Hot dog survives locker ordeal at Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle

Reuters12 hours ago
BERLIN, July 6 (Reuters) - A dog was rescued from a locker for valuables at Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany after its owner shut her pet inside over the objections of other tourists so that she could visit the famous attraction, police said on Sunday.
Neuschwanstein, a picture-postcard castle with surging turrets nestled in the Alps near the border with Austria, is one of Germany's top tourist attractions.
Despite it being a hot summer's day and half the locker already having been filled by a pram, the woman locked the dog inside the small space and left to tour the castle, police in the nearby town of Fuessen said in a statement. Security staff were alerted and freed the dog, they added.
"The dog was fortunately unharmed but visibly glad when it was rescued from the already hot locker," the police statement said, adding that officers deployed to the scene took him back to the police station.
The police did not specify what breed the dog was but said it was of "medium" size and about 60 cm (two feet) tall at the shoulder. An officer on duty at Fuessen police station contacted by telephone said the dog was a mongrel.
Police said they had initiated criminal proceedings against the owner on suspicion of breaking Germany's animal welfare law.

New details emerge as woman loses her arm after being attacked by a lion at Darling Downs Zoo

The woman who lost her arm in a lion attack at a Queensland zoo on Sunday had known and worked alongside the animal for decades. The incident occurredat Darling Downs Zoo, near Toowoomba, at about 8.30am on Sunday morning. The woman had known the big cat for 20 years before it pounced, and the damage caused meant her arm could not be saved after paramedics flew her to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. Darling Downs Zoo took to its social media pages on Sunday to say 'one animal grabbed her by one arm and caused severe damage to it'. The zoo said she had been observing keepers working when the incident occurred. 'This is something that she has done many, many times over the past 20 years,' the zoo wrote on Facebook. 'She is well-versed in safety protocols around potentially dangerous animals. 'Inexplicably, at this stage, one animal grabbed her by one arm and caused severe damage to it. The animal will definitely not be put down or punished in any way. 'At no stage did this animal leave its enclosure and there was no risk at all to staff members or members of the public.' The zoo said Workplace Health and Safety personnel were investigating the attack. 'The zoo is working with them to establish how this incident occurred but the full details will not be known until (the woman) can be interviewed,' the zoo said. The animal will definitely not be put down or punished in any way. The zoo was closed on Sunday and is expected to re-open on Tuesday. It also posted on social media that 'the injured person was not one of our immediate family nor a keeper'. When contacted by Daily Mail Australia and asked why the woman was in the enclosure despite not being a keeper, the zoo refused to answer. 'If it wasn't a family member (which shouldn't be in there anyway) or a keeper, or someone who looks after the animals, then who was it then? A tourist, A trespasser?' one person wrote on Facebook. Another replied suggesting the woman was a cleaner at the zoo. Steve and Stephanie Robinson have owned and operated the zoo for 20 years, which is home to rare white lions, as well as lion cubs. The pair began breeding lions in 1997. In 2002, they moved their animal collection to the Darling Downs region west of Brisbane and started building the Darling Downs Zoo. Recently, the zoo talked about its supervised encounters with its lionesses on social media. 'Each day at 10am they are on supervised display to our visitors and are also available for some personalised encounters,' the zoo wrote. 'These encounters are strictly monitored to ensure their enjoyment of them and their wellbeing.' Many Aussies online supported the zoo and its owners. 'Sending lots of love to your family. Your zoo is by far the best and unfortunately accidents happen,' one person wrote. 'We were at your zoo yesterday and can't stop talking about what a great day we had. All the best for a recovery,' another said. When contacted by Daily Mail Australia, Darling Downs Zoo declined an interview.

Haunting final moments of young father before he was shot and killed - as cops reveal disturbing link to 'contract crew' crime spree

Chilling footage captured the final moments of a young father who was shot and killed, with his death believed to be linked to a Victorian drug trafficking syndicate. Rich 'Dylan' Choup, 32, was reported missing in Sydney in July 2024, before his body was found in bushland at Lucas Heights in August. Police have been looking for those responsible and believe he may have been killed by a 'contract crew' responsible for two other violent incidents in the same week. The other two incidents include a man who was buried alive in an attempted murder, and a man who had his ear severed during a kidnapping. Detectives released on Monday CCTV footage linked to each of the incidents, including footage showing Mr Choup in an altercation days before he disappeared. Mr Choup was reported missing on July 29 last year and was last seen involved in a dispute in Cabramatta, south-west Sydney, on July 25. The young father had told friends he had a meeting and asked them to wait close by. CCTV showed Mr Choup meeting with a man on Railway Parade, who ordered him towards a car after slapping him at about 6.25pm. Both men were seen walking towards a grey Audi SQ2 before Mr Choup was reported missing four days later. On August 31, police were called to bushland off Heathcote Road in Lucas Heights after trail bike riders stumbled upon human remains which were later identified to be those of Mr Choup. A post-mortem discovered he had been fatally shot and the top of his right ear had been severed. Police also released footage of a white Lexus and white Audi RS3 from when Mr Choup was last seen. Two men in the CCTV, seen allegedly moving the vehicles before and after Mr Choup's disappearance, are of interest to police. The other two incidents linked to the 'contract crew' occurred days before the altercation between Mr Choup and the unidentified man at Cabramatta. Police said a 31-year-old man was kidnapped and tortured at Canley Vale, in south-west Sydney, before he was released the same day, on July 19. Part of his right ear was severed, however the man did not make a report to police. Officers conducted a search of a property where they believe the man had been held and discovered a box cutter at the premises. Police released CCTV of a dark-coloured Audi SQ2 and a white Volkswagen Golf at the intersection of Freeman Avenue and Sackville Street, around the time of the incident. Just two days later, a 23-year-old man walked into a Queensland petrol station covered in dirt and with a bullet wound to his head. He collapsed at the scene in Tamborine Street, Jimboomba, and was taken to hospital, where it was found he was shot through the eye and had a bullet in his brain. Queensland and NSW police think the man was shot and buried before he crawled out of a shallow grave to find help. CCTV footage showed a white Hyundai Getz at a roadhouse in Nambucca on the NSW Mid North Coast at about 5:30am on the day before the attempted murder. Four men were also seen on CCTV. One was believed to be the victim, which suggested he was picked up in NSW and driven to Queensland before being shot and buried. Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
