SFNL: The ‘honest chat' which sparked St Paul's McKinnon's unbeaten run
St Paul's McKinnon had lost two of its past three matches and an 'honest chat' was needed.
Now, the Bulldogs are flying and will be in search of a fifth consecutive Southern league Division 1 win this weekend as they look to consolidate their six-point buffer in second.
'We had the results that didn't go our way against Springvale Districts and Dingley (in round 4 and 6),' said St Paul's McKinnon coach Andy Scott.
'We had a really good honest chat as a leadership group and put a plan in place for the next five weeks which we've now been through to really set ourselves up, starting to drive what made us such a great team last year, get that back and find balance.
'We've had a lot of new players come into the squad at the start of the year and it's probably taken a tiny bit longer to gel but we're starting to gel now.
'We've worked out certain guys' positions and what works really well for them and what makes us a better team.
'Now I feel like we're starting that upward trajectory to where we want to get to, it's really positive for us.'
Scott added he felt his side had played 'really good footy' over the past four weeks, with wins coming against Cheltenham, Bentleigh, Narre Warren and East Brighton.
Last week, St Paul's McKinnon put the Vampires to the sword in the final term, piling on 47 points to run away with a 51-point victory.
'It was a good game, we're finding what our balance looks like,' Scott said.
'For three quarters it was a real tussle and we managed to break the game open in that last quarter and get the game on our terms and ran away with it which was good.
'We haven't really gotten reward like that for the year yet, to actually have a quarter to run out a game and put a team away was good reward for a real tough month.'
Brayden O'Toole bounced back from his first goalless match the week prior with a five-goal special, while 17-year-old Daniel Plotkin was also 'really impressive'.
'(O'Toole) and I had a chat and we didn't feel his game was that different to the week prior where he didn't actually kick a goal,' Scott added.
'We've got such a strong forward line that you never know which one's gonna get you, it was his turn on the weekend to get reward for effort and he's been outstanding.'
Matthew Kreymborg has also continued his strong run of form while Matthew O'Brien and Kye Beveridge were also among the best.
The Bulldogs attention will now turn to Murrumbeena in a 4.45pm twilight clash at Murrumbeena Park on Saturday.

Canterbury hooker Reed Mahoney to join Cowboys on long-term deal
Canterbury hooker Reed Mahoney has agreed to a long-term deal to join the North Queensland Cowboys from next season. Mahoney will see out the year at the Bulldogs before joining the Cowboys in 2026. The Bulldogs have agreed to release Mahoney from the final year of his contract after giving him permission to test the market a couple of months ago. The Bulldogs have been open to releasing Mahoney as they begin to juggle their salary cap following two impressive seasons under coach Cameron Ciraldo. Mahoney joined the club in 2023 from Parramatta. He has come from the field twice recently to make way for Lachlan Galvin in the halves, forcing Toby Sexton into the No.9 role. Mahoney will join the Cowboys as a replacement for the Sydney Roosters-bound Reece Robson. Robson agreed to a deal with the Roosters earlier this year and will join the Tricolours as a replacement for Brandon Smith. The Cowboys showed interest in Tallyn Da Silva and Broncos hooker Cory Paix. They have been in negotiations with Mahoney for a couple of months and this week landed his services.

NRL 2025: Cameron Ciraldo has to work out Lachlan Galvin's role after Bulldogs loss
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. A frustrated Cameron Ciraldo admits his side hasn't reached its attacking potential yet this season, with the Bulldogs coach disappointed in how his team handled the second half on Friday night as the Broncos stormed home to beat them 22-18. The Bulldogs led 18-0 in the second half but conceded the final four tries as a new-look backline failed to fire the premiership fancies with the game on the line. All eyes were on mid-season recruit Lachlan Galvin who was initially named on the bench but started at five-eighth alongside Toby Sexton, with Matt Burton switching to centre given they had Stephen Crichton and Jacob Kiraz away on Origin duty. Galvin set up a try with his right boot but made two errors and didn't gel well with his teammates on the left edge in what was his second start since leaving the Wests Tigers. Canterbury's attack is an easy focus given they were leading the league before Galvin arrived, with the next two months set to determine what their spine looks like heading into the finals. Lachlan Galvin had a mixed night as questions remain over how best to use him. Picture:'I don't think our attack has reached its potential all year, so we're searching for that, as most clubs are,' Ciraldo said. 'We're searching for what works. We've had a lot of turnover with different back-rowers and things like that so we're still searching. 'We've got nine or 10 weeks to go to figure that out, but you've got to learn your lessons quickly. We didn't learn ours from last week and take those into tonight.' While the halves conundrum will dominate the headlines for the rest of the season, Ciraldo doesn't have to worry about being asked questions about Sexton's future after the halfback signed a deal to play for Catalans. Sexton joined the club midway through the 2023 season and has done a fine job in the halves, but his role became a major talking point once Galvin signed. 'He came and saw me last night (Thursday) and told me about it,' Ciraldo said. 'It's really good for him and his family and I'm stoked for him because he's worked really hard. Toby Sexton will head to the Super League next season. Picture:'He was playing for Tweed Heads a couple of years ago and came down to the Bulldogs to get an opportunity. 'He had to bide his time at the start and then got his opportunity, and he's done really well. 'It's a great opportunity for him over there, but he was really clear that he's not thinking about that right now. He's thinking about how we get better at the back end of the season, and that's what we're all thinking.' Ciraldo has a week to decide who he should pick in the halves for their next game, with the coach disappointed in his side's second-half performance after failing to learn lessons from last week's loss to Penrith. 'I haven't thought too far past that game. We've got to go back and review that,' he said. 'There was a lot to like about what we did in the first half, but there are some lessons there. I'm filthy that we didn't learn our lessons from last week. 'We had to stand up and be better this week than what we were last week in those areas that we practised all week, but we weren't. 'I thought we were trying to force it too much. 'I thought the Broncos were defending really well at the start of the second half and we earned some possession, but we had to keep asking questions and play the field position game. 'We didn't, we tried to force it and it probably played into their hands.'
