Quebec government names Montreal Canadiens great Maurice Richard a ‘historic figure'
Quebec Culture Minister Mathieu Lacombe announced the designation alongside members of Richard's family at a ceremony today at the Bell Centre.
The government defines a historic figure as a person who is now deceased who played a role in the province's history.
Richard dominated the NHL beginning in 1940s, when he became the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games.
The legend of the player known as the Rocket was also intertwined with the identity and struggle of French-speaking Quebecers, and he is seen as a catalyst for the Quiet Revolution.
The frenzy over Richard reached its peak in March 1955 when fans angered over a three-game suspension to their star smashed windows and overturned cars in downtown Montreal in an event now known as the Richard riot.

Canada's Leylah Fernandez wins Citi Open for fourth career WTA title
WASHINGTON – Canada's Leylah Fernandez defeated Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 for her fourth career WTA title at the Citi Open hardcourt tennis tournament on Sunday. Fernandez's last title came at Hong Kong in October 2023. Her most recent final had been a bit over a year ago when she was a runner-up to Daria Kasatkina on the grass of WTA 500 Eastbourne. The Laval, Que., native broke on four of her six chances, going 2 for 3 in each of the two sets in the one-hour, nine-minute match. Fernandez also had two aces and four double faults, to go along with winning 75 per cent of her first-serve points. Kalinskaya was held to just one break-point opportunity, which she did not convert, and only won 61.5 per cent of her first-serve points. Tina Charles scores 24 points as WNBA-worst Sun pound expansion Valkyries 95-64
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Tina Charles scored 24 points, Bria Hartley and Marina Mabrey both added 15 and the last-place Connecticut Sun rolled to a 95-64 win over the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday. The Sun (4-20) had a season high for points thanks to season bests of 12 3-pointers, 53% overall shooting (35 of 66) and 14 steals. French rookie Leila Lacan had six steals in just her sixth game. Jacy Sheldon scored 13 points off the bench for the Sun, who turned 24 turnovers into 34 points to end a four-game skid. Charles reached double figures for the 395th time, third in WNBA history behind Diana Taurasi (488) and Tina Thompson (404), and scored 20 points or more for the 185th time, second behind Taurasi (259). She played just 19 minutes. Illana Rupert scored 13 points off the bench for the expansion Valkyries (11-13), who suffered their worst loss in franchise history in their second game since losing All-Star Kayla Thornton to a season-ending knee injury. Veronica Burton added 10 points. Saniya Rivers hit a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead and the Suns never looked back. It was 23-15 after one quarter and 49-33 at the half. The Sun outscored the Valkyries 46-31 in the second half. Connecticut's previous season high was 93 points in a 10-point win over Seattle prior to the four-game losing streak. Create Account The 142nd-ranked Stakusic, in her fourth appearance at the NBO, was making her main draw debut in Montreal after bowing out in the second round of last year's tournament, held in Toronto. The 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., got off to a strong start, breaking Cristian in the Romanian's very first service game to go up 2-0 in the opening set. The Canadian broke her opponent again in the eighth game to take the opening set 6-2. Cristian wasted little time, however, getting on the board in the second set, breaking Stakusic at love in the opening game. The Romanian, currently ranked a career-high 49th in the WTA rankings, would go on to break her opponent twice more as she evened the match at a set apiece. The third set played out almost identically to that of the second, with Cristian taking the opening game on Stakusic's serve. Cristian will now play Czechia's Linda Noskova in the second round. Noskova, the 20th seed of the tournament, is coming off a runner-up finish at the Prague Open, where she lost Saturday to compatriot Marie Bouzkova in three sets. Stakusic set the table for what promises to be a busy day for Canadians on Montreal's Centre Court. Highly-touted 18-year-old Victoria Mboko is set to make her main draw debut at the National Bank Open later this afternoon against Australia's Kimberly Birrell. Toronto's Mboko has had a breakout 2025 season on tour, qualifying for both the French Open and Wimbledon, where she reached the third and second round, respectively. Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., will open up the night session against two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova. The 25-year-old Canadian, who won the NBO in Toronto in 2019, is coming off a strong showing at the Hopman Cup last week in Italy, as she teamed up with Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime to capture the exhibition team tournament. Andreescu won all three of her singles matches in straight sets, dropping only nine games at the competition. Action concludes on Centre Court with Vancouver's Rebecca Marino taking on French qualifier Elsa Jacquemot. The 34-year-old Marino has struggled this season, winning just one WTA Tour-level match all season. Sunday marks the start of a revamped 12-day, 96-player format, which will notably see the top 32 seeds receive automatic byes into the tournament's second round.
