registered Audi A4 acting suspiciously. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver deliberately drove into and caused damage to the Roads Policing patrol car showing a reckless disregard for Garda safety. Gardaí say they are 'working closely' with colleagues in the PSNI to identify those responsible as they appeal for witnesses. The young man's dad passed away a few years ago FINAL GOODBYE '19 years of happy memories' -Heartbroken mum pays tribute to 'beautiful' son, 19, killed in Dublin collision THE mother of a teenage cyclist who died in hospital following a collision has paid a heartbreaking tribute to the "beautiful" boy. The incident, which involved a car and a bicycle, happened on the R113, Fonthill Road South in Clondalkin shortly after 11:40pm on Sunday, July 27. The cyclist, a 19-year-old man, was raced to Beaumont Hospital in a critical condition. Gardai confirmed this morning that he was pronounced dead at the hospital yesterday August 4. The coroner has been notified and post-mortem examination will be carried out. The deceased has been named locally as Luke Bryne, 19, from Clondalkin. Tragically Luke's dad Shane passed away a number of years ago. In a heartbreaking post on social media his mother Martina McGarry wrote: "My beautiful son you're in peace now. "You put one of the hardest fights you gave me in 19 years of happy memories that I'll cherish forever. "You'll never be forgotten. You will always be in my heart. "I know you will be in heaven looking down on me. You're back home with you dad now gone but never forgotten. "Love you so much son. Sleep tight." 'WILL FOREVER BE MISSED' A family friend also wrote: "Beautiful boy will forever be missed such a gentleman he was. You were the best mother he could of asked for, you gave him the world rest in peace Luke. "Thinking of you and all your family at this heartbreaking time'." Gardai have renewed this appeal for witnesses to the crash to come forward. A Garda spokesperson said: "Road users who may have relevant camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. "Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station at 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station." Luke is the 98th person to died on Irish roads this year, nine of whom have been cyclists. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

Tributes to Irish Rail employee and 'pure gentleman' found dead in Tipperary
Tributes have been paid to Irish Rail employee and "pure gentleman" Ian Walsh who was found dead in Carrick-on-Suir in south Tipperary in the early hours of Monday morning. The body of Mr Walsh, aged 49, was discovered by relatives at his home in Ravenswood on Cregg Road at 3.30am. Family members raised the alarm and gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene. Mr Walsh was formally pronounced dead by a local GP. He had a number of injuries to his body. It is understood he had not been seen for a few days. An autopsy will be carried out on Tuesday at University Hospital Waterford, which will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The death is being treated as suspicious in nature. Mr Walsh was well-known and liked by his colleagues in Irish Rail, and by railway enthusiasts around the country. Táilte Tours, a railway heritage group, said it felt extreme sadness at the passing of Mr Walsh, who was a 'signaller at Cork station and a huge supporter' of its rail tour operation. "Ian ran five rail tours of his own over the course of the mid to late 2000s, and was very much a pioneer in 'outside the box' tours in Ireland, starting them from locations such as Waterford and Limerick, in an era when tours were generally based in Dublin or Belfast. "He was more than happy to pass his experience and expertise on when we started operations a few years ago; for those of you who enjoyed the 'surprise' rare track moves on our Cork-based rail tours, you can thank Ian, who went far beyond the extra mile to ensure our operations went off without a hitch. "He had a wonderful knowledge of the Iarnród Éireann system and its people, and had also developed a passion for Bus Éireann operations, diligently recording the last runs on several rural routes in the south east as they disappeared, quickly becoming a friend to bus drivers in the Cork and Waterford areas.' Iarnród Éireann expressed shock at the passing of a 'well-known and popular colleague'. Mr Walsh, who was also a licensed bus driver, was known for his passion for railway and transport tourism and heritage. He was known as 'Squinty' to his many friends. Meanwhile, gardaí are attempting to establish the last known movements of Mr Walsh. Door-to-door inquiries will be carried out in the estate where he lived. Gardaí will also check CCTV security camera footage from houses in the area to determine any movements to and from the property. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information related to the incident to come forward, including any road users who were in the area of Cregg Road between 8pm on Friday and 3.30am on Monday. Additionally, anyone who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and was travelling in the area at the time is asked to make it available to gardaí.
