Air India discontinues full-service carrier operation at Manipur's Imphal Airport
The decision was part of the airline's "long-standing and pre-planned" strategy, they said.
"It is part of a long-standing, pre-planned strategic decision by the airline, and is in no way related to any recent incident," one of the airport officials said.
Altogether, 241 people on board Air India's London-bound AI 171 flight were killed when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport on June 12.
"The move is part of a broader strategic realignment by the Tata Group, which owns the airline. Air India Express, the group's low-cost subsidiary, will continue its operations at Imphal, signalling a shift in service model but ensuring continued air connectivity," said another official of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) here.
The Air India authorities could not be contacted for comment.
Air India has a cherished history in the region, connecting Imphal to major cities across the country, the officials added.

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) A Mumbai-bound Air India Express plane, with around 160 passengers onboard, aborted takeoff due to a technical snag at the Delhi airport on Wednesday evening, according to a source. An Air India Express spokesperson said the crew of one of our flights from Delhi elected to reject takeoff prioritising safety following a minor technical issue. The source said that the pilot decided to abort takeoff as there was a glitch with the screens displaying the speed parameters in the cockpit. The spokesperson said that passengers were deboarded and accommodated in an alternative aircraft, which has departed for Mumbai. 'We regret the inconvenience while reiterating that safety remains paramount in all our operations," the spokesperson said in a statement. Ahmedabad-Diu IndiGo flight cancelled due to ‘technical snag' shortly before take-off
A short haul Diu-bound IndiGo flight was cancelled shortly before its take-off from Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning owing to a 'technical snag', airline officials said. IndiGo flight 6E 7966, which was scheduled to fly from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad to Diu Airport in the Union Territory, was cancelled at the last minute after the pilot 'called the flight off' having noticed a 'technical issue'. While an 'engine fire' was widely reported as the cause for the flight being called off, a statement by the airline, however, makes no mention of it. Sources at the Ahmedabad airport have also rejected such claims. A statement released by the airline said, 'A technical snag indication was noticed just before take-off on IndiGo flight 6E 7966 operating from Ahmedabad to Diu on 23 July 2025. Following the standard operating procedure, the pilots informed the authorities and returned the aircraft to the bay. The aircraft will undergo necessary checks and maintenance before resuming operations. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers and are making all efforts to minimize it by offering them refreshments, accommodation in the next available flight or full refund against cancellation, as per their preference. As always, safety of our customers and crew remains the top priority at IndiGo.' Sources at the airport, when asked if there had been a fire in the aircraft which is an ATR-72 Turboprop, and about the emergency measures taken for the same and the impact on other flights, said that there was no fire in the engine. A source said, 'The aircraft taxied onto the runway for take-off. However, during the pre-flight checks, the pilot appears to have found a technical problem and so he informed the ATC and returned the aircraft to its bay.' While the Ahmedabad airport did not issue a formal statement, sources confirmed that no other flights were affected due to the incident.

International air travel sees 5 per cent surge in May 2025; Domestic traffic also grow
NEW DELHI: Air passenger traffic in the country continues its growth trajectory month-on-month, with a 3 per cent increase in overall passengers in May 2025 compared to May 2024. Data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) reveals a higher demand for international travel, with a 5% increase recorded during the same period. The Air Traffic Report for May, made public by AAI, reveals that 6.76 million passengers flew abroad compared to 6.44 million last year. They form part of the 35.38 million who travelled in May 2025, compared to 34.34 million in May 2024. Air Traffic Movements (flight arrivals and departures) recorded a 5.9 per cent increase, with 2.78 crore movements in May this year compared to 2.63 crore in May last year. A total of 67,62,343 people opted to fly abroad in May 2025, versus 64,41,392 during the same month last year. Relatively smaller airports, compared to the top five, are showing a significant surge in demand for international travel. Goa recorded a nearly 300 per cent surge in international flyers, with 26,211 passengers in May 2025 compared to May 2024. In terms of percentage, Pune followed with a high growth of 85 per cent (34,388 flyers) during the same period. Coimbatore Airport, with 28,809 flyers, registered a 48.4 per cent increase in patronage over the previous year. Mangaluru and Surat saw a 35.1 per cent increase, with 62,159 and 18,790 flyers respectively in May this year. Similarly, Kannur Airport, with 1,00,993 international flyers, and Nagpur, with 10,471 flyers, each recorded a 20.7 per cent increase over their previous figures. The boom in international travel from Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) continued, with 6,05,742 flyers in May this year, up by a significant 25 per cent over the same month last year. In comparison, other major airports like Mumbai (13,42,584 flyers) and Delhi (17,04,549 flyers) recorded single-digit growths of 2.6 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively, over their May 2024 figures. Hyderabad recorded a healthy 11.2 per cent increase with 4,52,243 flyers. Domestic front data On the domestic front as well, relatively smaller airports showed strong growth in May 2025 over May 2024. Jharsuguda recorded 40,808 flyers (a 92.2% increase), Jabalpur 46,924 flyers (90.3%), Gorakhpur 1,00,404 flyers (87.5%), Shivamogga 14,104 flyers (80.6%), Agra 22,521 flyers (77.2%), Kanpur 35,720 flyers (58%), Tirupati 1,06,200 flyers (a 53.7% increase), Rajahmundry 54,963 flyers (50.5%), Tiruchirappalli 74,343 flyers (46.5%), Kannur 46,923 flyers (49.6%), Patna 4,07,993 flyers (34.6%), and Bhuj 18,861 flyers (30.8%).
