"They're trying to take more areas, but police are there, making sure that doesn't happen,' Lionel Lazarre, deputy spokesman for Haiti's National Police, told a press conference.
He said police have new plans to fight gangs that already control 85% of Haiti's capital, but declined to provide details, citing safety reasons. Lazarre noted that police recently seized 10,000 bullets, weapons and drugs from a minibus in the town of Mirebalais, northeast of Port-au-Prince. He said two of the four people carrying the ammunition were lynched by a mob on Sunday, while the others escaped.
The latest attacks come days after William O'Neill, the UN's human rights expert on Haiti, visited the troubled Caribbean country. "The risk of the capital falling under gang control is palpable," O'Neill said Tuesday, even as Haitian police work with a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police to help quell gang violence. O'Neill and others have called for a reinforcement of the mission, which the U.S. has said lacks funding and personnel. Last year, more than 5,600 people were reported killed across Haiti. Gang violence has left more than one million homeless in recent years.

France's first couple sue Candace Owens for defamation over claim Brigitte Macron is a man
PARIS, July 24, (AP): A lawyer for France's first couple said they'll be seeking "substantial' damages from U.S. conservative influencer Candace Owens if she persists with claims that President Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte, is a man. The lawyer, Tom Clare, said in an interview with CNN that a defamation suit filed Wednesday for the Macrons in a Delaware court was "really a last resort' after a fruitless yearlong effort to engage with Owens and requests that she "do the right thing: tell the truth, stop spreading these lies." "Each time we've done that, she mocked the Macrons, she mocked our efforts to set the record straight," Clare said. "Enough is enough, it was time to hold her accountable." The Macrons have been married since 2007, and Emmanuel Macron has been France's president since 2017. In a YouTube video, Owens called the suit an "obvious and desperate public relations strategy,' and said the first lady is "a very goofy man.' Owens is a right-leaning political commentator whose YouTube channel has about 4.5 million subscribers. Thailand and Cambodia exchange fire in clashes that kill at least 9 civilians
BANGKOK, July 24, (AP): Thailand and Cambodia exchanged fire on their border Thursday in a sharp escalation of their conflict that killed at least nine civilians. Both nations accused each other of starting the military clashes and have downgraded their diplomatic relations since Wednesday. Thailand also sealed all land border crossings with Cambodia. Relations between the Southeast Asian neighbors have deteriorated sharply since an armed confrontation in May that killed a Cambodian soldier. Nationalist passions on both sides have further inflamed the situation. The Thai army said the most casualties occurred in Si Sa Ket province, where six people were killed after shots were fired at a gas station. At least 14 people were injured in three border provinces. The Thai army said it launched airstrikes Thursday on ground military targets in Cambodia, while the Cambodian Defense Ministry said the Thai jets dropped bombs on a road near the ancient Preah Vihear temple.
