Young Antonelli repays Wolff's trust with podium finish

Young Antonelli repays Wolff's trust with podium finish

Hindustan Times16-06-2025

New Delhi: The Montreal crowd applauded as Mercedes driver George Russell took the chequered flag at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, his first win of the season. The ovation got louder as Red Bull ace and four-time world champion Max Verstappen finished second. But the loudest and most emotional reaction of the day was reserved for a certain Andrea Kimi Antonelli, better known by his middle name, who achieved the maiden podium of his career. At 18 years and 294 days, the Italian became the third youngest podium finisher in the history of Formula 1, behind Verstappen and Lance Stroll.
An extremely affable character, the teenager is loved by most in the Mercedes paddock due to his humility, wit and humorous personality. But on track, he is as fast as they come. Experts questioned Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff's decision when he decided to bring on board the youngster with very little formula racing experience.
After racing in Formula 4 for a couple of seasons, Antonelli skipped F3 to directly race in Formula 2 where he finished a respectable sixth last season. But to pick him in a multiple championship winning team, that too to fill in the giant shoes of Lewis Hamilton was a humongous task.
But having watched Antonelli in the junior series, Wolff trusted his instinct and the Italian's racing skill. And Antonelli hasn't disappointed, repaying the faith in his maiden F1 season.
At 18 years and 202 days, the Bolognese became the third youngest to race in F1 at the season opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in March, behind Verstappen and Stroll, finishing a mighty fourth in his debut race.
At the Japanese Grand Prix in April, he became the youngest driver to set a fastest lap at 18 years and 225 days when his radio communication with his engineer Peter Bonnington — famous as Hamilton's race engineer 'Bono' went viral on social media. Told he was the fastest man on the track, Antonelli had responded with, 'I'm giving it everything, mate' to which Bono has replied, 'Good lad.'
Antonelli showed his pace in the first six races of the season, coming close to the podium despite his lack of experience. But at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Antonelli's time had finally arrived after he made a brilliant and opportunistic move on championship leader Oscar Piastri to climb up to third from fourth and then put reigning world champion Verstappen under pressure for second place on an overtake friendly circuit.
He was most impressive in the latter stages of the race defending against the rampaging McLarens of Piastri and Lando Norris, both on fresher tyres, making strategic moves over the backmarkers to create a gap behind him. His fantastic race craft finally saw Antonelli come of age, earning him a podium at the pinnacle of the sport especially after three races without points — two of which were due to mechanical issues.
'It was so stressful for me. But I am super happy! I had a good start. I managed to jump into P3 and I just stayed up there at the front. The last stint, I pushed a bit too hard behind Max and I killed a bit of the front left tyre and then I struggled a bit at the end,' said a beaming Antonelli, waving to the big crowd which was chanting 'Kimi, Kimi'.
'I'm really happy to bring the podium home for the team,' added Antonelli, who also became the first Italian driver since Jarno Trulli in 2009 to finish on the F1 podium.
For a driver who passed his driving license test earlier this year, Antonelli has displayed immense maturity in the 10 Grands Prix this season yet and not just on Sunday. The result also helped Mercedes clinch their first double podium since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November when the pair of Russell and Hamilton ended P1 and P2.
'I knew Kimi coming up through the karting ranks, people were already saying great things, so I was keeping an eye on him. What's impressive is he's naturally quick. What I like is his level-headed, calm approach,' said Verstappen, who is the youngest to win a race. 'Those are great qualities to have. I was never in doubt that the podium would come this year. I'm very happy that it happened for him. It gives you more confidence. It's a nice boost. And it will only get better.'
What was once Wolff's belief is slowly translating into reality with the Mercedes rookie due for many podiums if he keeps driving like this.

Mercedes AMG to phase out 4 cylinder plug-in hybrids: Report

The Mercedes AMG C 63 S E-Performance gets hybrid technology taken from the company's F1 division Check Offers Mercedes-AMG is to phase out its contentious four-cylinder plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains deployed in its new C 63 and GLC 63 models. The step represents a strategic reversal as the performance division of Mercedes-Benz responds to customer criticism and the impending expense of having to adapt these sophisticated motors to achieve compliance with tougher Euro 7 emissions rules. Four cylinder hybrid strategy fails The plug-in hybrid setup in the C 63 S E Performance and its SUV sibling, the GLC 63, was intended as a technological leap—offering a complex, high-output 2.0-litre turbocharged engine paired with electric assistance for a combined 671 bhp. Nonetheless, while it has its performance credentials, the powertrain never struck a chord with traditional AMG purchasers, who were in large part pining for an unfiltered V8 experience. Also Read : Mercedes-AMG GT 63 and GT 63 PRO launched at ₹ 3 crore. Bookings open A senior AMG executive conceded in a report by Autocar that though the four-cylinder hybrid is one of the most sophisticated systems ever produced by the company, it hasn't achieved success on the customer acceptance front. "Technically brilliant, but misunderstood" was the verdict, leading the brand to reconsider its engine roadmap. Inline six and V8 powertrains to comeback In a return to its roots, AMG is now expected to reintroduce inline six-cylinder and V8 powertrains in future performance models. These will be electrified through 48V mild-hybrid or full-hybrid systems to balance performance with emissions compliance. These new configurations will likely appear in next-generation models aligned with the rollout of Euro 7 standards later this decade. AMG's 3.0-litre inline-six engine, currently found in the CLE 53 and E 53, is expected to form the backbone of future 43- and 53-badged cars, replacing the four-cylinder units used in the C 43 and SL 43. Meanwhile, a new V8 is reportedly in development for top-tier AMG variants such as the anticipated CLE 63. Also Read : Mercedes-Benz rethinks EV plans, will retain combustion engines due to slower adoption Small AMG cars to go electric or disappear While the larger AMG offerings shift back to bigger engines, the future of smaller performance models looks electric—or uncertain. The A 45 hot hatch will not be replaced, and the CLA 45's successor is expected to be an all-electric performance sedan. The 2.0-litre hand-built four-cylinder engine, once a point of pride for AMG, will be confined to standard models like the CLA, GLA, and GLB, but not in AMG form. The SL43, which uses this engine, may also transition to either a six-cylinder or a detuned version of the 4.0-litre V8 found in the SL 55 and SL 63 roadsters. No immediate timeline Although a specific timeline for the transition hasn't been confirmed, industry insiders suggest that the change will coincide with the arrival of Euro 7 norms or the next generation of C and GLC Class models. In the meantime, the current four-cylinder hybrids will continue to be sold, despite their limited commercial success. Mercedes-AMG's decision signals a strategic recalibration: one that balances future regulatory demands with the emotional appeal that has traditionally defined its performance cars. The V8 may not roar as widely as before, but its return in key models shows that AMG isn't ready to let go of its legacy just yet. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2024, Best SUVs in India. SPMEPCI scheme to attract foreign players to invest, bring EV portfolio to India: Mercedes-Benz India CEO

