Gangs unleash new attack on Haiti's capital as police vow to hold them back
Meanwhile, cries for help emerged on social media for a group of priests trapped inside a church in the Carrefour-Feuilles neighborhood, which endured much of the attack by the Viv Ansanm gang coalition that began late Tuesday. "They're trying to take more areas, but police are there, making sure that doesn't happen,' Lionel Lazarre, deputy spokesman for Haiti's National Police, told a press conference.
He said police have new plans to fight gangs that already control 85% of Haiti's capital, but declined to provide details, citing safety reasons. Lazarre noted that police recently seized 10,000 bullets, weapons and drugs from a minibus in the town of Mirebalais, northeast of Port-au-Prince. He said two of the four people carrying the ammunition were lynched by a mob on Sunday, while the others escaped.
The latest attacks come days after William O'Neill, the UN's human rights expert on Haiti, visited the troubled Caribbean country. "The risk of the capital falling under gang control is palpable," O'Neill said Tuesday, even as Haitian police work with a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police to help quell gang violence. O'Neill and others have called for a reinforcement of the mission, which the U.S. has said lacks funding and personnel. Last year, more than 5,600 people were reported killed across Haiti. Gang violence has left more than one million homeless in recent years.

Hulk Hogan, icon in professional wrestling, dies at age 71
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Hulk Hogan, the mustachioed, headscarf-wearing icon in the world of professional wrestling, has died at the age of 71, Florida police and WWE said Thursday. In Clearwater, Florida, authorities responded to a call Thursday morning about a cardiac arrest. Hogan was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said in a statement on Facebook. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, was perhaps the biggest star in WWE's long history. He was the main draw for the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was a fixture for years, facing everyone from Andre The Giant and Randy Savage to The Rock and even company chairman Vince McMahon. He won at least six WWE championships and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2016, a Florida jury awarded Hogan $115 million in his sex tape lawsuit against Gawker Media and then added $25 million in punitive damages. Hogan sued after Gawker in 2012 posted a video of him having sex with his former best friend's wife. He contended the post violated his privacy. Hogan smiled and wore black throughout the three-week trial. 'Everywhere I show up, people treat me like I'm still the champ,' he said of the support from fans. WWE posted a note on X saying it was saddened to learn about Hogan's death. 'One of pop culture's most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan's family, friends, and fans,' it said.

France's first couple sue Candace Owens for defamation over claim Brigitte Macron is a man
PARIS, July 24, (AP): A lawyer for France's first couple said they'll be seeking "substantial' damages from U.S. conservative influencer Candace Owens if she persists with claims that President Emmanuel Macron's wife, Brigitte, is a man. The lawyer, Tom Clare, said in an interview with CNN that a defamation suit filed Wednesday for the Macrons in a Delaware court was "really a last resort' after a fruitless yearlong effort to engage with Owens and requests that she "do the right thing: tell the truth, stop spreading these lies." "Each time we've done that, she mocked the Macrons, she mocked our efforts to set the record straight," Clare said. "Enough is enough, it was time to hold her accountable." The Macrons have been married since 2007, and Emmanuel Macron has been France's president since 2017. In a YouTube video, Owens called the suit an "obvious and desperate public relations strategy,' and said the first lady is "a very goofy man.' Owens is a right-leaning political commentator whose YouTube channel has about 4.5 million subscribers. In 2024, she was denied a visa from New Zealand and Australia, citing remarks in which she denied Nazi medical experimentation on Jews in concentration camps during World War II. The 219-page complaint against Owens lays out "extensive evidence' that Brigitte Macron "was born a woman, she's always been a woman," the couple's attorney said. "We'll put forward our damage claim at trial, but if she continues to double down between now and the time of trial, it will be a substantial award," he said. In Paris, the presidential office had no immediate comment. In France, too, the presidential couple has for years been dogged by conspiracy theories that Brigitte was born as a man named Jean-Michel Trogneux, who supposedly then took the name Brigitte as a transgender woman. Jean-Michel Trogneux is, in fact, Brigitte's brother. Last September, Brigitte and Jean-Michel Trogneux won a defamation suit against two women who were sentenced by a Paris court to fines and damages for spreading claims about the first lady online. A Paris appeals court overturned the ruling earlier this month. Brigitte and her brother have since turned to France's highest court to appeal that decision, according to French media. The Macrons first met at the high school where he was a student and she was a teacher. Brigitte Macron was then Brigitte Auzière, a married mother of three children. Macron, 47, is serving his second and last term as president. The first lady celebrated her 72nd birthday in April. Macron moved to Paris for his last year of high school, but promised to marry Brigitte. She later moved to the French capital to join him and divorced before they finally married. Their relationship came under the spotlight in May when video images showed Brigitte pushing her husband away with both hands on his face before they disembarked from a plane on a tour of Southeast Asia. Macron later dismissed the incident as play-fighting, telling reporters that "we are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife,' and that it had been overblown into "a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.'

Thailand and Cambodia exchange fire in clashes that kill at least 9 civilians
BANGKOK, July 24, (AP): Thailand and Cambodia exchanged fire on their border Thursday in a sharp escalation of their conflict that killed at least nine civilians. Both nations accused each other of starting the military clashes and have downgraded their diplomatic relations since Wednesday. Thailand also sealed all land border crossings with Cambodia. Relations between the Southeast Asian neighbors have deteriorated sharply since an armed confrontation in May that killed a Cambodian soldier. Nationalist passions on both sides have further inflamed the situation. The Thai army said the most casualties occurred in Si Sa Ket province, where six people were killed after shots were fired at a gas station. At least 14 people were injured in three border provinces. The Thai army said it launched airstrikes Thursday on ground military targets in Cambodia, while the Cambodian Defense Ministry said the Thai jets dropped bombs on a road near the ancient Preah Vihear temple. Clashes are ongoing in at least six areas along the border, Thai Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said. The first clash Thursday morning happened in an area near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple along the border of Thailand's Surin province and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province. A livestream video from Thailand's side showed people running from their homes and hiding in a concrete bunker Thursday morning as explosions sounded. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Cambodia has attacked both military and non-military sites in Thailand, including a hospital. Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet said his country has always maintained a position of peaceful resolution of problems, but 'we have no choice but to respond with armed force against armed aggression.' Earlier Thursday, Cambodia said it was downgrading diplomatic relations with Thailand to their lowest level, expelling the Thai ambassador and recalling all Cambodian staff from its embassy in Bangkok. That was in response to Thailand withdrawing its ambassador and expelling the Cambodian ambassador Wednesday to protest a land mine blast that wounded five Thai soldiers.
