Honda conducts surprise reusable rocket test, aims spaceflight by 2029

TOKYO (Reuters) -Honda succeeded in a launch and landing test of its prototype reusable rocket on Tuesday, the Japanese company said in a surprise announcement, marking a milestone towards its 2029 goal of achieving a suborbital spaceflight.
Honda R&D, the research arm of Japan's second-biggest carmaker, successfully landed its 6.3-metre (20.6-foot) experimental reusable launch vehicle after reaching an altitude of 271 metres (889 feet) at its test facility in northern Japan's space town Taiki, according to the company.
While "no decisions have been made regarding commercialization of these rocket technologies, Honda will continue making progress in the fundamental research with a technology development goal of realizing technological capability to enable a suborbital launch by 2029," it said in a statement.
Honda in 2021 said it was studying space technologies such as reusable rockets, but it has not previously announced the details of the launch test. A suborbital launch may touch the verge of outer space but does not enter orbit.
Studying launch vehicles "has the potential to contribute more to people's daily lives by launching satellites with its own rockets, that could lead to various services that are also compatible with other Honda business," the company added.
Reusable launch vehicles have been the driver of emerging commercial space missions over the past decade, led by SpaceX's Falcon 9, while its U.S. rivals including Blue Origin and companies in China and Europe also have reusable rocket plans.
Tokyo-based startup Innovative Space Carrier last month said it will test-launch a prototype reusable rocket in the United States in December using an American engine.
Honda's rival Toyota, the world's biggest automaker by sales, earlier this year announced an investment by its research arm in Taiki-based rocket maker Interstellar Technologies to support mass production of launch vehicles.
Japan's government has established a multibillion-dollar space venture fund to subsidise private rockets, satellites and other missions, targeting to double its space industry's size to 8 trillion yen ($55.20 billion) by the early 2030s.

Gold demand in key Asian hubs improves amid price correction

By Rajendra Jadhav and Anmol Choubey (Reuters) -Physical gold demand in key Asian markets improved slightly this week as a pullback in prices sparked buying interest, though volatility kept some buyers cautious. Spot gold hit its lowest level in a month on Wednesday and was headed for third consecutive weekly loss. [GOL/] "This week, footfall was better than last week. Buyers were inquiring about price trends and making small purchases," said a Pune-based jeweller. Domestic gold prices were trading around 97,700 rupees per 10 grams on Friday after rising to 100,555 rupees last week. Discounts offered by Indian dealers narrowed to as much as $7 an ounce over official domestic prices, inclusive of 6% import and 3% sales levies, compared to up to $15 last week. Jewellers were keen to make purchases to replenish inventory after a correction in overseas prices, but a significant drop in the rupee offset the impact of the price fall to an extent, said a Mumbai-based bullion dealer with a private bank. India's gold consumption in 2025 is set to fall to a five-year low, as record-high prices are denting jewellery purchases, the World Gold Council said on Thursday. In China, dealers quoted gold in a wide range, between a discount of $4.2 and a premium of $12 per ounce above international rates. "China appears to slightly buy the dip in gold... trading volume for the physical proxy contract AU9999 on the Shanghai Gold Exchange has been on the rise (11 tons traded yesterday), reflecting a renewed interest in the metal," said Hugo Pascal, a precious metals trader at InProved. In Hong Kong gold was sold at par to a $1.50 premium, while Singapore prices ranged from par to a $1.40 premium. In Japan, bullion was sold at par to a premium of $0.60. "There was lots of demand to buy if the price dropped even slightly. Regardless of the Japan-U.S. trade deal, gold is being purchased as an asset class amid low interest rates," a Japan-based trader said. Lexus is Set To Cut Long-Running Models Within the Next Year

Lexus is Set To Cut Long-Running Models Within the Next Year originally appeared on Autoblog. Lexus hasn't initiated a significant change in its catalog in quite some time, but that familiarity is part of what draws people to the brand. The Japanese automaker is getting ready for a major shakeup, however, and is expected to discontinue several models in the coming months. The long-running Lexus IS and RC will be discontinued late this year, with production of the cars expected to end in November. While that's a bummer, especially the loss of Lexus' excellent V8 in those models, neither car is particularly modern or competitive in its class, with the IS having been on sale since 2014 without a generational update. Lexus' Japanese website states: 'Thank you for considering our vehicles. Production of the IS 500 / IS 350 / IS 300h (AWD) / IS 300 / RC 350 / RC 300h, and RC 300 will end in November 2025. Sales will end once orders reach the production numbers for November. Depending on when you consider purchasing a vehicle, some packages may no longer be available. Please contact your Lexus dealer for details.' The automaker is expected to release a next-generation IS as soon as 2026. Like the new ES, the IS will likely arrive with more electrified options, but the IS 500's iconic V8 probably won't return. The RC may not get a replacement, but spy shots and rumors point to a new sporty Lexus coupe in the near future. Lexus also confirmed the RC F Final Edition has sold out with the following message on its Japan site: "Thank you for your continued patronage of our products. We regret to inform you that the RC F 'Final Edition' has reached its limited number of 200 units and is now sold out. We would like to thank you for your continued patronage of the RC F. The RC 'Final Edition' will be on sale until production ends in November 2025.' Other departures include the LC, which is expected to end production next year, and the UX 300e will end later this year. Reports state that the UX 300h is next, with production ending in March of this probably makes it sound like Lexus is having a tough time of things, but it's more likely that the automaker has reached a natural stopping point for those models. The new ES sedan was just announced, offering compelling new powertrain options, and the all-electric RZ just received an update with more power and faster charging. That's in addition to the brand's wildly popular gas models, which include the new GX, RX, and others. Astronauts who missed out last year finally get chance in space

Astronauts sidelined for the past year by Boeing's Starliner trouble blasted off to the International Space Station on Friday, getting a lift from SpaceX. The US-Japanese-Russian crew of four rocketed from Nasa's Kennedy Space Centre. They will replace colleagues who launched to the space station in March as fill-ins for Nasa's two stuck astronauts. Their SpaceX capsule should reach the orbiting lab this weekend and stay for at least six months. Zena Cardman, a biologist and polar explorer who should have launched last year, was ditched along with another Nasa crewmate to make room for Starliner's star-crossed test pilots. The botched Starliner demo forced Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to switch to SpaceX to get back from the space station more than nine months after departing on what should have been a week-long trip. Ensuring their safe return 'meant stepping aside', Ms Cardman said before her launch. 'Every astronaut wants to be in space. None of us want to stay on the ground, but it's not about me,' said Ms Cardman, the flight commander. Even after launch, 'things can change at the last minute, so I'll count myself very fortunate when the hatch opens (to the space station)', she said. Nasa's Mike Fincke – Ms Cardman's co-pilot – was the back-up for Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams on Starliner, making those three still the only ones certified to fly it. Mr Fincke and Japan's Kimiya Yui, former military officers with previous spaceflight experience, were training for Starliner's second astronaut mission. With Starliner grounded until 2026, Nasa switched the two to the latest SpaceX flight. Rounding out the crew is Russia's Oleg Platonov. The former fighter pilot was pulled a few years ago from the Russian Soyuz flight line-up because of an undisclosed health issue that he said has since been resolved. To save money in light of tight budgets, Nasa is looking to increase its space station stays from six months to eight months, a move already adopted by Russia's space agency. SpaceX is close to certifying its Dragon capsules for longer flights, which means the newly launched crew could be up there until April.
