Filmmaker Gerard Johnstone talks ‘M3GAN 2.0' and addresses rumours of 'copying' 'Terminator' – says "comparisons started after the script"
Creator of the hit movie 'M3GAN' and its upcoming sequel 'M3GAN 2.0',
Gerard Johnstone
recently opened up about the films as well as the potential they hold in the current industry. The director talked about how his film has the 'power to stay'.
Johnstone opens up about upcoming 'M3GAN 2.0'
Johnstone made his smashing studio debut with 'M3GAN' in 2023, which managed to garner 182 million dollars at the box office, while the cost of creation was only 12 million dollars. The film was dropped at a time when AI integration in our daily lives was becoming more and more popular.
Now, questions about how trustworthy AI is or if we can truly operate on the technology, etc., are all being addressed in his upcoming project. The director, while talking about the film with The Hollywood Reporter, shared that as humans, we do have an obligation over how we use this ever-developing tech. He stated in the interview that 'If [AI] does bad things, is that really because the thing itself is bad? Or is it just because of the way we've trained it?'
While addressing the success of the franchise and the possibility of future films, the director and screenwriter commented that 'Yeah, but I would not be surprised if there are another five of these movies.
So, who knows, maybe I'll come back for the fifth one.'
Director addresses rumours of 'copying' '
Terminator
' plot
As soon as the main plot of the new film was revealed, many people online started making the comparisons between 'M3GAN 2.0' and 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day', which the director was not surprised by. Gerard shared while talking about the 'copying' rumours that 'It's really funny because the comparisons started after the script was written. I thought, 'Yeah, I guess [James] Cameron did it first — like everything else,' but I was really just focused on a redemption arc for M3GAN.
I will also say that T2 would be more similar [to M3GAN 2.0] if it was a redemption story for [Arnold Schwarzenegger's] first Terminator from The Terminator. Terminator 2 has a completely different robot.'
He continued with his answer, saying that 'I will also say that T2 would be more similar [to M3GAN 2.0] if it was a redemption story for [Arnold Schwarzenegger's] first Terminator from The Terminator. That's the key difference.
Terminator 2 has a completely different robot. He has to learn certain things, but he's been programmed to protect from the get-go. M3GAN 2.0 is about a machine that we think of as malevolent, but then we do a deeper dive.
'
About 'M3GAN 2.0'
The upcoming film follows a redemption plot for M3GAN, who in the previous film had murdered 4 people and a dog under the guise of 'protecting Cady'. In the new film, after the initial plans of creating the android bot were thought to be destroyed, a defence contractor somehow gets his hands on a copy, creating the killing machine AMELIA.
Unpredictable as ever, however, the new android bot goes rogue and kills anyone who was associated with making it.
Cady and her aunt are next on the list, and in order to save themselves, as well as mankind, they recreate M3GAN with certain upgrades in order to defeat the new AI evil.
The director also delved into certain details of the film that can be observed in the trailer, especially the part where one of M3GAN's upgrades is making her taller. The director shared during the interview that the change was made in order to accommodate the actual actress's height change as well. He stated that 'Amie is such an integral part of the creation and execution of M3GAN, and it just felt right [to accommodate her new height].
The other side of it was that Violet is also growing, and if M3GAN is somewhere between a best friend and a parent to Cady, it doesn't make sense for her to be shorter than Cady.'

