Trina Solar Eyes Morocco as Key Market in African Solar Expansion

Morocco World6 days ago
Chinese solar manufacturer Trina Solar is seeking to expand its presence in Morocco as a priority market as part of its growth strategy in North Africa, citing the country's aggressive renewable energy goals and supportive government policies as key opportunities.
Speaking to Morocco World News (MWN) at the Africa Energy Forum, held from June 17-20 in Cape Town, South Africa, Zaheer Khan, Trina Solar's Regional Director for Southern Africa, pointed out Morocco's strategic importance to the company's continental growth plans. Zaheer Khan, Trina Solar's Regional Director for Southern Africa
'Morocco's got quite aggressive targets for renewable energy by 2030 and numerous subsidies as well that are available in the market, which make it a very viable target segment for us,' Khan said.
Trina Solar, one of the world's top three solar module manufacturers with global sales of 60-70 gigawatts last year, has established a strong African presence. The company supplied over one gigawatt of solar equipment across the continent in the past year and claims the number one market share in South Africa.
Strategic partnerships and projects
The company has positioned staff across key African markets, including Morocco, where Khan's colleague, based in the country, has identified promising opportunities, including a target of clean energy of 50% of electricity production by 2030.
These also include Morocco's phosphate giant OCP's program of a 2GW solar project to reduce its carbon footprint, of which 200MW is already installed, as well as the country's huge solar projects, including Noor Midelt 1, 2, and 3 in addition to Noor Ouarzazate.
Khan spoke of several projects being promoted by MASEN, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy, as particularly noteworthy prospects for Trina Solar's involvement.
Beyond large-scale installations, Trina Solar sees potential in Morocco's solar pumping sector. Khan noted that 'the Moroccan government is also trying to promote moving some of the grid-connected solar pumping to off-grid, ideally solar pumping solutions.'
This shift aligns with Trina Solar's diversified product portfolio, which extends beyond solar panels to include battery energy storage systems and tracker technologies. The company recently demonstrated its storage capabilities with a successful 350-megawatt-hour battery energy storage project in Egypt.
Continental vision
Khan also expressed optimism about expanding battery solutions throughout Africa, building on recent North African successes. 'Soon we hope to expand our battery solutions throughout the African continent and continue our success in this region,' he said.
With offices in Kenya, Nigeria, and Morocco supporting operations across East, West, and North Africa, respectively, Trina Solar appears well-positioned to capitalize on the continent's growing renewable energy demand.
The company's focus on Morocco reflects broader recognition of the country's leadership in renewable energy development, supported by government incentives that Khan described as making the market particularly attractive for international solar manufacturers.
Morocco is setting a goal to achieve 52% energy production through clean, renewable sources by 2030, an ambition designed to boost the North African country's sustainable development goals.

Morocco embraces AI for national sovereignty and development at first National AI Conference

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into national strategies is essential for sovereignty, said Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Deputy Minister in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, on Tuesday in Salé. Speaking at the opening of Morocco's first National AI Conference, she stressed the urgent need for both institutional and collective awareness that AI is not a future concept, it is a present-day reality. This reality, she explained, is already reshaping key sectors such as social protection, education, health, finance, and urban planning, redefining long-held principles of equity, efficiency, reliability, and sovereignty. As such, she urged that AI should not be seen as a secondary technical tool, but as a core institutional responsibility that requires rethinking how the public sector operates and rebuilding systems of trust between citizens and the state. The minister also emphasized the dual responsibility brought on by the rapid evolution of AI. On one hand, it is vital to avoid clinging to outdated administrative models; on the other, the country must remain agile and ready to redirect national strategies, such as the Digital Morocco 2030 plan, toward full AI integration. Seghrouchni pointed out a key paradox of AI: its ability to either reinforce inequalities or help reduce them. The goal, she said, is to harness AI as a force for social justice and equitable access to opportunities and resources. Highlighting Morocco's African depth, she asserted that AI is not just a global tech race, but also a question of symbolic and material sovereignty, an arena where global power balances are being redefined. She concluded by calling for a sovereign approach to AI, managed «at the level of a nation with a true will for reform and the courage to lead», so that artificial intelligence becomes a genuine driver of development.

Morocco's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Mohamed Arrouchi held talks on Monday in Addis Ababa with a delegation from the UNECA led by Deputy Executive Secretary Antonio Pedro. This meeting took place within the framework of the Kingdom's presidency of the Bureau of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (CoM). It also forms part of the ongoing consultations between the Moroccan CoM Presidency and UNECA bodies, aimed at coordinating preparations for upcoming continental events. On this occasion, Arrouchi reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to continuing its efforts in favor of concerted African action, based on the principles of solidarity, efficiency, and results. It is worth recalling that Morocco was unanimously elected last March to the presidency of the 57th session of the UNECA and the CoM, an election that reflects the confidence of member states in the Kingdom's leadership and its commitment to dynamic and inclusive economic governance in Africa. ONMT, China Eastern Airlines Sign Agreement to Boost Morocco's Appeal in Chinese Market

Rabat – The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and the airline China Eastern Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday in Rabat, confirming the growing strategic importance of the Asian market in Morocco. Minister of Tourism Fatim Zahra Ammor, ONMT Director General Achraf Fayda and China Eastern Airlines President Wang Zhinqing chaired the signing ceremony. The partnership includes a marketing strategy as well as joining actions, press trips, and seeking to boost Morocco's appeal as a premier tourist destination in the Chinese market. The agreement also aims to optimize air connections to Morocco. The Minister of Tourism emphasized the importance of the partnership, stressing the country's ambition to position itself as an exceptional destination for travelers from across the world. 'With China Eastern, we are strengthening our presence in Asia and reaffirming our diversification strategy,' Ammor said. Fayda also highlighted the importance of the agreement, noting that the cooperation is based on a long-term, ambitious vision for tourism development. ONMT aims to attract at least one million Chinese tourists by 2030. 'His partnership with China Eastern reflects our ability to forge strategic alliances with major players in global air transport,' Fayda added, noting ONMT's commitment to opening Morocco to the most dynamic and demanding markets. The signing of the partnership follows China Eastern's launch of the Shanghai-Casablanca air route via Marseille in January 2025. In October, a direct route will also be launched with a frequency of three flights per week. With this new air route, Casablanca will be connected to China's main outbound tourism hub, in addition to the direct Beijing-Casablanca line operated by Royal Air Maroc. Tags: Business TourismChina
