Thunder hold off Pacers to take 3-2 NBA Finals lead

Jalen Williams erupted for 40 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Indiana Pacers to score a 120-109 victory and move to within one win of clinching the NBA Finals on Monday.
An enthralling game-five battle in Oklahoma saw the Pacers climb out of an 18-point first-half hole to get within two points of the Thunder in the fourth quarter.
But just as Indiana threatened the latest in a series of trademark comebacks, the Thunder found an extra gear with Williams and NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander steering the team to a pivotal victory.
The win leaves the Thunder 3-2 up in the best-of-seven series, meaning they can seal the NBA crown with victory in game six in Indianapolis on Thursday.
Williams finished with 40 points, six rebounds and four assists while Gilgeous-Alexander co-starred with 31 points and 10 assists, four blocks and two steals.
'My team-mates instill a lot of confidence in me to go out and be me,' Williams said. 'And (coach) Mark (Daigneault) has done a good job of telling me to just be myself.
'I don't got to be anything more and that's given me a lot of confidence.'

Norris wins epic home British GP

AFP | Silverstone Lando Norris won a treacherous rain-hit British Grand Prix at Silverstone yesterday from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg took third for the veteran German's first ever podium in 239 races. Briton Norris returned to a rapturous reception from his home fans as he moved to within eight points of Piastri in the drivers' standings. 'It's beautiful, everything I ever dreamed of, this is everything I wanted to achieve, aside from winning the champion ship this is as good as it gets,' beamed Norris. Piastri, who finished less than seven seconds behind Norris, threw away the win after the Australian was hit with a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement. As last week's heatwave gave way to a more typical British summer's day -- spells of blue sky mixed with torrential showers -- drivers had to keep their wits about them with puddles forming on the track. And Norris emerged from the chaos all smiles as he added to his wins already this season in Austria, Monaco and Australia. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton came in fourth ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Piastri fell foul of the stewards when braking heavily before the safety car peeled off, a decision that left Piastri feeling robbed. 'I'm not going to say much, I don't want to get myself in trouble,' he said in the post-race interview. 'Apparently, you can't brake behind the safety car anymore,' he added. For Hulkenberg, 37, this was a day to remember as he climbed the podium for the first time since joining the F1 grid way back in 2010. 'Podium - P3 baby!' said his ecstatic race engineer on the team radio after he crossed the line. 'I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done,' replied the German. Pierre Gasly's Alpine took sixth, with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Alex Albon (Williams), Fernando Alonso in the other Aston and George Russell (Mercedes) rounding out the top 10.

Bayern's Musiala out for ‘long period' with broken fibula

AFP | Paris Bayern Munich playmaker Jamal Musiala faces a 'long period' on the sidelines after he suffered a broken fibula and an ankle dislocation at the Club World Cup, the German champions said yesterday. The 22-year-old Germany international was hurt in a challenge with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as Bayern lost 2-0 in the quarter-finals in Atlanta on Saturday. Coach Vincent Kompany was incensed by the injury but called it an 'accident'. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer criticised Donnarumma though for being 'reckless'. Musiala was on a flight back to Munich yesterday morning and will undergo surgery soon, Bayern said in a statement.

Messi returns to MLS with spectacular double in Inter victory

AFP | Miami Lionel Messi scored two brilliant goals to lift Inter Miami to a 4-1 victory over Montreal in Miami's return to Major League Soccer action on Saturday in the wake of their elimination from the Club World Cup. Miami were playing their first MLS game in more than a month. They had advanced past the first phase of the Club World Cup but fell 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 last week. Messi made sure there was no lingering let-down for Javier Mascherano's side, who are aiming to improve on their curent sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 17 matches. 'It is a great night, we took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again,' Mascherano said. 'It is never easy to reintegrate into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players have done it perfectly.'
