Guwahati: Almost half of the city experienced flooding following 37mm rainfall within 24 hours, disrupting daily activities on Friday even as one person lost his life in a wall collpase after rain in Mizoram.
The IMD has issued alerts — red for Saturday and orange for Sunday. There is prediction of continuous rain until Saturday.
A 37-year-old man died after being buried under a collapsed stone retaining wall in the Thuampui area, on the northern outskirts of Aizawl, on Friday morning. His companion sustained serious injuries in the incident, which occurred amid severe monsoon rains and strong winds that caused widespread destruction across the state, police said.
Due to continuous rainfall since Thursday causing deteriorating conditions, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma declared special casual leave for govt employees in Kamrup and Kamrup Metro districts on Friday, excluding those residing in office quarters. He announced closure of govt educational institutions in these districts for Saturday. He advised private organisations to operate with minimal staff and suggested employees residing far away to remain at home.
"The weather is likely to remain the same till tomorrow evening, and there is a possibility of improvement from Sunday. Owing to the grim situation, power supply was cut in many parts across the state, affecting around nine lakh people, and 100 electricity transformers were kept shut in the city to prevent any possible untoward incidents," he added.
Nine Guwahati-bound flights were redirected to Agartala and Kolkata, with numerous others delayed since Thursday due to adverse weather conditions.
A Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport representative indicated potential increases in flight diversions due to ongoing poor weather.
"Most of the flights were diverted to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, and a few were diverted to Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, Agartala. For instance, Mumbai-Guwahati and Ahmedabad-Guwahati flights were diverted to Agartala, and flights from Chennai, Lucknow, and Delhi were diverted to Kolkata," the spokesperson said.
Some morning flights managed to land and depart with delays.
LGBI Airport typically handles 125 daily flights. The diverted aircraft will return once weather improves.
Authorities suspended ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati on the Brahmaputra until further notice. The flooding severely impacted public transport, forcing service suspension on Friday.
Various areas experienced waist-deep flooding, while others had knee-deep water.
The district disaster management authority deployed rubber boats with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for evacuation and assistance. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported three landslides in Guwahati hills — at Nizarapar's Lichubagan, Chitrachal Path at Kharghuli, and Ujjal Nagar at Kahilipara.
No casualties occurred.
The Kamrup (Metro) district administration provided emergency contact numbers for residents requiring assistance during adverse weather, flooding and landslides. Khanapara, situated near the Meghalaya border, suffered severe impact, affecting National Highway 6 traffic. This crucial entry point for upper Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh witnessed thousands of vehicles, including long-distance buses, stranded for hours.
The other severely affected areas included Rukminigaon, Hatigaon, GS Road, Bhangagarh, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and Chandmari.

Rain brings relief from heat, Delhi-NCR breathes cleanest July air in decade

Continuous rainfall in Delhi-NCR on Thursday has brought much-needed respite from the sweltering heat, while simultaneously delivering a remarkable improvement in air quality. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), July 2025 has recorded the cleanest air in over a decade, with Air Quality Index (AQI) readings falling below 50 in several parts of the region -- a level categorised as 'very good'. This drastic improvement is largely attributed to the frequent rain showers over the past week, which have significantly reduced dust and airborne pollutants. However, while the rains have cleansed the atmosphere, they have also led to waterlogging and traffic congestion, posing a major challenge for the municipal authorities and daily commuters. As of July 31, many monitoring stations across Delhi-NCR reported AQI levels in the 20s and 30s. Prominent locations such as Alipur (28), Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium (38), Bawana (36), Narela and Nehru Nagar (both 48), Indirapuram in Ghaziabad (31), and Noida's Sector 62 and Sector 1 (both 34) registered some of the cleanest air seen in the capital in recent memory -- often even cleaner than hill stations. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the region is expected to remain under a cloud cover with light to moderate rainfall continuing until August 5. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely between August 1 and 3, potentially bringing further relief from heat and pollution. Forecasts for the next few days indicate a maximum temperature hovering between 33-35 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24-26 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels may peak at around 95 per cent, contributing to the discomfort. Meanwhile, persistent rain since late Wednesday night continued through Thursday morning, especially in the Lutyens' zone of central Delhi, where intermittent showers created a rhythmic pattern of drizzle and pause. The IMD has also predicted the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning throughout the day. However, the city's infrastructure continues to struggle under the weight of monsoon downpours. Waterlogging has crippled major roads, leading to long traffic jams across Delhi-NCR. Office-goers and daily commuters faced significant delays as several arterial routes were submerged, highlighting the persistent urban planning and drainage challenges. Still, the rare combination of cool weather and sparkling clean air offered a silver lining -- giving Delhiites a breath of fresh air, quite literally, in what has become the city's cleanest July in over 10 years.

IMD augmenting its observation network in T.N. under Mission Mausam: MoS Jitendra Singh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is taking measures to augment its observation network, including in the flood-prone coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, under the Mission Mausam and Panchayat level Mausam Seva, said Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent charge), Ministry of Science and Technology. In his response to the unstarred question raised by MP Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday, Mr. Singh said there are 65 automatic weather stations and 80 automatic rain gauges in Tamil Nadu. In the flood-prone districts of Chennai, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, there are a total of eight AWS and eight ARGs. It would be augmented further based on requirement. Mr. Maran had raised a question on the Union Government's plans to expand observation network, including AWS, ARGs and doppler weather radars. He had also raised another query on whether there was a dedicated strategy to enhance nowcast and short-range forecasts targeting vulnerable geographical regions of T.N., including Western Ghats and Delta region. To a question on plans to collaborate with Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) to improve flood preparedness, Mr. Singh said IMD collaborated with TNSDMA and shared real-time weather data and sector-specific weather warnings. The Central Water Commission has been instructed to issue short-range flood forecasts with a lead time of 24 hours. Mr. Maran had also enquired whether the Union government had plans to make Tamil-language versions of the IMD mobile application and farmer-specific forecast platforms. This would help reach out to the rural population and agricultural workers. In his reply, Mr. Singh underlined the ongoing efforts to include 'Uzhavar' mobile application developed by the State Agriculture Department. District level agromet advisories issued by IMD along with various agencies are now available in Tamil on the app. Multiple platforms, including WhatsApp, are being used to disseminate farmer-centric weather information in Tamil, he added.
