U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to 'substantially' raise tariffs on goods imported from India with the excuse that India bought and resold Russian oil.
'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Indian goods imported into the United States will be subject to a 25 percent tariff starting Aug. 7, according to an executive order signed by Trump on July 31.
Besides the 25 percent tariff, Trump had earlier said he would impose a penalty for India's purchase of Russian oil, without elaborating on details.
In early April, Trump announced 26 percent reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods in addition to the 10 percent baseline tariffs, but he then paused the imposition of such tariffs.
In response to Trump's new threat, India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that 'the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable,' and that India's oil imports are meant to 'ensure predictable and affordable energy costs' for Indian consumers.
'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' according to the statement on the ministry's website.
The U.S. goods trade deficit with India was 45.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, up 5.9 percent from 2023, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
Many countries have voiced strong opposition to the recent U.S. tariff measures.

South Korea to aid firms facing higher US tariffs amid trade deal

SEOUL: South Korea will prepare measures to help companies cope with higher U.S. tariffs and expand into new markets, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday, as it kicked off a task force to prepare the new administration's economic policy plans. On the domestic front, the government will come up with measures to boost short-term demand, as well as financial support for mid- to long-term technology development to enhance market competitiveness, it said in a statement. South Korea reached a trade deal with the U.S. last week, just days before President Donald Trump's threatened 25% tariff rate was due to come in on its exports to the United States. The trade deal set tariffs on exports from the Asian country at 15%, still higher than a baseline 10% rate and the near zero tariffs for exports under a Korea-U.S. free trade agreement. Still, topics left unresolved by the deal provide scope for more disputes as the two countries prepare for a summit between Trump and new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in the coming weeks. Trump may use the summit to try to squeeze more concessions on areas such as defence costs and corporate investments, left out of the deal, while non-tariff barriers and currency could prove thorny issues, experts said. South Korea's Finance Ministry, however, sought to give a positive spin on the agreement. The deal reduced uncertainty over the trade environment, while a $350 billion investment package included in the deal will provide new business opportunities for companies, deepen economic cooperation between the two countries, and contribute to a more stable supply chain, the ministry said. The administration of President Lee also plans to prepare policy measures to foster new industries, such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and 'K-contents' and include them in economic growth strategies and budget plans due to be announced later this month. K-contents refers to a range of cultural and entertainment goods produced by the country ranging from K-pop to Korean dramas that have boomed globally. The ministry vowed to bring regulatory improvements to vitalise business activity, as it kicked off a meeting with the country's major business groups. Asia's fourth-largest economy grew in the second quarter at the fastest pace in more than a year on rebounding consumer spending and a surge in technology exports, but still faces headwinds from slowing global trade amid the sweeping tariffs. The International Monetary Fund last week raised its outlook for most advanced and emerging economies this year based on developments around U.S. tariff negotiations, but South Korea was among the exceptions, with its 2025 growth forecast revised down to 0.8% from 1.0%. - Reuters

Trump praises Sydney Sweeney ad, American Eagle shares jump most since 2000

US President Donald Trump says that American Eagle's recent marketing blitz with actress Sydney Sweeney is the 'HOTTEST ad out there'. Photos: AP, American Eagle/Instagram American Eagle Outfitters shares jumped the most since 2000 on Aug 4 after United States President Donald Trump touted the company's ads – pushing the retailer's stock into meme stock territory. The shares spiked 24% on Aug 4 after Trump said in a social media post that American Eagle's recent marketing blitz with American actress Sydney Sweeney, 27, is the 'HOTTEST ad out there.' He said American Eagle jeans are 'flying off the shelves'. It is not yet clear whether the ad campaign – which controversially celebrates Sweeney's genetic traits as well as her jeans – is actually convincing shoppers to buy the company's apparel. Analysts say the real test will be how American Eagle performs during the crucial back-to-school season as consumers begin to stock up on jeans and other autumn essentials. So while Trump's comments on Aug 4 do not reveal any new information about the company's performance, they do add to the hype around American Eagle shares. And that has drawn investors betting on the hype itself – a telltale sign of a meme stock. 'What are meme stocks for the most part? Individual investors chasing after the hottest stock,' said Matt Maley, chief market strategy at Miller Tabak & Co. The move on Aug 4 pared the stock's year-to-date decline to 20%. The company has been battered by sluggish demand and last quarter, it registered a US$75 million charge related to a writedown of its spring and summer merchandise. Some traders who drove up the shares on Aug 4 are probably betting that the spotlight on the company will translate into greater sales. But that alone does not explain the magnitude of the share move, Maley said, adding that American Eagle executives should seize on the interest by, for example, issuing more shares. Meme stock darlings AMC Entertainment Holdings and GameStop have done this in the past. Representatives for American Eagle did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'In the short term, traders are very adept at chasing hype,' said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. 'If one believes that the more this is talked about, the better it is for the stock, then that certainly is a boon.' 'Whether or not that translates into more or fewer people buying the actual products' after Mr Trump weighed in will not be clear for 'days, weeks or quarters', Sosnick added. The interest in American Eagle is likely to continue, even if there is not another major precipitating event like a social media post by the US president. 'The momentum is there,' Maley said. 'Today's marketplace with algorithmic trading, not only does it create buyers, but it eliminates sellers.' While Sweeney, a sought-after face for brands, has provided a pop for stocks in the past, those gains have not always endured. A year ago, footwear company Crocs disclosed Sweeney as a global spokesperson for its Heydude line. The stock rose 4.1% on the day of the announcement, but since then, shares are down nearly 30% per cent. – Bloomberg

Bengaluru FC stops salaries with India's top league ISL in limbo

BENGALURU: Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC have stopped paying the salaries of their first team's players and staff amid growing uncertainty over future of the top-flight league. In a statement on Monday, the 2018-19 ISL champions said they made the decision "in view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season". "Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season," Bengaluru added. "However, the lack of clarity on the league's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step." The ISL was put on hold after contract renewal talks between the country's football federation (AIFF) and their commercial partners, Reliance-led Football Sports Development Ltd (FSDL), stalled. Talks to renew the 2010 agreement came to a halt after India's Supreme Court asked the AIFF not to renew the deal with FSDL until it had issued an order over a separate case to implement a new constitution for the federation. "The future and well-being of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution... We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly," Bengaluru said. The AIFF and the ISL did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. According to reports in Indian media, eight ISL clubs will meet the AIFF this week to discuss the league's future. Bengaluru, which employs India's all-time leading goalscorer Sunil Chhetri, said its youth teams would not be affected by the salary suspension.
