Station cleaning: Railway Board asks DRMs to identify 10 areas which need special attention

Noting that railway station cleanliness is paramount to sustained passenger satisfaction, the Railway Board has issued an order to all Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs), asking them to identify 10 distinct areas which need directed attention in cleaning works at each station. The station cleaning work is being monitored on a day-to-day basis through the Board's 'Swachh Station' WhatsApp group. 'Identification of 10 such areas and improvement thereafter will be a dynamic process. New such areas will need to be identified at a suitable periodicity, say 7-10 days for further attention. Evidence (picture/video) of these improvements must be uploaded by the concerned station/division to the respective user group on the station cleaning daily, without fail, for appreciation by all concerned,' said the board. Further, a daily review, starting from July 1, 2025 with 1 or 2 shortlisted divisions on a randomised basis, will be conducted by the Railway Board, preferably on a daily basis in the afternoon around 4pm. 'Announcement with respect to the station/division under review on any given day will be made on the community by 1500 hrs of that day,' said the board. In a similar step, the Railways revamped its more than two decades old clean train station (CTS) scheme last month to improve the cleaning process of trains with minimal disruption to operations. The CTS was launched by the Ministry of Railways in October 2002 to meet the demand for cleaner train coaches and toilets. It entails a mechanised en route cleaning of trains during halts at identified stations on major trunk routes. Its revamped version will be implemented at 20 designated locations for 683 trains.

DJB issues instructions to ensure uninterrupted water supply at Kanwar camps

Ahead of the Kanwar Yatra beginning July 11, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has issued instructions to ensure uninterrupted water supply at Kanwar camps across the Capital. In an order made available this week, DJB CEO Kaushal Raj Sharma has directed all officials to coordinate with district magistrates and the Irrigation and Flood Control department to make timely arrangements. 'To ensure the well-being and convenience of these pilgrims, it is imperative that adequate water supply is provided in and around the camp areas, especially considering the ongoing monsoon season,' the order stated. Superintending engineers (Maintenance) have been directed to treat the matter with the 'utmost priority' and ensure all arrangements are in place well before the yatra begins. The DJB has stressed the need for 'assured potable water supply' at all designated camps. It also directed officials to deploy sufficient number of water tankers and prepare a fixed daily schedule outlining the frequency and volume of supply. At larger and well-established camps, the DJB has suggested setting up temporary water connections or stand posts, but only after proper technical assessment confirms safety and feasibility. The order also mandated regular water quality checks. Water supplied through tankers and temporary setups must be tested frequently to ensure it meets potable standards. To streamline implementation, nine superintending engineers have been appointed as nodal coordinators to liaise with the respective district magistrates. 'In case of emergency, officers not below the rank of executive engineer shall handle water supply issues,' the order stated.

Ahead of the Muharram procession on July 6, Delhi Police has put in place special traffic arrangements across the city to ensure smooth vehicle movement and public safety, officials said. Speaking to ANI, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dinesh Kumar Gupta, said, 'As Muharram is on July 6 in Delhi, we have made detailed traffic plans. Our aim is to provide diversions where needed and ensure the public faces as little trouble as possible. We will also be present on the ground to monitor the Muharram procession closely.' Traffic plans for Kanwar Yatra too Talking about the Kanwar Yatra, a major annual Hindu religious event that brings lakhs of devotees to the roads, Gupta added that police are ready with their plan. 'We have made preparations from July 12 to July 22. We have marked the routes for the Kanwar Yatra and arranged barricades so that Kanwariyas do not move on the main roads,' he said. He added that on the last two days of the Yatra, traffic police will be fully deployed to manage diversions and keep movement smooth. Live Events Importance of both events Muharram is a major day of mourning for Shia Muslims and is observed with large processions and tazias . In India, the 7–8 crore Shia Muslim population, along with people from other communities, take part in these events with devotion and respect. The Kanwar Yatra, on the other hand, is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage where devotees carry holy river water to pour on Lord Shiva's shrines. It is believed that even Parshuram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu and a devotee of Shiva, took part in the first yatra. Devotees observe fasting, perform rituals and walk for hundreds of kilometres during this annual event. Inputs from agencies Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