Mercedes-Benz sees a boost to the Indian electric vehicle industry with the SPMEPCI. (AP) Notify me The Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) will attract new foreign auto manufacturers to invest and bring their electric vehicle portfolio to the country, believes Mercedes-Benz India CEO and Managing Director Santosh Iyer. The German automaker that has been leading the electric vehicle segment in the Indian luxury car market with a wide range of products has introduced two new sports cars in the country, the AMG GT 63 4MATIC and GT 63 PRO 4MATIC Coupe, priced at ₹ 3 crore (ex-showroom) and ₹ 3.65 crore (ex-showroom), respectively. Speaking to PTI about the SPMEPCI, Iyer said that it is a great scheme and a great initiative by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI). "I think it's a great scheme and a great initiative by the Ministry for Heavy Industries (MHI) to really come up with such a forward-looking scheme. But this scheme is primarily for new entrants who have not come into India," Iyer reportedly said. Also Read : Upcoming cars in India Under the SPMEPCI, automakers will be permitted to import up to 8,000 electric vehicles in India at a reduced duty rate of 15 per cent compared to the current 70-100 per cent, provided they commit to investing ₹ 4,150 crore in the local EV manufacturing industry. Speaking about Mercedes-Benz's investments in India, Iyer said that the company has invested ₹ 3,000 crore in the OEM's Chakan plant near Pune. 'Today, we are already producing two car models locally at this plant, much before the announcement of the scheme," he further said, while also adding, 'But I think this scheme will surely attract newer players, who are not yet in India, to invest and come with their electric cars." Meanwhile, speaking about the ongoing rare earth magnet crisis, which has hit the panic button in the Indian industry and is fuelling concerns about a possible shutdown in the coming months due to the unavailability of the critical component, Iyer said that in today's time, disruptions happen due to geopolitical issues or supply chain issues, but the company's colleagues involved in the backend are able to manage it quite well. "As of now, we have no disruption in India because of any of these issues," Iyer asserted. Mercedes-Benz cars in India to be dearer by 1.5% in September, third price hike in 2025

Mercedes-Benz cars to go dearer again in September 2025, for the third time in this calendar year. Check Offers Mercedes-Benz India is looking at another price hike, which will be enforced in September 2025. The German luxury car manufacturer that just launched two sports cars in India, namely the AMG GT 63 4MATIC and GT 63 PRO 4MATIC Coupe, priced at ₹ 3 crore (ex-showroom) and ₹ 3.65 crore (ex-showroom), respectively; has revealed that the OEM is about to enforce another price hike for its India passenger vehicle portfolio. Speaking to PTI, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO at Mercedes-Benz India, said that adverse fluctuations of the Euro against the Rupee are impacting the OEM's price hike decisions. This is going to be the third price hike in 2025. Earlier this year, in January and June, Mercedes-Benz increased the price of its cars, each time by 1.5 per cent. Also Read : Upcoming cars in India The automaker has claimed that it had faced a 13 per cent increase in cost over the past year as the Rupee continued to weaken against the Euro, inflating the cost of imported components. The Indian arm of the German luxury carmaker imports about 70 per cent of its components. "If you see, yesterday night, one Euro was equal to ₹ 9,9 and it is the first time that the Euro has breached the ₹ 98 mark. We had priced our cars when one Euro was at ₹ 89-90. With Euro going up, even though we localise more than 30 per cent of our cars, 70 per cent of the cars still have European content and when the EURO goes up against Rupee, the price of the Mercedes-Benz range of cars will go up," Iyer said, while also adding, "The third one (increase in price) equal to 1.5 per cent will come in September, because we cannot pass this in one go and we are doing it in phase wise," he said. Mercedes-Benz is hopeful of upbat retail sales Despite the proposed price hike for its cars, the luxury car manufacturer sounded optimistic on retail sales with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announcing interest rate cuts twice this year. "We have a non-banking finance company, Mercedes-Benz Finance, and this arm has also reduced the interest rates. About 80 per cent of our cars are financed, and today, if you look at June, the price of Mercedes-Benz cars has gone up. But the EMIs remain the same," he said. Iyer added that the interest rate cuts announced by the Reserve Bank are helping the sales of the Mercedes-Benz range of cars. He also said that 2025 is not an easy year from a geo-political macro economy environment, and therefore, the company wants to be a big conservative when it comes to demand and forecasts. "Right now, we had an excellent May in terms of sales, and June also seems to be strong and hopefully, during the festive period, we will bring back even more cheer in terms of sales for his company," Iyer said.