The Waterfront Season 2 in the works? Everything we know about Netflix's southern crime drama
The Waterfront may have only just premiered, but after rocketing to the top of Netflix's global Top 10, fans are already desperate for more. Released on June 19, the eight-episode crime drama created by Kevin Williamson follows the Buckley family, a struggling fishing dynasty in North Carolina, who get caught up in a violent drug smuggling war, according to a People report. In a bold season finale, the Buckleys took down dangerous smuggler Grady (Topher Grace), ending in a high-stakes yacht standoff and a dramatic kill-shot by Cane (Jake Weary). Although Netflix has not yet confirmed a second season, Williamson earlier told The Hollywood Reporter that he originally pitched the series as a three-season arc, with potential to go even further. Williamson told THR that three seasons would be a solid number, but he could go up to five seasons if the show were successful. As per the People report, with Grady's death being confirmed, Williamson hinted that Season 2 will be introducing a new primary antagonist: likely from the Parker family, who allied with the Buckleys in Season 1 but have more secrets to unravel. Williamson reportedly explained that the Parker family will become Waterfront Season 2's big conflict. He said there will be additional Parker family members, who will likely be equally as complicated as the Buckleys, adding that they could even be more dangerous than Grady. Even though no cast has been officially confirmed, Williamson expressed excitement about bringing back Jake Weary (Cane) and Rafael L Silva (Shawn), Harlan's secret son. Williamson further stated that getting to work with Rafael more would be incredible. He added that there's a bond which can't be broken. Given that most of the Buckleys survived the finale, including Melissa Benoist's Bree, who was shot and rescued, their stories could continue to unfold, the People report added. Grady, who had kidnapped Bree and her kid, Diller, was ambushed by Harlan and Cane. Cane ended up shooting Grady in the face during the showdown, then tossed him into the water. At the end of the season, the Buckleys were back together at Bree's hospital bed, so fingers crossed things will get better, even if there is still trouble ahead. You can stream all eight episodes of The Waterfront Season 1 on Netflix. Will there be a Season 2 of The Waterfront? Netflix has not confirmed a renewal yet, but creator Kevin Williamson has pitched a three-season arc and is hopeful. Is Grady dead? Yes. Kevin Williamson confirmed that Grady was 'definitely dead' after the Season 1 finale. What will Season 2 focus on? Season 2 could follow the Parker family as the new threat, with more Buckley family drama and a fresh villain at the center. Where can I watch The Waterfront? The full first season is available to stream on Netflix now.

M3GAN 2.0 Trailer Is A 'Gateway Horror' For Kids And Families
M3GAN 2.0 director Gerard Johnstone shared some thoughts about whether this sequel is suitable for a family audience, especially kids. M3GAN surprised everyone in 2023 with its fresh story and exciting action scenes. Now, two years later, M3GAN 2.0 is here with the same bold robot character in a sequel that mixes horror with intense action. In the first film, the killer robot used various weapons to take down her targets. Fans are curious if the new movie focuses more on fight scenes or scary moments. Director Gerard Johnstone has shared some thoughts about whether this sequel is suitable for a family audience, especially kids. Believing that the film can be enjoyed with the whole family, speaking with People, Johnstone said, 'Some of my favourite horror movies, Insidious, Drag Me to Hell, are PG-13, so you can do it. It's like a gateway horror movie for parents to take their kids to. I'm a parent myself, and it sucks when you have to split the family up and figure out getting a babysitter and stuff like that just so you can go out to the movies. It's awesome when a movie can actually reach a wider audience." Johnstone said that to make it PG-13, 'there were a few things that we had to tone down for this. Some things were really hard to let go of and other things it was like, 'Oh, that actually works better when we make that cut.' So it's like a two-edged sword in a way." Director Gerard Johnstone believes that M3GAN 2.0 is suitable for children. But according to The New York Times review, the PG-13 rated film includes quite a bit of cartoon-like yet intense violence, along with some strong language. As per the official synopsis, 'Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN's creator Gemma has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma's niece Cady, now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma's overprotective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defence contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy." As Amelia starts to think more for herself, she no longer wants to follow human commands. She even begins to question if humans should exist at all. This puts everyone in danger. To stop her, Gemma decides that the only solution is to bring back M3GAN and improve her skills. As both advanced AI robots come face to face, the original robot now has a real challenge ahead. M3GAN 2.0 features Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Ivanna Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp and Jemaine Clement. First Published:

According to a report by Musk had planned a public auction for the property in December 2024. Yet, January 2025 records indicate the home was ultimately purchased for $7.5 million through an LLC owned by Musk, the report notes. Why Gene Wilder's nephew felt short on his loan payments While living in the home, the couple worked to 'restore the house to much of how Gene had it (with modern editions and no shag carpeting) during his golden period there,' Walker-Pearlman told The Hollywood Reporter. However, the foreclosure sale details and ownership transition were kept private. Walker-Pearlman said, 'Everything was orderly and convivial.' He was reportedly financially affected by the 2023 Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes, which led to delays in loan payments. He previously mentioned to the outlet that there was no ill will between him and Musk regarding the foreclosure notice. In a statement from 2024, Walker-Pearlman said: 'It was an opportunity that allowed me to film my autobiographical movie, The Requiem Boogie, in the house where so many childhood memories in it actually took place.
