Ryanair passengers injured after jumping from plane wing during fire scare
The flight was about to depart to Manchester on Saturday night from Palma airport when the crew sounded the alarm of a fire onboard the aircraft.
A video shows passengers leaping from the aircraft wing onto the runway, with some falling on their fronts from a height onto the tarmac.
Six people were taken to hospital by ambulances that arrived on the scene.
A confused airport worker can be overheard telling a colleague over a walkie-talkie: 'Do you know the plane has emergency exits?' as the passengers were filmed fleeing the aircraft and jumping from the wing.
'Plane about to leave from apron 10 or eight, and now the people are jumping from the wing onto the ground,' he added, The Telegraph reported.
'Something's happening, something's happening, they're evacuating the plane. Now the firefighters are coming.'
The emergency was brought under control, with most passengers able to leave the plane in an orderly fashion.
One passenger onboard the flight, 56-year-old Denise Kelly, told the MailOnline that a member of the cabin crew ran along the aisle and told them to evacuate.
She said it felt like a 'life or death situation' and only jumped from the wing because she feared for her life, adding that the cabin crew told them to leave behind their belongings in case the 'plane exploded'.
Ms Kelly hit the tarmac and said she suffered a broken right heel, fractured left wrist and smashed elbow, saying she has been left 'completely traumatised' by the incident.
Ryanair later said the fire alert had been a false alarm. The airline said in a statement to The Independent: 'This flight from Palma to Manchester discontinued take-off due to a false fire warning light indication.
'Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal. While disembarking, a small number of passengers encountered very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc) and crew requested immediate medical assistance.
'To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged a replacement aircraft to operate this flight, which departed Palma at 7.05am this morning.
'We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.'
A spokesperson for Mallorca's emergency services said Saturday morning: 'We received an alert about a fire on a plane on the ground at Palma airport at 12.36am today.
'Four ambulances were sent to the scene. Eighteen people were injured and received medical assistance of whom six were taken to hospital,' they added, describing the injuries as 'minor'.

As the great escape of summer 2025 begins, airports across the UK are predicted to handle more passengers than ever in July and August. Exclusive research by The Independent reveals Fridays, Sundays and Mondays will be the most crowded days in the terminals. The peak days for the great getaway for all the top UK hubs can be revealed using sources including the airports themselves and flight data supplied exclusively by aviation data analyst Cirium. For the leading Scottish airports, the second week of July will bring the biggest crowds. Several English airports will see a surge in passenger numbers in the final 10 days of July when the schools have broken up. But the quartet of UK airports in the 30-million plus category – Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted – will see their busiest days in the second half of August. Along with peak passenger numbers, runways will be worked hard. At Gatwick, the world's busiest single-runway airport, a plane will land or take off an average of every 95 seconds around the clock on a couple of days in August – with just 65 seconds between departures and arrivals in peak hours. Choosing to fly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday is likely to lead to a calmer experience. Five of the top airports are busiest on Fridays, and three each are predicted to have their peak days on Sundays and Mondays: The main airports in Northern Ireland and Wales – Belfast International and Cardiff respectively – have already passed their peak days for summer 205. But the Welsh airport will see its busiest day for departures on 28 August, with 2,684 passengers expected to take off. On Monday 1 September, the signal that the country is back to back to work is that London City's busiest day is expected at the start of the ninth month. Friday 22 August: Manchester Around 115,000 passengers, evenly split between inbound and outbound, are expected to fly out of the nation's third-busiest airport (after Heathrow and Gatwick). The total of arriving and departing passengers may exceed the all-time peak of 269,000 recorded on 18 August 2024 – which was achieved partly due to travellers attending Taylor Swift's performances at Wembley Stadium. Sunday 31 August: Stansted Essex's leading international airport is likely to have its busiest-ever month in August. In the previous two summers, the third Friday in August has been busiest at Stansted. But Cirium reports the last day of the month will be peak departures: 284 flights outbound with more than 54,000 seats. With holidaymakers returning en masse before the start of September, expect well over 100,000 passing through.

Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has begun erupting again - at one point shooting an ash cloud 18km (11mi) into the sky - as residents flee their homes once have been no reports of casualties since Monday morning, when the volcano on the island of Flores began spewing ash and lava again.
