But even with all that action, Game 7 averaged 16.35 million viewers—strong, yet down 9.3% from last year's series average.

In comparison, the NHL's 4 Nations Final pulled in 16.1 million viewers—just 0.25 million behind Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Even more telling was the NHL event's growth: up a staggering 25% from the last international hockey tournament, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
National pride and rivalry gave the NHL the edge
Much of the 4 Nations Face-Off's appeal stemmed from its novelty and underlying fan tension—particularly between American and Canadian supporters. Viewers were captivated by the return of top NHL talent to international ice, including Team Canada's Cale Makar, who said after the final, 'I mean, it's incredible.

"I'm aware of the history on the line. I'm thinking about the big things I can do in this tournament," he said. "I don't reflect on it for now. I think that will come when I sip a margarita on the beach with (Roger) Federer and (Rafael) Nadal!" - Krejcikova's relief - Eight top 10 seeds in the men's and women's singles were beaten in the first round, which ranks as the most at a Grand Slam in the Open era. Only one of the top five women's seeds -- world number one Aryna Sabalenka -- is still standing. But Krejcikova and five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek avoided joining the big name casualties with hard-fought three set wins. Elena Rybykina, Wimbledon winner in 2022, was in fine form as she demolished Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1. Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva, aged just 18, beat Italy's Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) on Court One. Jack Draper is the new figurehead of British men's tennis, taking on a role filled for a generation by the now-retired Andy Murray. The fourth seed faces a tough second round clash against former finalist Marin Cilic. World number one Jannik Sinner is up last on centre court against Australia's Aleksandar Vukic, aiming to build on an impressive start to his quest for a first Wimbledon crown.

The Indian grand master shared the top spot at the end of play on Day 1 and he continued his good form on the second day as well. Gukesh started the second day with a win over Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the fourth round and then defeated American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in the fifth round. After this came his match with Carlsen and Gukesh triumphed in that as well with black pieces. This was Gukesh's fifth win in a row at the tournament. Interestingly, this victory came after Carlsen termed Gukesh 'one of the weaker players' at the event. "Gukesh hasn't done anything to indicate that he's going to do well in such a tournament," Carlsen had said in an interview before the tournament. "Gukesh actually played quite well here last time. But it remains to be proven that he's one of the best players in such a format. This is a very, very strong field that we have here. Players like Gukesh and Anish Giri... they have a lot to prove because there aren't a lot of players you can feast on. In the course of 27 rounds, things usually show. I hope for Gukesh's sake that he can play better, but playing him in this tournament I will sort of approach it as I'm playing one of the presumably weaker players in the tournament actually," he had added. Starting the tournament with a loss against Duda, Gukesh overpowered a reckless Alireza Firouzja of France before defeating compatriot R Praggnanandhaa to reach on four points out of a possible six. Carlsen beat Wesley So and drew his remaining two games against local star Ivan Saric and Duda to match Gukesh on points, while Wesley was the only other player involved in all decisive games, apart from Gukesh, as he put it across his US compatriot Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri of Holland.
